WARNING - LONG POST!
Why do most of my walks occur on the common?
There is a very limited number of locations where it is feasible to walk 5/6 dogs at any one time off lead for an hour. Many spaces are small or it would not be possible to reach with multiple dogs walking along small busy paths.
While the beach may appear as a good location, it is a very busy place to meet other people and their dogs. Attempting to walk multiple dogs would result in the majority being kept on lead and only allowing a couple off at any one time as it would be extremely challenging to keep them together and consider the general public. Some of your dogs will head off to meet other dogs while some would prefer to meet other humans, however, the problem occurs when these meetings could be with positive OR negative intent. Imagine having one dog running off to be super friendly with a human, another dog follows to be unfriendly to that human, while another dog goes to be super friendly to that human's dog, while another dog wants to challenge that dog to a fight! This is the reality of being a professional dog walker.
Unfortunately, many of your dogs have behavioral, training and/or health issues which must be navigated without harm being caused to, or even by, your dogs. I do not know the character of dogs outside my groups and the likelihood of issues occurring with your dogs. However, I am well aware of YOUR dogs' behaviors, and (you may not like this statement) who they are most likely to start a fight with, and in which situation...
Furthermore, this risk of confrontation by ignorant people even at the best of times is also extremely high. I have been shouted at by people for dogs simply standing near them, and even worse, last year the dogs and I were threatened and intimidated by a landowner in possession of a gun for using a public footpath on his land which I had been using without issue, and always with the utmost respect, for over 10 years...
Walking a group of dogs means considering the group as a whole and ensuring they all get what THEY need. This is why the common is the most common place for professional to walk your dogs. This large space allows us to give your dogs a good amount of exercise, allow them to be off lead as much as possible, while giving the public their space too.
Unfortunately, the alternative would be to reduce the number of dogs right down to 2/3 at a time, increase the number of walks I provide to compensate, have significantly less availability at the prime middle-of-the-day period that most people want, and hike my prices dramatically to cover the increase in wear and tear on driving around, and even more so, myself! The going rate for walking one dog in this area is now around £14...
While humans are primarily a visual species, dogs rely on scent. The common may appear to you as the same place, but to dogs they will find and enjoy an abundance of smells, have the ability to roam off lead more, have more space to play, and allows me to limit meeting other people and their dogs. Dogs typically do not care where they get walked, it is the humans with the issues.
Ultimately, dog walks need to happen based on the dogs I am provided with, and sometimes where they live in my catchment area. If you want your dogs to have a good length walk, and at a reasonable price, then this must be how I operate.
