We are aware of the strength of feeling around an incident where two dogs were destroyed by fi****ms officers on Commercial Road, E14 on Sunday 7 May.

Following the incident, we have voluntarily referred ourselves to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) who are now independently investigating. This means we are limited in what we can say so that we do not prejudice their investigation or the separate criminal proceedings which are now underway relating to the man who was in possession of the dogs. In light of this, we haven’t been able to provide detailed information on social media so far.

Officers responded to reports of a woman being attacked by a dog in Commercial Road, E14. As part of their enquiries to safeguard the public, local officers – supported by specialists from the Dog Support Unit and Specialist Fi****ms Command – spoke to a man in the area who was in possession of the two dogs. Following this interaction, which failed to bring the dogs satisfactorily under control, fi****ms officers destroyed the two dogs at the scene. The owner of the dogs was arrested at the scene. Police Taser was discharged. He was taken into custody and later charged.

A 46-year-old man has pleaded guilty to being in possession or custody of a dog whilst disqualified from owning or keeping a dog. He has pleaded not guilty to being the person/owner of a dog that was dangerously out of control (with injury) and a trial has now been set for February 2024. At the trial, all evidence will be presented in full, cross examined and a verdict will be considered by a jury.

Short video clips shared online do not show the full context of an incident. Both the criminal case and the independent investigation will consider all information, evidence and review actions taken.

Nationally, we are seeing an increase in the number of dangerous dog cases. In London, there has been a 60 per cent increase in dangerous dog offences since 2018.
