When vet nurse and co-founder of Awesome Paws Agility, Trish Helme, noticed worrying changes in her five year old Working Cocker Epic, she immediately booked an appointment with canine massage therapist Sarah Darling for an initial assessment. She wondered if the process known as Photobiomodulation could help Epic get back to the active sporting life she loved. Sarah Darling of K9 Gait Massage explains what happened next...

The month of May is dedicated to spreading awareness about canine arthritis.

It’s not always easy to see when our dog maybe in discomfort.

And it isn’t always an identifiable limp to bring our attention to an area or areas of soreness.

So taking a close look at subtle changes could give you an opportunity to highlight an adaptive movement, or discomfort and seek the support your dog needs to help get their tail wagging again.

🤔 Did you guess which leg it was?

Toby has osteoarthritis in his right hock!

He is over extending his right hind to reduce the amount of time his foot is on the ground.

🧐 Did you notice the changes in his movement?

Due to his long term lameness, Toby developed a vast array of compensatory tensions and restrictions through his neck, shoulders, back and limbs that were exacerbating his condition.

Im happy to say, that following targeted soft tissue therapies, exercise and lifestyle management, Toby was wagging his tail again and moving much more freely.

If you've noticed any changes in your pup's movement or you just want to ensure they're in tip-top shape, don't hesitate to reach out. I'll conduct a thorough muscular health check and gait analysis to assess their stride, posture, and overall movement mechanics.

With years of experience and a passion for helping our four-legged friends feel their best, you can trust that your pup will be in good hands. Let's work together to keep your dog happy, healthy, and moving with ease.

URGENT - ALABAMA ROT❗️| A suspected case of Alabama Rot has been reported in our neck of the woods, in the south of the county near Ross-on-Wye.

🔹Please SHARE to make people aware!

Alabama Rot is a disease that damages blood vessels in the skin and kidney and can be fatal.

If you walk your dog in muddy, wooded areas of the county please look out for:

*Lesions or ulcers on the skin. These could appear as a patch of red skin, or as an open ulcer or sore most commonly found on a dog’s paws or lower legs, but they can also be found on a dog’s face, mouth or tongue, or on their lower body
*Signs of kidney failure include loss of appetite, tiredness and vomiting.

If your dog is unwell or exhibiting the above symptoms please contact your vet as soon as possible as early treatment can save an otherwise fit and healthy animal.

A post shared by Raw Dogg said:

“Warning Please Read! Alabama Rot. 🚨

“We have been aware of issues of this nature from other customers but please read this from one of our regulars.

“Just to let people know that my dog has been ill with suspected Alabama Rot. The reason I say suspected is because you cannot be 100% sure unless the kidneys are biopsied post mortem.

“Luckily my boy pulled through - one of only 10% that do!

“We always walk in the Lea Bailey Enclosure. Please make sure you wash your dogs off after having been walked.”

Elfie
Chihuahua
Approximately 10 months

Teen tiny little Elfie was never claimed after being found as a stray in Herefordshire, sadly he had no microchip or collar with an identity tag so couldn’t be reunited with a genuine owner.
Elfie has had a thorough health check at the vets, he has started his vaccinations and had his very important microchip, he was super brave and was very well behaved too!

Elfie is a lovely little boy, incredibly friendly with people but can get over-excitable around other dogs, he likes them a little too much!
A home with another dog is a possibility but they would need be very friendly and tolerant of Elfies advances. Elfie hasn’t yet been assessed around cats.
Any children must be 8 years +, he wouldn’t enjoy being carried around by very small people, he can also jump and scratch, as most puppies do!

