🎆**Last Minute Firework Tips For Fearful Pets!**🎆

Tonight is going to be a big night for fireworks and if you have a pet who finds them stressful, it is not too late to help them!

🐶 Dogs🐶

🐶 Tire them out while it is still light.

If your dog has already been scared by the fireworks before tonight, they are likely to start to anticipate them as soon as the light starts to fade, so get them out for a good walk well before this happens.

And don't forget mental exercise is also very tiring for dogs. So feed their meals today from snuffle mats, puzzle balls or just scatter feed in your kitchen. Anything to give their brain a workout and encourage them to rest it (by sleeping!) later on.

🐶 Make a den

If you haven't already, make a cosy, comfy and covered den for them to rest in. This will muffle the noises and dogs feel more secure when they can hide.

Given the night is tonight, rather than creating a whole new place, see if you can get something set up where they normally sleep.

Don't forget to close the curtains as well.

🐶 Turn up the tunes!

Music with a heavy beat is the best choice to disguise the firework noise. Opt for something like African Drumming or Drum and Bass!

🐶 Fill up their Kong

If you haven't got a toy you can stuff with a tasty, sticky snack like peanut butter (make sure it's not sugar free so it doesn't contain Xylitol) or doggy paste, I would recommend you head out and get one!

Chewing and licking for a prolonged period will not only distract your dog, it is also a really relaxing activity for them and, again, will tire out their brains and help them to snooze once they are done.

🐶 Comfort them (but not too much!)

It is important that we reassure our dogs that everything is OK tonight but it is also
vital we don't over-do the cuddles and attention because we can easily make them think that we are scared as well and that will worry them more!

So if they are resting and chilled, give them the occasional pat but don't smother them.

If they are panting and stressed, sit with them and be a calming presence but try to communicate that you aren't worried and they shouldn't be either.

🐱Cats🐱

🐱 Lock the cat flap

Make sure your cat is in for the night well before dusk and lock the cat flap so they cannot get back out.

You will need to provide a litter tray if they normally toilet outside

🐱 Leave them be

Generally our cats are fairly sensible and if they are worried, they will hide away until it is all over. If yours does this, just let them carry on, and maybe provide a cosy blanket if they aren't somewhere soft!

🐰Rabbits and outdoor pets🐰

If you can bring the hutch into the garage for the night that can be helpful but for most small pets, covering their bedroom over with a nice thick blanket and making sure they have lots of bedding to hunker down in is enough to get them though the night.

I hope this helps your pets and you have a quiet (as possible!) night!

Little Rosie has been such a trouper these last few months .
Her lovely family were so sad when they received the news that Rosie had cancer and needed treatment .
However they quickly gathered themselves and headed off to Small Animal Hospital, University of Glasgow to start her chemotherapy..
Rosie has been amazing throughout and had her last doze of chemotherapy this week and is in remission! 😍❤️

Well done Rosie .. you are an absolute star ..
everyone at the practice is very very pleased and proud of you .
Enjoy your very pampered pooch weekend 😀 ###

With the warmer weather to last for a few more weeks , please be very careful with your fur kids.
Do not walk them in this heat as the risk of heat stroke is very high. Especially in the brachycephalic breeds such as bulldogs and pugs ..they can’t cool down effectively.
Walk early morning or later in the evening when it’s cooler.

BBQs also pose a risk … skewers can be stolen and eaten causing potentially fatal intestinal damage.
Undercooked food may cause severe gastrointestinal upsets
And corn on the Cobs can cause intestinal obstructions.
With all that said have fun and enjoy the good weather.

26/05/2023

Make sure your pets have access to fresh drinking water, good ventilation and shade from the sun at all times as the weather warms up. Contact a vet immediately if you have any concerns.

May you rest in peace Ma’am

Thank you for your life and service…..
