One of the joys of being an equine vet is helping to create new life ❤️
We do a little happy dance (mostly out of view from clients!! 💃🤣) every time we see one of these little pregnancies!

It’s getting pretty late in the season now, but if anyone is thinking of breeding this year (or next) and would like to chat things through with Julie or Charlie, just give us a call or drop us a message x

✋Now is a great time to be taking poo samples for worm counts if you haven’t already done so this grazing season ✋

☀️🌦️This warm, humid weather is perfect for worm multiplication so it’s important to identify who the super shedders are in your herd before they contaminate your paddocks 💩💩💩

We have teamed up with the wonderful Westgate Labs as a supplier of their worm egg count kits (£15 each or please contact us for discounts on larger numbers or packs of annual test kits!)

All you have to do is pick a sample of poo from 5 different locations within a fresh pile of 💩, pop it in the sample container, squeeze out the air then keep cold before popping it in the post (ideally on the same day)

Results will come back to us and we will be in touch to discuss a plan for worming or hopefully not 🤞

Responsible, targeted worm control is our goal 🤗

‼️Watch out everyone,Charlie may have gotten a little bit obsessed by ultrasound‼️

✨🐎🌟She has just spent the past 2 days with one of the best horse locomotion experts in the world and godfather of equine veterinary ultrasound Jean-Marie Denoix 🌟🐎✨

Throughout the course, Charlie has been practising perfecting her ultrasound techniques on various regions of the horse and gaining up to date knowledge on the diagnosis and rehabilitation of various orthopaedic problems. She can’t wait to get back to work and show off some of her new skills 🧐

Veterinary medicine is often described as an imperfect art but how lucky are we to work with the anatomy of such a beautiful animal 💞🐴
This venogram has been used to determine the degree of compression of the veins within this horses foot. We usually do this in cases of laminitis but it can also be useful in horses with chronic foot pain. 🤕
The procedure involves injecting a special dye into one of the veins of the horses foot and then taking a series of X-rays to assess the change in perfusion over time.
As ambulatory vets we strive to bring cutting edge diagnostic techniques to your yard when indicated, as long as it is safe to do so. 🩻🩺🚘

We are on the lookout for someone who's truly one-of-a-kind to join our small but mighty team!👀🤩

We are initially looking for someone to work part time (2-3 days per week, days and hours negotiable) to help Beccy in the office📞

Experience of equine/veterinary terminology, excellent customer service skills, the ability to successfully multi-task, a willingness to learn and use your own initiative are important to us. In return, we promise to look after you and any equines you may have, like you are part of our family🐎🥰🐴

We are also very excited to shortly be moving to our new office near Grampound Road with excellent links to mid Cornwall🥳

If anyone thinks this is the challenge for them, please email your CV with details as to why you would like to work with us to [email protected] ASAP🐴

Flies and eyes are not a good mix 🙈
We’ve had a few cases of conjunctivitis, presumably with this humid weather and the return of the pesky flies 🪰🪦
If you have a horse with a sore or swollen eye, we’d always encourage you to contact us for some advice straight away.
Gentle bathing with clean water shouldn’t do any harm but please don’t apply any medicines without professional advice.
Every eye case is different and the wrong treatment could cause more harm than good. 🙏
If the eye is closed this is potentially very serious so please don’t ignore it, prompt treatment could save the eye. 🤞🐴

How lucky are we to have such a good bunch of farriers in Cornwall?!
It’s that time of year when horses are throwing shoes, hooves are cracking and laminitis is rearing it’s ugly head…. again 😩😢
So we just wanted to do a shout out to all of the great farriers who pull the stops out to help us when we need them. We very much appreciate having you as part of our team and without a doubt we get better results with you on board 🐎🐎🐎

❤️☀️❤️☀️❤️
Just when we thought we couldn’t love our clients anymore we have had a double whammy of yummy cake in the sunshine and the kindest review ever!

As clients, you’ll probably never quite get how far a thank you goes. It’s not why we get up in the middle of the night or tolerate getting covered in mud (or other more disgusting things 💩) but gratitude certainly does make us very happy 😃

So thank you for all of the yummy cakes, cookies & shortbread of late and thank you for saying thank you!

“Highly recommend Julie & Charlie! Very experienced, professional & empathetic, I feel at ease with them treating my horses & really trust their advice and diagnosis. Becky on the administration side of things is also very professional & attentive. Overall the best vet practice I've dealt with by far “🥰

🐴💩COLIC WARNING 💩🐴
We have seen an unusual spike in colic cases this week for unknown reason but possibly related to the change in weather ☀️☔️ and grass constituents.

Please can we remind everyone to be mindful of the volume of grass your horses, ponies & donkeys have access to and to keep a close eye on the volume and consistency of droppings 💩💩
For those on restricted grazing, please ensure plenty of clean, fresh water is always available and monitor that droppings are passed regularly and are not too dry.
Any paddock changes should ideally be made slowly, over 5-7 days.

