Confused what a half halt means? Frustrated that you can’t work your horse in a consistent outline without lots of gadgets? Fed up of instructors that just shout and never listen? Frightened of asking those silly questions and never really understanding? My aim is to give instruction that is a little different, being a patient instructor that will take you and your horse back to basics using the ‘

Scales of Training’, allowing you to work together as a team
All levels of riders / horses taken for flatwork/ dressage/ jumping. Also available for schooling/ holiday cover. Liz offers a professional, knowledgeable service that is perhaps slightly different to the ‘traditional instructor’, being patient and calm, allowing the rider to ask those questions they’ve never dared to ask before like “what is a half halt?”. Liz’s goal is to allow her riders to understand exactly why things are going wrong and how they can begin correcting problems, in a logical, easy to understand way. “We’ve all had months of ‘banging our heads against a wall’ feeling that we are never going to get that correct canter lead or keep our hands up and still, while the horse works in an outline.”

Liz will teach you the ‘classical way’ of working your horse, moving up the ‘Scales of Training’ while also concentrating on you as a rider – “after all your horse can’t work properly if you are sitting incorrectly!” It’s amazing how quickly riders can feel more confident and positive about their riding without the use of gadgets, allowing horse and rider to work in harmony. Are you nervous handling or riding your horse? Or do you suffer from competition nerves or hate jumping specific fences (eg ditches, tables)? If the answer is ‘yes’ please read on! Neuro linguistic programming (NLP) is a powerful tool that utilizes a range of methods to change how people cope under such stressful situations, making them put those negative, demoralising thoughts to one side and focus on positive, uplifting thoughts. The different techniques employed by me include the use of language, anchoring techniques, swish and visualisation patterns often alongside hypnosis. By harnessing the power of the mind to produce positive rather than negative thoughts, we can improve personal performance by generating a positive circle of success rather than the negative, viscous circle of doubt. By training the mind we allow the rider to enter a ‘positive zone’ immediately and whenever they feel negative and allow them to perform at their best, no matter what the context (both on and off the horse and in other stressful times too). As a fellow horse rider I understand the needs of clients. Indeed I suffered from a crisis of confidence when preparing for my Stage 3 BHS jumping exams. In despair I turned to self-hypnosis and NLP techniques. I realised how powerful these techniques can be and passed my exams with flying colours! If you decide that you need my help, please contact me about the different packages I can offer. Most of the sessions would be performed off the horse in a mutually convenient, comfortable place that allows you to totally relax and give 100% concentration to the techniques. Be prepared to come with an open mind, work hard and you must be determined to change! For information please visit my website: www.thehorseridingcoach.co.uk

On Sunday I did a private Working Equitation clinic with groups from two livery yards. The day started with a small breeze & a cloudless sky but quickly changed to 35mph gusts & rather cold 🙄 but this did not dampen our spirits & we all had an enjoyable day. Sorry I didn’t get pictures of you all! Thanks Louise & Gaynor for organising. If you would like to organise a similar clinic at your yard, then please do get in touch.

The WE obstacles are out until Saturday, if you would like to come & have a play, let me know 🙂. Here is a snippet from the rider’s view - till I dropped the phone 🤣.

Working Equitation can be a fun way to learn new skills, whether you hack out or compete dressage/ jumping, as well as being a sport in its own right. Founded between Portugal, Spain & Italy, the obstacles part of the sport reflects skills that riders herding cows would use on the mountains, from opening a gate, crossing a bridge, negotiating a livestock pen, manoeuvring around obstacles & so much more. Private Coaching sessions available this Wednesday, afternoon & evening Howden (near Goole & M62)

So those that follow the page will know that I have a rather tall young lad that I backed & have very slowly been bringing on for the last two years. This week we felt ready to go out to a proper dance party. As a first event we went for a quiet stress less dressage. He didn’t put a hoof wrong. We are rather excited for the boy’s future. ❤️❤️❤️

Totally out of our comfort zone yesterday Bronte & I did our first working equitation competition. Made up of three phases: dressage, ease of handling (in the video) & speed (the ease of handling course at speed). It was great fun.
As a fast growing sport that we are wanting to bring properly to the North, I will be attending an official instructor course next week. 🙂

I can’t quite believe where the week has flown, but last Monday I took Bronte to the Area 16 BRC qualifier for the national champs. She did super winning both tests (elementary & medium with a PB in each for us 🥳), which means we are off to the national champs in September.
This comes after struggling to get consistency from her & some awful behaviour. So a scan of her ovaries revealed an extremely enlarged follicle which was stuck. Treatment & she is feeling so much better.
Small clip of her elementary test. We still are searching for a bit that makes her happy in her mouth. 🤦‍♀️

Pole work can really help in so many ways & you can be inventive with them. Here five year old Darcey is learning rhythm & relaxation in walk & trot (the first scale of training), along with suppleness on half 10m circles & straight lines (the second scale) along with transitions.

For those aware I have had this week off - last chance for some time with the kids before they go off back to school- who can believe it?!! I also competed in the British Dressage Petplan Area Festival with Bronte last week - who can have major downs as well as ups. This last week she did good & got a beautiful ’frilly’.
