🫶🏽🇺🇦Our Totnes Branch is now taking donations for:

- Children’s winter clothes 🧦🧣🧤
- Dog and Cat food 🦮🐈

To give to Charity workers Andy and Max for their November trip to Ukraine 🇺🇦🫶🏽

On Friday after a huge stock room clear out we found a lot of veterinary equipment that we no longer use or need. Our nurse Sophie found a group locally who are collecting medical supplies to take back to Ukraine to help a local animal hospital recover. Andy on the left lives in Plymouth and Max who’s from Ukraine and living in Plymouth helping collect donations to drive back to Ukraine mid November. They have done 7 trips in 18 months helping various communities 🥰

If you think you may know this boy please get in touch.

This is the best picture I could get of our Tawny Owl release 😊 (will add a video in the comments).
Thank you Chris and Lottie at Dart Vale vets for your help in getting him rehabbed.
He has spent 4 weeks with us, he came in with a wing injury and stunned from flying into a window. Three weeks ago he was still showing slight neurological issues but has made a brilliant recovery and it was so nice to be able to release him back to his beautiful home at the Sharpham Trust

Patient of the month ✨

Meet Molly! This lovely older lady is one of our Dartmouth patients. She can often be spotted paddle boarding on the river in her pink life jacket or running alongside Kevin's bike! Poem by owner in tribute to this sweet soul.....

My name is molly dog
I live with the Pyne family
Well actually I live with Kev
As the kids have grown up
And gone out into the world
To wherever that might be?

When I was young I walked
The entire Southwest
Coast path
It took two full years
And it was a terrific laugh

Kev thinks he’s funny and cool
But he’s actually a bit of an idiot
And a super soft kind old fool

But he feeds me and he loves me
And he takes me out three times a day
Even when it’s raining
I don’t wanna go by the way

I am only his fourth dog
First was Gyspie
The Second was Celidh
The third was Wizz
And Kevin never had a dog
Until he took up with and married
The beautiful now deceased Lyz

The house is a bit scruffy
But in the summer it’s cool
And in the winter is warm
I’ve been part of a very happy family
Since nine weeks after I was born

I paddleboard I canoe
And in my time I have sailed
And I have been loved every day of my life
Something which the Pyne family
Would Consider it a matter of honour
never ever to have failed

I live on Kibble chicken and Pees
Toped off with
With cream of chicken soup
And a couple of sprats
It looks pretty posh
And with all my tip because it’s small wonder
But I’m bordering on being fat

Our family have a motto
It’s we don’t lie to each other
And we do what we say we will do
And we don’t take you on
Unless we can see it through…

🩷NIC'S ULTRACHALLENGE FOR MOTOR NEURONE DISEASE 🩷

Only 3 weeks to go until my ultra challenge, 33 mile walk. Training going well, managed 70 miles last week and no blisters!! Still time to donate if you would like to , any amount however small would be much appreciated; would be great if I could reach my target of £1000.
Many thanks Nic!

As many of you will already be aware, our Dart Vale branches along with many other veterinary practices nationwide have been struggling with the the after math of cyber attacks that greatly impacted our computer systems and phone lines. We greatly appreciate your understanding over these past few weeks.

Tomorrow our computer systems in all branches will be transferring to a completely new system which we hope will be beneficial in the smooth running of our practices and client satisfaction. Despite staff training, this will be totally new for all of us so we ask for your continued support as we navigate this new system.

As always, being able to provide the best Animal Care remains the driving force for any changes implemented.

Thank you in advance for for bearing with us!

🐱 Cat microchipping will become law in England from Monday 10 June 2024 🐱

This will be a legal requirement in England for all pet cats over the age of 20 weeks old.

❤️‍🩹Due to the large numbers of stray cats in the UK, and the tendency for owned cats to roam, compulsory microchipping will make it much easier to determine which cats are owned and reunite them with their families.

If you live in England and your cat is not microchipped or if you're unsure if they are, you will need to get them checked and microchipped by 10 June 2024 or you could face a fine of up to £500!

