We carry out genetic testing of the mum and make sure that when we choose a mate, the pups should not be affected by any of the known genetic problems with Cockers. In my view one of the biggest benefits of pedigree dogs is that the issues affecting a specific breed are known about and genetic testing can reduce the chance of many health problems. Of course, science advances every day, and it may
be that new genetic tests become available at a later date that we may not currently be able to test for. We also use other tests - eyes, hips and elbows for example to minimise the chances of any issues in the pups. With both genetic and other tests these can only give an indication, and are not a guarantee, but are certainly helpful. We also choose dogs that have a low ‘breeding coefficient. In the past some breeders have wanted to enhance a certain characteristic of a dog, and interbred – this can cause real health issues. The breeding coefficient of our dogs is low, and we have intentionally selected imported sires in the breeding line to ensure as diverse a ‘line’ as possible. When it comes to the care of the puppies, they get the best care they can get from ourselves and where needed, a vet. The puppies are then brought up in a family home. They live in the house around other dogs, with children making noise and playing with them, hoovering going on around them and as much socialising as we can do. They go out in the car, they sometimes visit a local school, and once we can have friends in the garden, they will meet a range of people. When you visit you will see their mum and grandmother in the place they were born. There is no chance that our puppies were puppy farmed, illegally imported or any of the other horror stories you may hear. Once you have the puppy home, we give you a 'window' to have your own vet check the puppy. We are always at the end of a phone if you need any help or advice, and if you’d like, we add you to a WhatsApp group with the other litter siblings, so you can share about the pups. On the pups first birthday we always arrange a puppy party for them all to meet up again. It’s always fun to see them all – let’s hope COVID is all over by then…
Olym Cockers is not a business, Olym is our KC name, and we are Graham & Tracy Gowland.