If you have a good sense of humour and would like to find out more about this little pocket rocket please give us a call directly on 01568 760033 💙

What a stunning boy. Looking for a forever home 🐾♥️🐾♥️🙏

UPDATE 08/12/23

We have received an incredible amount of enquiries for lovely Mikey. We stopped taking enquiries a couple of days ago as we have so many wonderful home offers. We will be back in touch with all who had already enquired asap. 💙
———————————————————————————-

Hey everyone, my name is Mikey and I’m a very handsome 11 year old yellow lab, although you would never believe my age as I certainly do not behave like it.
My lovely foster family describe me as ‘an absolute gent of a lab & I’m literally the sweetest boy you could ever meet.’
I love my walks and really enjoy exploring the fields & the woods but I also love cuddling up with my people at home.
I am clean in the house and do not mind being left on my own to cuddle up and wait for you to return home to me.
I love all dogs and people, I just love to be loved.

I have only had one home before coming into rescue so I am very used to being a cherished pet, also have an adorable way of walking around with a toy in my mouth to show anyone who wants to see it.

My foster home just adore me and say I could live with a kind dog or without as I really wouldn’t mind either. They say I am a gem, I’m not sure what that means but they all look pretty pleased with me.

All my love,

Mikey x

If you have a Mikey shaped hole in your family and would like to express your interest in him, please give us a call directly on 01568 760033.

We have been notified that a poisonous plant is being used as decoration in a pot plant that can be purchased in garden centres and possibly florists.

The pot plant is Livistona rotundifolia (footstool palm; also known as Saribus rotundifolius) and pots of these plants are decorated with three fibrous balls. The balls are the skeletonised fruit of Cerbera odollam (su***de tree, pong-pong). Within each fruit is a kernel that is extremely toxic; a single kernel can be fatal if eaten and poses a risk to both pets and people. The toxic compounds in Cerbera odollam are cardiac glycosides, which are also found in foxglove, oleander, lily of the valley and other plants.

If you have these fibrous fruits in your pot plant, remove them and dispose of them safely. It you are worried your pet may have eaten the plant material contact Animal PoisonLine (01202 509 000)or your vet immediately.

📚 🐕 I can’t tell you how excited I am for this incredible 2 day event all about Fascia 🙏

I work with over 100 dogs a month, with a large majority experiencing either restrictive movement, pain and / or discomfort in their body through fascia dysfunction.

These issues can not only effect how they feel physically, but also how they feel, think and function mentally.

These can develop through past and present issues, such as injury, surgery, trauma, stress, anxiety, neurological and orthopaedic conditions such as osteoarthritis, dysplasia’s and day to day exercise and lifestyle routines.

When I think I know a lot BAM! More information is revealed that just makes my brain explode!

Honestly, it can literally bring me to tears witnessing the results following skilfully working with a dogs soft tissue structures.

After nearly 30 yrs experience rehabilitating soft tissue issues, 6 of which being solely for our doggies, every day I still continue to learn something new.

Thankyou Onlinepethealth for providing this incredible learning platform and helping animal professionals continue to provide the best care for our furry family members.

🐾♥️

As we start to consider the fascia, we naturally view this tissue as the ‘glue’ that holds the body together or the physical substance connecting and creating structure in the body.

But the more we study and understand the fascia, the more it challenges our preconceptions. Fascia is not simply an inert structure connecting the muscles, tendons, ligaments and bones of the body – it plays a role in pain perception and creation.

‘When you deal with the fascia, you are doing business with the branch offices of the brain.’ (Andrew Taylor Still, the father of osteopathy).

Fascia has six to ten times the number of nerve endings or innervation than muscle tissue. It is our largest sensory and feedback organ involved in proprioception and nociception.

But it is certainly not simple – different kinds of fascia are innervated differently, depending on their density, structure and function.

Some nerve endings that have been identified in the fascia are:

Ruffinian bodies in the aponeurosis
Pacinian bodies, in the visceral fascia, especially
Golgi tendon organs in tendons and ligaments
Interstitial nerves (nociceptors)
Free nerve endings (nociceptors)
C-fibres (nociceptors)

The large number of pain receptors available in the fascia may have a role to play in developing chronic pain syndromes. Painful conditions may also be localized in many cases to the fascia rather than to the muscle tissues, as has been previously assumed.