If you have any concerns that your animals are quieter than normal or are showing any signs of colic (pawing, flank watching, attempting to roll) please ring us IMMEDIATELY 🙏
We will often ask you to walk them around until we arrive (if safe to do so) to prevent them from rolling.

Hopefully things will settle down soon but if you have any concerns at all, we are always at the end of the phone for you, day and night 🥰

The final piece to our puzzle, let us introduce you to Beccy, our Practice Manager🧩

Beccy is Cornish born and raised. She has grown up on her family's beef farm, taking her old Haflinger pony on hacks through the woods and baking when time allows🐎🧁

She now lives a stone's throw away from Julie, on her partners dairy farm🐄
When the warmer Cornish weather finally appears, you can find Beccy at the beach, either having a barbecue, attempting to stay upright on her paddleboard or chasing the sunset🌅

Loves- Any sweet treat!!🍫 Bruno (her collie dog) Bianca (Her warmblood mare), reading a book in the sunshine, or wrapped up in a blanket next to the fire🔥
Hates- the wind & rain🌧️
Favourite place- Cornish beaches
Dream job- working for Duchy Equine Vets💖 or owning a bakery, but mainly doing the baking🥐🍰

🫏🫏Happy World Donkey Day🫏🫏

A day to reflect on these beautiful little souls, that still work tirelessly in so many countries. Thankfully all of the donkeys we are fortunate to work with, have now found human kindness and care.
We particularly love their curiosity & playfulness. It’s never a dull (or quiet! 🤣) day when there is a donkey in it 🫏❤️🫏

Guest speaker, Dave Rendle MRCVS will be giving some great advice on ‘How to get from fat to fit’ - for horses, ponies & donkeys….not people 🤣🙈
We look forward to seeing you all Tuesday 14th May @ The Victoria Inn, Roche for a 7.30pm start.

If your name is not already down, get in quick as we only have a couple of spaces remaining 🏃🐎

Continuing from our 'Meet the team' post last week, we are pleased to introduce Charlie, the second vet and director of our Duchy Duo👯‍♀️

Originally from West Sussex, Charlie graduated in 1996 from The Royal Veterinary College, London🩺She has spent most of her career as an equine vet working in various practices in Hampshire, including a ten-year stint at The Liphook Equine hospital where she gained a certificate in Equine Practice (the equivalent of a Masters) and first met Julie👋🏼
Julie and Charlie’s husband, Mike, lured Charlie to Cornwall in 2019. She has since developed an addiction to open water swimming and can be found down on The Roseland at every opportunity when not annoying Mike by leaving various half-finished upholstery and sewing projects littered about the house or forcing her children to spend time with her.🏊🏼‍♂️🪡🧵

Loves: Rocky (her Labrador)🦮, Native Grain pastries🥐, her ancient campervan, a good book📖, a large mug of tea☕️ or ideally all those things together! Hates: mushrooms🍄‍🟫 Favourite place – Polyjoke or Midhurst common Dream job – Vet at Duchy Equine🩺🧑🏽‍⚕️

As we’ve been open for over 6 months now and we’ve still not met all of our lovely clients… yet! (which means your animals must be healthy 😃🤞) We thought it might be helpful to do a ‘meet the team’ so you can get to know us a bit better 🤗

First up is one of our vets and directors, Julie otherwise known as ‘Me Julie’!

Originally hailing from Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 (hence the accent) Julie qualified from Edinburgh University in 2005 and worked in a variety of equine practices before travelling to work in New Zealand. She moved to Cornwall in 2009 to start a family with her husband Phil (also a vet 🩺) and has been here ever since!
Aside from work, Julie is kept busy with her 2 sons and their sporting activities and their menagerie of animals at home; horses, dogs, cats, chickens, sheep…🐴🐕🐈‍⬛🐓🐑
when time permits she enjoys riding but is now resigned to being a happy hacker 🐎

Likes: CHOCOLATE!! Silent discos & sunshine ☀️
Dislikes: ironing & grumpy people!!
Favourite place: Mawgan Porth beach
Dream job: vet at Duchy Equine! or an astronaut 🚀😂

🩺Cough…cough…cough🩺
We are having a flurry of respiratory cases at the moment 🤔 difficult to tell if it’s related to the change in weather or the fact that everyone has started riding again ☀️🕶️🐎🐴
There are lots of different reasons why horses cough but generally it is a sign of inflammation in the lungs - not good news 😢
An occasional mild cough at the start of exercise is usually nothing too sinister but if you are hearing horses coughing regularly, particularly at rest then it’s important to have them checked and treated if necessary. 💉

We are fortunate to have a nifty battery powered endoscope that allows us to have a look down the horses airways and collect samples to reach an accurate diagnosis. This helps us to choose the best treatment & management to get your beloved horses, ponies and donkeys well again
