New Dog Daycare Centre opening in Lount (near Ashby-De-La-Zouch)!

I am so excited to see this. The wonderful Kirsti of Hounds Dog Daycare will be opening the doors to her brand new woodland dog daycare facility in Lount in June 2024!

We have been speaking for a while now and Kirsti is passionate about running a centre that understands and supports dog’s behavioural and emotional needs.

Having done their research, one of the number one problems she discovered when speaking to current dog daycare users was lack of understanding and management of dog behaviour in groups.

I am really looking forward to seeing this place grow and fully support Kirsti’s aims and ethics for the centre ❤️🐶.

Has your dog suddenly become a bit of a Percy pain in the bum?

It could be because Spring is in the air! Fascinating stuff 👇🐶🤓

SPRINGTIME & DOGS: AN EVOLUTIONARY BIOLOGY PERSPECTIVE

Spring is often a long awaited event for many of us after a wet and cold winter. A mere glimpse of daffodil bulbs, and the promise of longer and warmer days can see us cleaning our homes and doing chores we had been putting off for months. For dogs however, a change in seasons can signal multifaceted physiological and behaviour patterns that have been determined from evolutionary biology.

Animal neuro-endocrine systems undergo seasonal shifts. In winter, melatonin activity for example (which is directly related to duration of sunlight exposure) decreases firing of the retinal nerves which trigger hormones for breeding in some species Seasonal breeding is commonly seen due to this, with some groups being assigned as 'short-day breeders’ (eg: sheep , deer and fox ) and long-day breeders ( eg: wolves, horses)
This is also referred to as a 'photoperiod' (an organism’s daily exposure to light) The ancestral control pathway of photoperiodism is thought to have originated before the divergence of mammalian and avian vertebrate lineages in the evolutionary timeline.

However, dogs and other species such as cattle and pigs, are polyestrous, which means they can cycle all year round. Fascinatingly, some exceptions are seen in Basenji and sled dogs who breed photoperiodically.
Dogs are shown to not require a photoperiod to regulate the reproductive cycle ,but their shedding cycles and immune systems are affected by photoperiodic mechanisms.

Most certainly breeding and feeding patterns of other species of both plants and animals affect our dogs’ behaviour seasonally.

Spring brings new and exciting smells from plant and animal activity. Dogs senses typically heighten during this time, and this can mean they get easily immersed or distracted, often manifesting in hunting, amplified olfactory or foraging behaviours depending on the breed and location of the dog. In multi-dog homes this can become challenging if one dog is more prey or scent driven than others, or if all are.

While these fall within perimeters of normal behaviour, dog professionals might get increased enquiries during this time about dogs not recalling , hunting excessively, grass and plant ingesting , not coming inside from the garden, or suddenly becoming fixated by some prey animals. Puppies exposed to the wider world for the first time after their vaccinations can experience sensory overload as well as adolescent dogs who's pre-frontal cortexes are still under development.

Another seasonal affect potentially in pet dogs, who mostly follow human like diurnal sleep patterns, might see an increase in crepuscular activity, like waking at 5.30am or becoming restless around dusk.

Diurnal sleep patterns in pet dogs are hypothesized to be an adaptation to living alongside humans, because variations of nocturnal and crepuscular patterns are observed in most other canids whereas diurnal activity is rarely seen. There are some data to suggest that dogs can benefit from a dark room to achieve sleep efficiency. This might be relevant in the modern environment where open plan light filled rooms are commonly seen.

Spring can therefore quickly become a frustrating time for both dogs and their humans, but recognising the effects of evolutionary biology and making some adjustments can help.

Depending on what is reinforcing for the dog, some ideas for springtime could include providing targeted exploratory enrichment, long line walks to avoid predation or avoiding prey species photoperiodic activity , safe opportunities to dig, scent work or simply some good naps on the sofa together.

Meet Rae!

Rae is a delightful 3 year old Labrador who’s mum has approached me for help with her barking around people.

After doing a full assessment, it appears Rae’s barking is likely motivated by underlying anxiety around people she doesn’t know. This can sometimes make her feel conflicted as once she knows people, Rae loves some fuss and cuddles!

I have unpicked this with Rae’s mum to help her read and understand her behaviour, which can seem confusing and unpredictable.

We are now working on a treatment plan to help with the following:

✅ Helping Rae’s mum learn how to read and respond to her body language, including possible signs of physical discomfort.

✅ Setting up Rae’s world so she feels safe and is in the right mindset for learning.

✅ Teaching Rae how to relax (for real - not just lie down!)

✅ Goving Rae a job to do (going to her bed) when guests come over and she doesn’t know what to do with herself.

Really looking forward to seeing what we can achieve over the next few months ❤️🐶.

‘Stubborn’ dog? Chances are, they’re not ‘just being stubborn’. I always recommend vet checks for seemly stubborn / odd / sudden out of character behaviour!

Here’s why 👇👇👇

‘My dog is naughty/bad/untrainable/dominant/stupid’

I hear this most weeks on intake forms. Usually I get pretty excited to see these cos I know I’m gonna get to change a dog and owners life!

So often we write our dogs off as any adjective that fits the above and honestly, I’m yet to meet a dog who fits any of those adjectives (and I have worked with 10k plus dogs over the ten years I’ve been doing this!). I do however week in week out meet dogs with health issues that contribute to their slow progress in terms of training. Did you know dogs don’t show pain or discomfort how we do? We often think ‘oh he isn’t limping or yelping so he is fine’.

