Last weekend Rob was back teaching in a more practical setting. It was good to be passing on essential practical dentistry skills to members of the profession keen to take this important area of veterinary care seriously.

The size of equine teeth is often a surprise to owners. The teeth erupt and wear down over the horse’s lifetime which means in young horses the teeth can be very large.
Matteo had diagnosed a fractured 210 cheek tooth with apical infection in Pandora, a 4 year old pony. This week, Rob undertook extraction of the tooth. As the photo shows the tooth was so long the apex was close to the eye.

Why not come along to our client evening on Monday 27th February 7pm at Saddlesdane Equestrian Centre to find out more about our specialist equine dental care services?

Places are filling fast so email [email protected] to book your place, and be in with a chance to win a LeMieux Saddle Pad!

**The importance of good routine dental treatment**

Last week Matteo visited this 5 years old mare for a routine dental check-up. Despite not showing any clinical signs or giving any indications of oral discomfort, our patient presented some nasty deep cheek ulcerations caused by very sharp enamel points.
The sharp enamel points were rasped adequately on the same day reassuring that the cheek ulcerations will heal quickly and for the mare to start feeling much better!
Although cheek ulcerations shouldn’t be normal findings on a routine oral examination, sharp enamel points are commonly seen in horses mouths and can often cause discomfort during ridden exercise. The pressure of the tack and the contact of the cheek with sharp points can predispose to the development of this painful condition and make the riding experience unpleasant for both you and your horse.
Here at Equine Dentistry Referrals, adequate routine dental examination and treatment are considered essential and the key to guarantee the welfare of your horse as well as prevent the progression of dental pathologies.
Please ensure that your horse receives his routine dental check up by a qualified dental practitioner and feel free contact Sammy if you would like us to examine your horse: 07930 989 840

Last night we had our Christmas meal, jointly with Barr Equine Veterinary Ltd. Rob and Liz have worked together for over 13years, so it was great that two like minded independent equine practice teams could get together to enjoy the start of the festive season. It was nice that Matteo and his partner, Leanna, could also meet the Barr Equine team.

Good food, a few drinks and many laughs were had by all.
We would like to wish all our wonderful clients a Happy Christmas, and thank you for your support in 2022!

Poor little Erwin who we helped last week. Like many miniature ponies and horses, he struggles with his teeth. In this case one of his teeth is rotated and the resulting periodontal (gum) disease has caused a communication to develop between his mouth and nasal passage.
This was first spotted at a routine examination by Matteo, and then followed up by Rob, who has placed a composite plug to prevent food impaction with the aim that the fistula (communication) can heal.
Happy Endings Rescue is an excellent charity doing so much good work in the South East caring for and re-homing horses, ponies and donkeys.

If you have a miniature pony or horse, we are fully equipped with specialist equipment specifically to deal with the challenges their small mouths create, so please contact us to see how Matteo or Rob can help.
