Welcoming a puppy into our lives can be one of the most rewarding experiences but requires a lot of preparation, good experiences and training. This can set puppies up for happy adventures as they mature and grow; and help prevent issues further on in life. In this months’ article Faye Hasler, Puppy School tutor for Maidenhead shares some key points for owners to consider.

Genetics and breeding

It is recognised that the early weeks of a puppy’s life are a key time for shaping their future behaviour and preparing them to become a well-adjusted pet. If you are buying a puppy, choosing your breeder carefully is so important as their impact on your puppy’s life is huge. If you are adopting a rescue pup, try to get as much information on your pup’s early life as possible. Puppies are often described as ‘blank pages’ which they are most definitely not! There are many factors that can contribute to the various behaviours seen in puppies and dogs including genetics, breed characteristics, the environment in which they are born and raised in, how calm and relaxed mum is during her pregnancy and the type of care she is able to provide for her puppies. Weeks 3 to 13 of a puppy’s development are a key time; puppies can be sensitive to environmental influences during this stage and the majority of this time is spent with the breeder. In many respects a puppy’s temperament could be considered as a combination of genetics and early life experiences, this all sits with the breeder.

Socialisation and habituation

A careful plan of socialisation which involves all living things including but not limited to, learning to interact appropriately with humans, other dogs, other animals, visiting various places and habituation, which involves becoming accustomed to non-threatening and everyday things in the environment, will support your puppy in being comfortable with the various experiences they will have in life. It is extremely important not to overwhelm your puppy with new experiences or misinterpret socialisation as just playing with other puppies or dogs. It is not enough simply to expose your puppy to lots of people, places, animals and experiences - to get the optimal benefit from these various experiences your puppy needs to be exposed in a way that suits their individual requirements. For example, a shy puppy will need to quietly observe a new experience from a safe distance to be able to learn that there is nothing to be concerned about. A frightened puppy or dog cannot learn effectively as their primary focus will be on remaining safe. A bold, outgoing puppy will need to learn that not everyone will want to interact with them. A carefully managed, safe, appropriate and thoughtful approach to introducing all aspects of life to your puppy is a far better approach than overwhelming a puppy in the name of ‘socialisation’. A well-adjusted dog needs a variety of good experiences in early life, throughout adolescence and into adulthood. Ensure that your puppy’s early experiences are positive and they are not forced into any situation they are uncomfortable with.

Training

By using positive reinforcement, also known as reward-based training, you can begin to teach your puppy some essential life skills in a way that will help prevent the usual puppy problems and will make the transition from puppy to adolescent smoother! Young puppies develop into adolescents quickly, generally at around five to six months of age and, depending on the individual and breed, adolescence usually finishes around 18 months to two years. It is not uncommon to see a change in behaviour during adolescence, continuing to use positive reinforcement during this often-challenging stage of development is essential. The use of positive reinforcement in dog training has been found to be associated with fewer behavioural problems and better obedience. In addition to being an effective approach to training that helps build a super relationship between you and your dog; it is a kind and ethical way to support your puppy or dog in learning how you would like them to behave. Along with supporting your puppy learning the behaviours you would like to see; you will need to manage and prevent any unwanted behaviours from being practised and becoming bad habits that are difficult to live with! Puppies can go through fearful or sensitive periods during the early weeks and months of their lives. It is important to be aware of changes in your pup’s behaviour and support them through the various stages of development that they will go through before becoming an adult dog. Finding a properly qualified and experienced reward-based trainer will help you navigate the early weeks and months of your puppy’s life and beyond.

🐾Puppy School was founded 20 years ago in 2003 by Gwen Bailey - she wanted to help and prevent dogs going into rescue because of behaviour issues and to counter old-fashioned punishment-based methods.
