Bonfire Night is nearly here - and whilst the topic of fireworks can be very divisive amongst people, the one thing that we can be certain of is that fireworks can be frightening and stressful for guinea pigs.
Guinea pigs are sensitive to sudden noises and vibrations, and stress can affect both their health and behaviour.

Here’s how to keep your piggies safe and calm 👇

🏡 Prepare Their Environment

Bring outdoor hutches inside to a quiet, enclosed area such as a shed, garage, or indoor space (away from fumes).

If that’s not possible, cover the hutch with thick blankets or duvets (leaving ventilation) to muffle sound and block flashes.

Make sure they have plenty of hay, hides and tunnels to feel secure.

🎧 Reduce the Noise

Close windows, doors, and curtains to lessen bangs and flashes.

Play calm background noise like the radio, white noise, or gentle music to help mask firework sounds.

🫶 Provide Comfort

Keep them with their bonded companions – their company is reassuring.

Avoid overhandling during fireworks, let them hide and feel safe.

Offer extra forage or their favourite veggies as a positive distraction.

📍 Plan Ahead

Check your local community or Facebook groups for firework display times and locations so you can prepare in advance.
Knowing when displays are scheduled means you can prepare early and ensure your pigs are settled before the noise begins.

💚 Remember

Stress can cause real health issues for guinea pigs – including loss of appetite or gut slowdown. A calm, secure environment is the best protection you can give them.

Help spread the word to other guinea pig parents by sharing this post so more piggies can stay safe this Bonfire Night! 💥