It is strongly recommended to keep your cat indoors until they are neutered (usually at 4-5 months old). This reduces the risk of unwanted litters and likelihood of car accidents and getting lost, as unneutered cats are more likely to roam. All cats in England need to be microchipped by the time they are 20 weeks of age, this could be done during their neutering procedure so it can be placed easily and they do not feel it.

🙋‍♀️Placing a microchip is straightforward but should only ever be performed by a veterinary surgeon or other trained professional (such as a veterinary nurse). A special needle is used; this is larger than the ones used for a standard vaccine but makes placement quick, and most pets are unbothered by it.

If you live in England and your cat is not microchipped or if you're unsure if they are, you will need to get them microchipped by 10 June 2024 or you could face a fine of up to £500. We are offering appointments for cat owners whose cats have not yet been microchipped. £17.99 or Free for Healthy Pet club members! Please give us a call on 01803 862142 to book an appointment.

You may never have seen behind the consultation room in a veterinary practice...❤️

Take a look at the work our vets and nurses do on the front line every day to look after animals in veterinary practices, hospitals, in the field and on call - always so that they receive the best possible care.

Thankyou Molly Case for the poem you have written about our profession.

🐾 🐱 Do you have a cat aged 7 years or older? 🐱🐾
❔❔ Could they be hypertensive? ❔❔

🐈 Hypertension (increased blood pressure) is a very common clinical problem in cats, most frequently diagnosed in older cats 7-10 years of age, but is still often overlooked.

💊 The majority of cats with an underlying disease/condition such as renal disease, hyperaldosteronism, hyperthyroidism, diabetes; are at a significantly higher risk of being diagnosed with hypertension as well.

⚠ However! ⚠ Hypertension has also been diagnosed in more than 5% of apparently healthy older cats, with no problems.

💊 Left untreated, hypertension can cause serious complications such as; blindness, damage to the kidneys and damage to the heart and central nervous system (leading to seizures and other neurological issues).

🐈 Ideal recommendations for cats;
- Aged 7 - 10 years should have their blood pressure checked annually;
- Aged 11+ years, every 6 months;
- With a pre-existing condition or known hypertension (hyperthyroidism, diabetics and kidney issues) every 3 – 6 months.

📝 This simple check which can be carried out within a booked consult slot, with a vet or a nurse, can prevent these serious complications arising! It does not hurt them and is performed in a similar way to us having our blood pressure taken.
🌠🌠 We are also a GOLD accredited cat friendly practice! 🌠🌠

🐱 We want our feline friends to stay as healthy as possible for as long as possible, so if you have a cat aged 7 or over, or has any of the health conditions listed, consider booking them in for a blood pressure check at any of our branches.

☎ If you want to discuss the process, cost or booking in for this, please call your surgery of choice and our team will be happy to help you!

🐱 More information can also be found on the ISFM website https://icatcare.org/advice/hypertension-high-blood-pressure/

🐱 Save this post for ✨TOP TIPS ✨on Applying eye drops or ointment to your cat:

🤝• Hold your cat firmly but gently - having a second person to help will make it easier, or you can try wrapping the cat in a towel or blanket if they are wriggly.
🤌 • Hold your cat’s head in your hands, tilting the head so the nose is pointing upwards
👀• Open the eyelids gently on one side with a thumb and finger
💧• Place a few drops or a line of ointment on the surface of the eye (as directed by your vet)
👁• Close the eyelids and massage gently to spread the medication over the whole of the eye.

🔺Caution- Images of Surgery

Meet Naughty ✨Polly ✨

This doe eyed girl bit off more than she could chew when she got hold of her mums fancy antipasti board this week!
Luckily Polly belongs to one of our wonderful vets and she was rushed straight in for endoscopy, which revealed 4 cocktail sticks in her stomach. After surgery and a sleepover all of these were removed and Polly is making a very speedy recovery ❤️‍🩹
