Colleagues at Easter Ross Vets in Ross-shire, Scotland, have successfully applied for a Community Fund Grant from IVC Evidensia to support their fundraising efforts for Caithness Seal Rehab & Release.

The seal sanctuary takes care of seals in need off the Caithness coast and was opened in November 2022. Close to this beautiful, rugged coast, the team at the practice have been actively supporting the seal sanctuary. But when Vet Surgeon Jenessa Kurawski joined the practice in November 2023, she decided to ask the wider team if they would like to apply for a Community Grants Fund to continue the support. The decision was unanimous and the Community Fund Grant of £1000 was awarded.

She commented on her experience of using the Community Grants Fund:

“Being awarded this Community Grants Fund has meant the practice could help an incredibly worthwhile cause that means a great deal to many members of staff and the wider community.”

This we have been shining a spotlight on our incredible LGBTQIA+ community, supporting diversity and inclusion as part of our People Promise. Did you know that this year marks a decade since the first same-sex marriage took place in England and Wales, and 4 years since it became legal in Northern Ireland?

Becky Miskimmin, Reception and Referrals Manager in Northern Ireland says,

“Back in 2015 a campaign was launched to start a referendum in NI to legalise same-sex marriage. I had just come out of a 5-year relationship with a guy and was very torn about my sexuality. Where I had come from it was very much not a good thing to be gay. Especially someone who was in the church for many years. That was the year of my first Pride event and suddenly things started to make a bit more sense, but instead of addressing the issues I decided I wanted to leave the country and become cabin crew.

She went on to say,

“Little did I know I would meet my now wife! I told my parents one after each other and I am incredibly thankful that they were very supportive and with time I slowly came out to others. I am one of the lucky few to have very supportive friends and family!! Soon I took to the streets to march again for marriage equality and finally in 2020 it became Legal! I married my wife last year! Life seems scary and tough, you might even think to yourself that by ignoring things and trying to be ‘normal’ that life will be much easier... it isn’t. Once you accept yourself for who you are, you will finally feel like you can breathe.”

Bethan Lovvorn, RVN at Willow Veterinary Centres Buckinghamshire, has been featured in this month's Veterinary Nursing Journal to talk about being a clinical coach. She says,

“Becoming a clinical coach can be exciting and daunting at the same time for any veterinary nurse. However, when the training comes to an end, it feels amazing to watch your student qualify as an RVN.”

Our annual Brilliant People Awards recognise our colleagues who really live our values - We Care, We Dare and We Share.

We want to shout about those Brilliant People so we will be sharing a little bit about each colleague who won an award at the ceremony, starting with Emma James of Park Vets.

Emma is passionate about the welfare of her patients. She runs desensitisation classes for animals nervous about attending the practice and promotes the Yellow Dog campaign in clinic, supplying yellow ribbons to identify nervous dogs. She volunteers with rehoming and rescue charities outside of work and is involved with wildlife rehabilitation, welfare and release.

When the XL Bully legislation was announced, Emma organised an information evening open to the whole local community. She reached out to a team of behaviourists who agreed to volunteer their time to attend the information evening to help clients understand what the legislation meant for them and how to help their dogs lead happy fulfilling lives within the required restrictions. Emma is the embodiment of the IVC Evidensia We Care values and a very well-deserved recipient of our We Care (Clinical) Award for 2024!

This we’ve heard direct from people about their coming out stories, but what about from the parent’s point of view? Hear from Michelle Harper, Learning and Development Trainer, UK, about her son Max:

“My ‘Coming Out’ story is from a parental viewpoint. My daughter Emily approached me when she was younger, she had just started college and one day I woke up to a 4 page letter saying how she didn’t feel right in her body and wanted to live as a male. However, this was completely different as I didn’t know anything about ‘transition’ or ‘body dysmorphia’ – it was new ground for me, and for Emily or Max, as he was now known. I had Googled it and it said (at the time) that 86% of children commit suicide when no one listened or supported them about this. I vowed there and then that my child would not be that statistic.

“Max had come out at college and his peer group were fantastic and accepted who he was and why. There are milestones in life that I will never get, but they are replaced by other things that are just as good if not better. Fast forward 10 years and my son has a great life with his girlfriend and their dachshund Ziggy. I am so proud of the person he is today and the strength of character it has taken for him to show the world that you can be who you want to be and be happy, because that’s all I ever wanted for him, to be happy.

“There is no real support for parents. The advice I would give to any parent whose child wishes to transition is to listen. Don’t pass it off as a phase and speak to the right people for support, and if you can, speak to other parents that have gone through the journey. Give yourself time to grieve what you lose and celebrate what you gain because as the saying goes, as one door closes, another one opens. Finally, embrace the changes: from the name change to the haircuts to the clothes, go on the journey with them as it’s such a great way to understand all they are going through.”

Shini and Bolu demonstrated some of the ways vets review the health of pets and answered viewers' questions on pet care and becoming a vet. You can catch the episode tonight on CBBC at 5pm!

Wow! Just one week to go to our Graduate Academy Congress for 2024!

We have a packed schedule of lectures and practical workshop sessions, as part of their journey with us to give graduates a flying start to their veterinary careers. And we're looking forward to hearing from our extra special keynote speaker, Sarah Furness who will arm our graduates with the skills they need to 'thrive under fire'.

We can't wait to see all of our Graduates coming together from across the group to enjoy the excellent CPD, sharing of expertise and, of course, the gala dinner!
