🐶💩Advisory information - Diarrhoea💩🐶

Over the past few weeks we have seen an increase in dogs presenting with diarrhoea and/or vomiting.

Dogs are scavengers and eat just about about anything so a dietary indiscretion is not that uncommon, however just like in humans gastric illnesses can be caused by bacteria or viruses too!

⭐️Our top tips of treating diarrhoea at home⭐️

✅Do not starve them or withhold food: The gut needs food to repair.

We recommend small, frequent meals of easily digestible protein and carbohydrate. Alternatively please pop in and pick up a balanced prescription diet designed specifically for gastrointestinal upsets.

💩Hydration is very important so always ensure they have access to water

💩Getting your dog to drink may be a challenge so try crushing up some kibble or adding a small amount of wet food into their water to make a 'soup'. This will encourage them to drink and increase their water intake

💩Provide them with a dog oral rehydration fluids which contains the electrolytes they may loose whilst having vomiting and diarrhoea

💩 Collect a probiotics and prebiotic supplement from to help feed and replenish their gut flora

✅All of the above is available to collect over the counter from your veterinary practice.

If your dog is still bright and eating with infrequent episodes of diarrhoea then the above may be enough to get them back on track however;

⚠️Diarrhoea in young dogs, dogs suffering with concurrent disease, those taking daily medications or the elderly are more likely to require veterinary intervention

⚠️If diarrhoea persists and is profuse, they are not eating, they seem unwell or are also vomiting we STRONGLY recommend they come in to see a vet

⚠️ if your dog starts to pass stools with fresh blood (red) or old blood (black) please contact your vet ASAP

Other tips;

✅ Avoid walking them in public areas whilst they are unwell as they may spread the illness

✅ Ensure good hand hygiene when stroking dogs (some pathogens can be spread from dogs to people)

✅Discourage your dog from drinking from puddles and stagnant water

✅ Do not allow your dog to drink from public dog water bowls

✅ Ensure your dogs vaccinations are up to date

✅Wash their food bowls and chew toys regularly

✅Do not socialise them with other dogs for a good few days until after symptoms resolve