Please read the examples below ⬇️

🐾 A huntaway cross who I work with who bit his owner. Reluctant to have his feet cleaned, got spicy over any intense handling, had periods of seeming insanity and relentless barking and being unable to calm down. Huntaways are vocal dogs… but…

Turns out he had hip dysplasia. This dog didn’t limp. He wasn’t lame in any way. He chased his ball and sprinted and jumped and had no issues physically on the surface however under that behaviour was pain.

🐾 A French bulldog. Resource guarding to the extreme. Bit his owners while resource guarding the knot pattern in their wooden floor. Also bombed around without a worry in the world and had no outward signs of pain.

Turns out he had a severe spinal condition causing intermittent excruciating pain.

🐾 A young spaniel owned by a very good friend who was having confidence issues. She would ‘tap out’ of training on the regular and my friend went from ‘this is my ticket dog who will represent my country’ to ‘is this even possible?’

Dog had hormonal issues and likely spikes of hormones left right and centre. A carefully timed spay and she is now grade 6 in agility.

🐾 A friends Border Collie. Owned by a very experienced and talented agility handler and trainer. Regularly ‘checked out’ of training sessions, seemed to not be able to learn things that were moderately straightforward. Described by other trainers as ‘oh she is just a border collie it’s what they are like’.

Turns out she is mostly deaf.

🐾 A black Labrador. Always social and friendly and attended brilliant puppy classes and adolescent classes. Had the best start training wise you can imagine. He started showing some intermittent aggression to his owners in the home and aggression to other dogs out and about.

Turns out he had bilateral elbow dysplasia.

🐾 Young German Shepherd. Always energetic and silly in her behaviour but suddenly got worse. Excessive zoomies, inability to settle, increased reactivity to other dogs, reluctant to get in the car, obsessive destruction at home.

Turns out she had an infection in her va**na that was causing discomfort and exacerbating all those teenage behaviours to the point of being unmanageable.

🐾 My own dog! My NSDTR started missing his dog walk contact early last year. I was tearing my hair out trying to fix it.

Turns out he had a minor iliopsoas strain and some physio fixed the issue for us.

———————————

All these dogs have one thing in common. They are not stupid or untrainable or naughty or dominant. They are uncomfortable and that is triggering extreme behaviour fallout.

None of the above issues would be resolveable with training. All of the issues will be resolveable with training ONLY when the pain is resolved. Some of them will have drastic improvement from the moment the pain or discomfort is managed!

If your behaviourist or trainer doesn’t immediately advise a veterinary visit if any aggression, excessive ‘naughtiness’ or strange behaviour is present, walk away immediately. Even if you think your dog is fine, visit the vets. Ask for a thorough examination and push for a proper evaluation of your dog from nose to tail and potentially blood tests too. If you’re still not sure, get a second opinion.

You cannot train the pain or discomfort out of your dog. Address THIS first and foremost.

A fun game I like to play with my Staffy Rogue!

She had spotted some biscuits up on the side that she very much wanted my help to get down for her! I have previously taught Rogue if she wants something, instead of whining and barking, to lie down quietly and rest her chin on the floor.

Rogue now likes to take full advantage of this at every available opportunity and who can resist that face 😍🐶.

Sadly I’ve welcomed in the New Year with Covid 🤦‍♀️. Officially my Christmas Holiday ends on Wednesday so hoping I’m back on my feet by Thursday!

Really excited to meet my new clients ready to start in the New Year and hopefully make life a little less stressful for the dogs and their people now that my behaviour services are fully operational! 🥳🐶

07/11/2023

Whilst I have been busy getting ready to relaunch my training services with new behavioural support I have been closely following the XL Bully ban.

As the owner of a Bully Breed, I really feel for those whom the ban may affect and who own healthy dogs who currently safely enjoy the freedom of being off lead in public.

I have also been asked by a number of people for my thoughts and advice on the matter.

For anyone who is currently worried about their dogs, I would advise following Trevor Cooper at Cooper & Co: Doglaw 👇.

Cooper & Co are closely following all of the latest events in relation to the ban and clearly explain what this could mean for owners and their dogs, with advice on what steps to take now ahead of time to ensure you are able to keep your dog once the law comes into effect.

I am currently putting together some working procedures in preparation for the launch of my training and behaviour services - one of which is obtaining vet referral.

Companion Minds summarise beautifully in their post below why vet referral and involvement is SO important before jumping into a training plan.

ALL dogs who come to me for training and behaviour support will receive a full assessment BEFORE starting on their training journey 🤗.

Welcome! Want To Know More?

Hi there from the owner of Kasaya Canine Services! – established 2016.

I am a professional dog walker and trainer who grew up on the Derbyshire-Staffordshire border in Derby and have now settled in Burton (living with my gorgeous Staffordshire Bull Terrier and Rhodesian Ridgeback).

I have always been a dog lover but the greatest pleasure I have found in my work is building relationships with their owners! There is no greater honour than to be trusted with the care of someone’s best friend and family member.

As well as being a professional Dog Walker, I am also a fully accredited PACT – KSA (Professional Association of Canine trainers – Knowledge and Skills Assessed) Canine Instructor. I take my role very seriously as a professional whom owners put their trust in to care for their dogs who are often seen as family members.
