Please join me in CONGRATULATING these very special puppies and their humans for completing their Puppy School course.

Milo, Milo and Rufus graduated on Monday and Luna, Maple, Raine, Rizzo and Rosie graduated tonight. Unfortunately, Billie and Ozzy couldn't make their final class but they also did so well throughout the course!

These puppy teams have been truly amazing. The progress they have made throughout the week has been fantastic - a credit to the effort and time they've been putting in at home between classes. The relationships they have with their puppies have flourished. They are wonderful people and wonderful puppies who have excelled in their training! WELL DONE to them all! ๐Ÿ‘

I can't write this post though without a few words about beautiful puppy Molly who should have been graduating tonight too. Molly was a sweetheart who tragically passed away just before her Week 5 class. She touched the heart of everyone in her class and not a day has gone past without me thinking of her and her family. I'll always remember her sweet little face watching me in class and the joy she brought to every session. Sending love to her family - Molly will forever be part of our Puppy School family.

Awww Sheila you beautiful girl!! I first met Sheila when she came to one of my Puppy School courses a few months back. She was such a shy little puppy and hugely worried on her first day at school. Fast forward to now though and Sheila is such a different dog! She's happy, confident and can't wait to drag her mum and dad into our Canine College training room! EVERYONE loves Sheila! She's such a sweetheart and here she is demonstrating how calm she can be when crossing the road (albeit the excitement of getting to her mum who was filming took over a bit but that's understandable ๐Ÿ˜)! Well done Sheila, lovely work! ๐Ÿถ

๐™Š๐™ง๐™ž๐™œ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™จ
The Old English Sheepdog (OES) is a distinctive and iconic breed, instantly recognisable by its thick, shaggy coat and rolling bear-like gait. Despite the name, the breed is not especially ancient or strictly used for sheep herding. They originated in England during the early 1800s and were primarily developed in the rural regions of southwestern England. Their main role was that of a droverโ€™s dog - moving livestock, particularly cattle and sheep, from farms to market. The breed's ancestry likely includes a mixture of European herding dogs, such as the Bearded Collie and various types of Russian and European working breeds, bred for stamina, intelligence and ruggedness.

Sadly, the OES is now considered rare and is listed on the UK's list of Vulnerable Native Breeds. This is largely due to its declining popularity, grooming demands and changing lifestyle preferences among dog owners.

The OES is a large, strong and muscular dog with a square build. Their most striking feature is their dense, double coat, which is profusely shaggy and weather-resistant. The coat can come in shades of grey, blue or blue merle, typically with contrasting white markings on the head, chest and legs. One of the hallmark characteristics of the breed is its head, often obscured by a thick fringe of hair that partially covers its expressive eyes, which may be brown, blue or heterochromatic (one of each). Historically, their tails were docked ๐Ÿ˜ข, giving rise to the nickname 'bobtail', though this practice is now thankfully illegal in many countries and many OES' nowadays are seen with beautiful, plumed tails.

The temperament of the OES is gentle, affectionate, good-natured and dependable. This breed forms close bonds with their family and is known for being especially gentle and patient with children. Despite their size, they are often a sensitive and soft-hearted companion that thrives on human interaction. They tend to be sociable, preferring to be in the company of people rather than left alone for extended periods. OES' are often playful, comical and clownish, retaining a puppy-like exuberance well into adulthood.

The breed retains strong herding instincts and some individuals may attempt to herd children, other animals or even adults by nudging or circling them. They are naturally alert and protective of their home and family, often vocal, with a deep, resonant bark, making them effective watchdogs. However, they are not known for aggression and are typically reserved rather than confrontational with strangers.

As mentioned above, they thrive on companionship and can suffer from separation anxiety if left alone too often.

They are adaptable to various home environments as long as their needs are met but they are not ideal for apartments due to their size and energy levels.

Intelligence:
Intellectually, the OES is a highly intelligent breed, bred to think independently while working livestock. They are quick to learn and capable of performing complex tasks but their intelligence also means they can become bored if under-stimulated. Some individuals may also exhibit a streak of independence if training is not consistent and engaging. Their ability to learn quickly makes them good candidates for canine sports, including hoopers, agility, obedience and even herding trials.

Trainability:
The OES responds best to gentle, patient, consistent, positive reinforcement training and early socialisation. Harsh correction is counterproductive with this sensitive breed. They benefit from early exposure to different people, environments and situations to prevent timidity or wariness. Training should be mentally stimulating and interactive, as repetitive or dull exercises can cause the OES to lose interest.

Exercise is a critical component of life with an OES. Although they may appear mellow indoors, these dogs require moderate to high levels of daily physical and mental activity to stay healthy and content. Ideally, they should receive at least one to two hours of daily exercise, which can include brisk walks, play sessions and off lead time in a safe area. In addition to physical activity, mental stimulation is equally important for the OES. Without adequate exercise and engagement, they may become bored, anxious or develop destructive behaviours.

