Barking Mad Dog Rescue is a UK charity 1160985 supporting abandoned dogs in Romania Street dogs, though numerous, are usually people friendly and trusting.
Romania, the EU's most recent member, has a huge stray dog problem after communist policies forced the uprooting of many communities from countryside to town. Until 2013 the way this had been addressed was for local charities to spay and neuter where they could, and return dogs to the streets or seek adoptive homes for them. In many places dogs were largely tolerated, and many people fed groups o
f 'their' dogs on the streets local to them. Pressure from the EU to control numbers, the sad death of a small boy, allegedly from a dog attack, and pressure from extremist groups whipping up anti-dog sentiment, then led to the passing of a draconian law in 2013. Dogs are rounded up and taken to government 'shelters'. The shelters are can be the worst internment camps. Often filthy, cold and dark, in some cities dogs are crammed in to pens and not well fed . It is always the worst quality dog food. After 14 days the dogs are euthanised. Things are slowly improving, not least to the publicity through social media of the worst perpetrators and offences. Sadly though, abandonment is endemic. Barking Mad Dog Rescue has its own shelter in Constanta district with a dedicated hands on team working there tirelessly for the 300+ dogs who are cared for there. We also have a supported shelter in Calarasi with another 120 dogs. We also buy food for 100 more dogs in a private shelters elsewhere in Constanta. This is a hoarding situation where we are powerless to intervene as there is no back up from the local authority or police to hold the owner responsible. Here's the very old lad of the three you sent money for last week. Thank you. He is 15 or older 😞
He was safe in someone's garden, having been dumped on the street. It looked like he had had some sort of vestibular incident. He's eating though now. He's with Ion at the shelter.
Another old soul who will know love and care for however long he has left. ❤️

DOG OF THE MONTH
Minnie
Location: Norfolk
Minnie is currently fostered in Norfolk but she really needs to find her forever home. Her foster mum ADORES Minnie but says that the gang of big dogs Minnie lives with are too much for her. After all, Minnie is not very big so we need to get her into a home.
Minnie is seeking a rural or quietish home location, with another friendly dog where she can continue to enjoy her walks in the woods and fields.

Remember the poorly boy we took in a few weeks ago? He's someone's dog but had stopped eating and was very weak.
He's ready to go home, with a wet nose and a shiny coat. He's so going to miss Ion - Ion cooked for him every single day. We did ask if he would be chained, but no, he lives freely. His job is to look after two cows. Gea said he's definitely a good guard dog as he wanted to chase her out the shelter. 😁

Santa came early!
Thank you so very much. Our simparica is here. Every dog in the shelter will be treated next week. It's by far the most effective treatment we can give them.

There were thirteen females spayed yesterday. It was a really hard day for Gea, Ion and the vet.
Dogs with owners, village dogs and a couple of our adolescent females, too, were all sterilised.
This is the only way forward. 💪🏼

Thank you for enabling us to get this poor dog to safety. There was no easy way to catch her without further trauma as she was terrified.
She was in someone's garden, a caring person, but the neighbour was really awful to her through the fence.
She's with us now. She's groggy but safe. Phew.

***TRAVELLIN' DAWGS!***
Three lucky pups left the village house yesterday for the next stage in their life journey. It's always bittersweet as living with Aura is such a good place to be. Spaces created mean more lives can be saved.
AMORE came to us from a kind man in Constanta. He rescued her from the street when she was tiny, alongside LAYLA, who's also travelling to the UK.
EVIE is en route to Germany. We took her in April from Dan's place.
Have a fab life, you lucky girls. We love you. Thank you, Aura, for letting them go. Like so many others, this is tough for you. ❤️

So this last week has been a full one.
As you've seen, Gea and Ion have been out and about with Ion helping dogs in the vicinity, after calls from lots of different people.
Gea also went to treat one of these four tiny puppies that belong to a family in the village. All OK so far. They will stay with their family.
Thank you for your unstinting help and love in all of this. 🥰
We need some more help, too, to name the first four kitties who need homes. These are from those left in a box at the vets. The first two are boys and the second two are girls. We don't know much about cat adoption, but our friend Oana does, so we hope she can guide us through what we need to do.

Gea had two separate messages from kind local people about this older guy in the street. (Not Ion!)
He's full of demodex. Ion went to give him treatment and something to eat. He's on our radar now.
Our village has so many lovely people, warm-hearted, kind people who want to do the best for the dogs and now can turn to BMDR.
If you follow Romanian rescues on FB, it's easy to think that the whole country is a horror story for animals. And it can be, but if people have support and someone to turn to, together they can make changes.
We're so lucky to have so many good local people on our side. 💪🏼♥️

Max, 6 - 7 years. For long term foster or adoption.
Max is our tiny ninja dog! He came to foster last year as an only dog but was quite guardy in the home. This was our fault as he would have been more comforable with a canine pal.
Once he knows you, he really loves you but needs a rescue experienced home where someone can help him grow more confident with strangers. Max is fostered with our super fostermum Lynn and her adopted gang but needs to find somewhere with another one or two calm dogs to lean on and learn from.

Here I am! There are plenty friends, a comfy bed and good food. My tummy is gurgling though, as they sneaked me a pill to clean the nasty things out.

News from Ion right now.
He was on his way home from fishing this eve. He stopped as he saw this pup on the road. Ion put that food and water down to bring the pup closer.
A man stopped to say there were four dumped there. Three have already been killed on the road 😭😭
He's got the puppy home safe with him now. It's a boy. Romania can break your heart in a thousand pieces sometimes.

What Katy did next...
Can you believe I have been here for 8 weeks now? So much has happened in that time. When I arrived, everything was so new that I found it hard to relax, but now Auntie Rosemary says my true personality is coming out.
I am still scared of the vet lady who Kenzo seems to love, but personally, I don’t trust her! Aside from that I’m not scared of much! I don’t stress about trains or lorries or ambulances anymore, nor the hairdryer, carpet shampooer, or vacuum cleaner. I’m definitely not scared of Kenzo, even though he was VERY grumpy when I first came. Now he washes my face and lets me go everywhere with him. I’m hoping that when I find a forever home, I might even be able to see him sometimes, although I would be happy to make doggie or feline friends in a new home, too.
Oh, and I definitely want a special person who gives great cuddles, as I never turn down an opportunity for those!

And another!
This morning brought a call for help from the City Hall. Neighbours could hear barking from a flat in a nearby village. They couldn't get a reply. This little dog's owner was lying unconscious and was rushed to hospital.
Ion took this lost soul to the shelter, but it was too much for her, so he brought her to the house. (Bear in mind we absolutely promised Aura that there would be no new dogs for a while. It gets so barky. This is hard on her keeping the neighbours onside, too.)
We're not yet sure if she'll go back to her owner. Plus, none of the neighbours had ever seen the dog outside. 😳
We'll see. We hope the owner will recover no matter what.

What a change in these two! Our scared, baldy puppy is growing both confidence and hair! And Sienna is healing. She's no longer snappy - quite the opposite. What a beauty 😍

Courageous kitten
These are some of our littles and oldies at the house. Most live here permanently. Watch Yakari. She's the bigger, old white girl at the back. She came from the public shelter some years ago and has stayed in the background for most of these. Six or seven years on, she's thinking that maybe Gea is OK too! Of course, Yakari loves Aura, her caregiver, with all her heart.
As Sienna heals, she's so much happier. Small steps daily, but we're delighted and so relieved for her. ❤️

The village house
The village house is where our smalls and oldies live. It’s a place of peace and tranquility as you can see! 😂 Life at the village house is definitely fun. 🐾❤️
