👉 Ensure your command is clear (use the dog’s name followed by the command).
👉 If the dog doesn’t listen, avoid repeating the command constantly.
👉 Give them a moment to process, then repeat the command (dog’s name + command).
👉 If they are still unsure, you might need to retrain the command using marking + reward.
👉 Use hand signals for commands whenever possible (dogs react quicker to hand signals than words).
👉 Be consistent with the commands you use.
👉 Never use the same command for two different tasks (e.g., “down” for lying down vs. “down” for getting off the couch).
👉 We want to set our dogs up for success by being clear.
👉 Remember, dogs don’t understand English, Japanese, French, etc., so we need to make it easy for them.

**Any tool can be dangerous if used incorrectly.**
This includes a lead and collar, harness, or electronic collar. All can cause harm if used improperly or with wrong intent.
When using a slip lead, we’re not applying excessive pressure. We start with the correct positioning, which is high up on the neck just below the chin.
We then add light pressure and reward with positive praise when they respond to that pressure. They then start to understand that pressure means “look at me” or “slow down,” etc.
It’s a great way to create a line of communication with our dogs. Over time, the pressure can be reduced to the slightest touch for the dogs to react.