Fascial pain

Pain in the fascial network is generally considered to have a delayed onset, to be spread over a large area, and to include more than one body segment. It may also occur in a different area or body segment to the original or primary injury.

Over time, fascial pain will spread locally and to more distant body areas within the same fascial chain.

What a fab day with the wonderful Ruth & Liv on the photizouk stand at the amazing Edition dog live event yesterday. We were completely rushed off our feet from start to finish! 🤪

A whole day talking to wonderful doggie parents about the benefits of Photizo, providing free muscular health checks & giving lots wellbeing tips to help our dogs live their best lives ♥️🐾

Every dog I saw completely melted my heart 😍

I was hoping to visit all the stands and watch the shows, but I was seriously on the floor most of the day!!! 😱 not that I minded at all! 🐾❤️

I got to catch up with the wonderful Anna Webb who seriously lights up a room with her incredible energy and charisma 🤩Anna brought her adorable Mr Binks to see me. Such a cutie pie.

It was great seeing the wonderful Joe Knutkins Dog training for Essex & Suffolk who did an incredible display, and I finally got to spend time with the fabulous Dr Ally Grant from Dynamic dogs.

How lovely to see some of last years visitors again, who brought their doggies back for another check-up 😍

Roll on next year! 🤩

Thankyou to the wonderful Edition dog team for organising such an incredible event again this year. I felt so proud to be a part of it again♥️

Have a great week everyone 🐾🥰x

So many dogs, so little time!

What a fabulous day Ludlow Rotary Dog Day at Stokesy court last weekend. What an incredible event! ⭐️ 🐾

There weren’t enough hours in the day! So many doggies!
I was on my knees for nearly 6 hrs!!

I know it was a week ago! 🤦🏻‍♀️. Where does the time go 😱

Honestly, I’m out helping our gorgeous fur babies from 8.30am till 8pm most days, it’s like I blink and it’s Sunday again!

I just love going to shows
I get to meet so many gorgeous doggies and their Pawrents.

Most of my day was spent providing muscular health checks, talking about Canine Arthritis Management and educating on lifestyle recommendations to benefit long term muscle, joint and mental health for our dogs.

So many muscular checks highlighted areas of discomfort, totally hidden and unknown to their parents.
With our dogs having four legs, they are so good at shifting their weight to offload!
This is why it’s so good to have then checked over occasionally to help identify potential issues and to help maintain good muscle and joint health 👌

Common repetitive stresses such as slipping on laminate or tiled floors and lots of ball chucking were mentioned, which may have played heavily in to contributing factors 🧐

Having an I’ll fitting harness or ones that restrict range of movement can also impact on our dogs wellbeing, so wonderful having the amazing Leominster Pet Centre there, as I was able to navigate some doggies to them for a perfect fit harness 🙏

It was Just an incredible day. There is just something so amazing being surrounded by fur and four legs 🐾♥️🐾♥️

Thankyou to all the wonderful parents that brought their wonderful dogs to see me 🐾♥️

Helping bring back harmony to a dogs Mind, Body & Spirit

I am Sarah Darling, founder of K9 Gait Massage Therapy. I provide hands-on soft tissue therapies, strengthening & rehabilitation for dogs in the comfort of their own homes, in areas of Herefordshire, Shropshire & Powys.

I transferred 23 years’ experience in sports & remedial massage therapy for humans, to dedicating my life & passion in easing the pains, tensions, restrictions and stresses that can develop through activity, injury, surgery, physical & emotional trauma, condition or disease in our canine companions.

Just as humans, our pets can suffer pains & discomfort through their body’s, whether young, active, senior or infirm. Where we can seek the help we need through speech, sadly our pets can suffer in silence, unless they show an obvious dysfunction.

Our dogs have the ability to hide their pain well, however, they do inform us of their discomfort, but not in a language we typically understand, hence why they can go unnoticed and undiagnosed.