As pets, OES' are excellent family dogs but are best suited to homes that can accommodate their size, energy and grooming requirements. They are not typically well-suited to apartment living unless they are given ample outdoor access and exercise - they are much better suited to homes with a sufficiently sized and enclosed garden. They thrive in households where someone is home for most of the day, as they do not do well in isolation. They also need owners who are committed to regular grooming as their thick coat can easily become matted or dirty if neglected. This breed is not a good match for individuals who prefer low-maintenance pets.

Health-wise, the OES is generally robust but is prone to a number of hereditary conditions. These include hip dysplasia, various eye disorders such as progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) and cataracts. They can also be susceptible to autoimmune conditions, hypothyroidism and congenital deafness. Skin issues, including hot spots and allergies can occur - often as a result of insufficient grooming or dietary sensitivities. Due to the breedโ€™s grooming needs and potential health concerns, regular grooming, veterinary checkups and preventive care are essential, along with a high-quality diet and responsible breeding practices.

๐™‡๐™ž๐™›๐™š๐™จ๐™ฅ๐™–๐™ฃ
The typical lifespan of an OES ranges from 10 to 12 years, although some can live longer with attentive care, proper nutrition and a healthy lifestyle.

With their charming personalities, distinctive shaggy appearance and affectionate nature, OES' make wonderful family pets for those willing to meet their physical, mental and grooming needs. For the right home, the Old English Sheepdog offers a unique blend of intelligence, devotion and character that makes them a truly rewarding companion.

And guess what - there's a reason why I've made this week's Breed Focus Friday about the Old English Sheepdog. Can you guess why? ๐Ÿ˜€

Tonight was one of the hardest classes I've ever run.

I got a devastating call this morning from one of my puppy parents due to attend their week 5 puppy class tonight to say their beautiful puppy had been involved in a road traffic collision on Monday evening and sadly she didn't survive the accident.

This puppy was the sweetest of dogs. She used to sit at the front of the class and just watch me, avidly. So much so, I commented on it every week, she really made me smile. She was so attentive, gave the best cuddle when she came in and was amazing in every demonstration I did with her.

Her parents were wonderful people. I'm heartbroken for them.

In tonight's class, I lit a candle for her which sparkled throughout and got a card for everyone to sign. I've just read everyone's comments and they've all written such heartfelt messages and clearly she made such an impact to her fellow classmates as well as me.

Please give your dogs a huge hug and a few extra treats tonight for no other reason than to tell them how much they are loved - we never know how much time we have with them but how ever long it is, it's never enough.

RIP baby girl. I missed you tonight. ๐Ÿ’”

Everybody needs good neighbours.

If you're planning on having a private firework display in your garden, I'd like to encourage you to instead attend an organised public display, but if you absolutely need to hold one in your own garden and you know there are pets on your road, please do the good neighbour thing and let people know when you're having it. This will enable your neighbours with pets to prepare as much as possible and ensure they are home to help their pets feel safe.

Trust me, it'll be hugely appreciated! ๐Ÿถ

Great post here. I see these posts all the time. Yes, it's great that people are asking for help, but sadly, it's generally in the wrong place and many of those that give advice, whilst they have good intentions, they just don't know the full picture which means their advice could do more harm than good if implemented.

Like this post suggests, if you're wanting to find a good Netflix series to watch you may need to be more specific in your post (e.g. action, comedy, thriller, true crime, fiction, documentary, family friendly etc) otherwise you're inviting all kinds of responses, some of which are unlikely to be suitable.

It's the same with dog training but of course more important. A reputable trainer won't give advice on minimal information. They'll delve deep as this will help them work out the cause of the behaviour to ensure the most suitable training programme is given ... or that medical advice is sought first.

A dog's behaviour and training needs can be complex so next time you see a post from someone asking for behavioural advice on social media, the best thing you can do is advise them to seek professional help ๐Ÿ˜Š.

I came across a post in a public group today that really boggled my mind.

It was a vague question, no real context, no background, and yet ten people had already jumped in with advice. Not one had asked for more information.

It reminded me of how often I see this happen with posts about dogs. Someone shares a concern, often about a serious behavioural issue, and before you know it, the comments fill up with random advice.

I get that it often comes from a good place, people genuinely wanting to help. But sometimes, itโ€™s less about helping and more about the urge to say something.

The problem is, this โ€œhit and runโ€ advice can have real consequences. Itโ€™s not like someone recommending a movie, you watch it, think itโ€™s rubbish, and turn it off.

Weโ€™re talking about lives here. Dogs who are often already struggling, which is why their humans turn to social media for help in the first place.

What if the advice someone gives, without knowing the dogโ€™s history, triggers, or environment, leads to a bite, and ultimately euthanasia?

Sadly, it happens more than people realise. Advice given with no context, followed by someone desperate to fix a problem, can end in tragedy.

And who ultimately suffers?
The dog.

If your dog needs help with an element of theor behaviour, please speak to the right reputable professional.

If you see a post on social media asking for quick fixes or magic wand bits of advice, the best advice most people can normally give is to speak to a reputable professional.

If you truly want to help dogs, then we need to ensure they get ethical and reputable suppprt.
