Let’s talk about keeping our dogs safe when out in public and how we can ensure we’re doing this daily. 🦮
Along with the ability to walk your dog on a loose lead next to you, I believe being able to have a good solid recall around distractions is also necessary to keep your own, as well as other dogs safe on a day to day basis. 🗣️

What do I mean ‘around distractions’? Anything that your dog may find distracting. Be that other dogs, people, children, birds, good smells, deep ponds, bikes - you name it!
If you can’t call your dog(s) back they are not under your control. Anything can go wrong.
How can we test if they have good recall?
Can you get your dogs attention and engagement around these distractions when on their normal short lead? If so, test it on a 15m long line and keep testing it until 100% of the time they are able to listen and come back to you. Keep putting these reps in and build it up. It takes time, but over time, you will create more value in being with you than other stimulus. The major plus side to this is being able to relax and enjoy your walks much better because you’ll have peace of mind they’re under control. This doesn’t mean your dog can’t ever mingle with other dogs and people, but it does mean if you need to get them back, you can 💯

Are you currently trying to improve your dogs recall? 🗣️ If so drop me a message or comment below!

“You must have bribed them with treats!” Nope! They’re also not under some magical listening spell! 😂🧙‍♀️
Through structure, boundaries and expectations EVERY walk the dogs know what to do. They’ve learnt how to sit still and listen to me despite any motivating competitors such as whether their peer moves first next to them or people with dogs are walking past. The reward comes after this to pay them for the good behaviour. The Duration of time they can stay there without moving is built up over time. The amount of Distance I can get between myself and them is built up over time as well as the Distractions going on around them whilst being able to hold their sit stay. This is how you proof a behaviour and it takes time! It doesn’t happen over night but small bits of training amount to a bigger picture!

Our Pack Walk Programme: designed to build each dogs confidence whilst creating neutral and healthy associations to other dogs, people and their surroundings. We actively incorporate and build on every day life skills we believe each dog needs to allow them to be all round good dogs such as; loose lead walking, good recall and impulse control activities such as sit stays.
A little bit of training each day goes a long way ❤️🐾

This funny looking Jack Russell is my dog, Enzo. Without having done a DNA test, Enzo is Jack Russell cross Whippet. We rescued him over 3 years ago. At the time I was looking at rescuing a Springer Spaniel or Cocker but that didn’t work out. Enzo came to us with pretty severe reactivity, no recall and separation anxiety.
Enzo has now been on the Pack walks for a couple of years and now recently is assisting me on Training sessions and Group classes as my stooge dog. They say you don’t get the dog you want, you get the dog you need and for me, Enzo is just that. He’s taught me so much and helped me to grow as a dog trainer and handler.
He is my heart dog ❤️🐾

Ciara is our new part time Dog Walker. She’s going to be completing her training with us over the next 4 weeks. The next few weeks will be all about introducing her to the dogs and building individual relationships.

Chocolate Lab, Harold enjoying his walk this morning! 🌦️

I’m loving getting to know Harold. Being a typical Labrador he loves muddy long walks, swimming and of course a ball! I’m really enjoying make him ‘work’ harder for the ball as a simple game of fetch is very easy for him. We’ve been doing some blind retrieves in the dense brambles and working on a sit and wait before being sent out to retrieve the ball.

Good job Harold! 🥳

Following on from yesterday’s question on our stories: Does a wagging tail always mean a happy dog?

When we think about dog communication, dogs communicate a large percentage of how they feel through their body language. This includes with their ears, eyes, teeth and their tail. A wagging tail communicates excitement. Excitement in the dog world is different to the human world. It’s important we’re able to put a cap on our dogs excitement and arousal levels as an overly excited/aroused dog is not a natural or healthy state for your dog to exist in. I often hear my clients or passing dog owners say something like: “his tail’s wagging so I don’t know why he starts barking!”. The reality is a dog who is about to bite you will have a wagging tail. A dog who is happily searching for a retrieve will have a wagging tail. A police dog who is getting ready to be sent in to take down a suspect will have a wagging tail. Excitement can lead to frustration, frustration can lead to reactivity. As always, giving your dog the right amount of positive stimulation and a regular healthy outlet for their energy levels will undoubtedly avoid any unwanted excitement/frustrations in your dogs behaviour. Knowing this, I will always advocate to teach your dog to exist around other dogs and people/children, as unless you have an extensive amount of knowledge and experience with dog behaviour and psychology, you may be unknowingly putting your own dog or family members at risk by approaching strange dogs.

Here’s some of the weekly Pack Walk dogs practising calm and mastering how to do-exist with each other 🫶🏻🐾

It was Hannah’s last day today! We are so sad to see her go but Hannah has just been promoted in the police and is now going to be working Monday - Friday in her new role. We will miss her so much but wish her the best of luck and so thankful of how much of an asset she has been to the business. ❤️🥹

We all want to enjoy our dogs and give them the life they deserve, but sometimes we don’t always understand our dogs and how their needs can be different from ours as humans. By taking the time to really understand and listen to what our dogs are trying to tell us rather than what we think they might want, will change your life as a dog owner - it’s like getting to speak a different language! Your dog will love you even more for it ❤️

In training it can be easy to get overwhelmed and frustrated with your journey. But if you just start with focusing on one thing first, put all your time and energy into getting your lead walking really good for example. The wide spread ramifications of getting one part of your training nailed are endless when it comes to our relationships with our dogs. Like anything, you get out what you put in! Put in that extra 10 minutes a day into improving your dogs training and they’ll thank you! 🤞🏻
