Some underwater footage from @aquapawsuk today 💦 I love integrating hydrotherapy into most physiotherapy plans where appropriate and understanding how they feel on land vs in the water! It’s a great muscle strengthening and joint maintenance tool 💪🏼🦴 Come down and see us at AquaPaws for hydrotherapy if you’re interested! 🐶
A little video from recently of the lovely Barney doing his pole work exercises 🐕
After struggling with his agility and finding out he had a minor hip condition Barney is slowly working his way back up to doing some agility, starting with the fundamentals 💪🏼
Alongside hydrotherapy we aim to keep Barney comfortable and get him back to enjoying his agility soon 🥰

It’s been a little while since we’ve done a before and after!
So here is a lovely chocolate lab I had the pleasure of treating after she had surgery to treat a ruptured cruciate ligament 🤕
The first video is immediately post surgery where she really didn’t want to put weight on her leg 😓
She was prescribed with a course of:
• Cold therapy and Range of Motion
• Laser therapy
• At home physiotherapy exercise programme
• Progressive under water treadmill hydrotherapy sessions
After this course of treatment across 10 weeks at Farnham Veterinary Hospital, we see the lovely happy lab in the last video 😄
Physiotherapy is always slow and progressive post surgery and you need to stick with it, but it has some amazing outcomes for our four legged friends and overall can help improve the prognosis for our animals post surgery 🌟
With the summer competition season getting underway, sponsored horse Buddy benefited from a full assessment prior to his maintenance treatment last week 🐴☀️
Alongside a full static and dynamic assessment this little video gives an idea of what a palpation and range of motion assessment looks like; with some scratches in his favourite spot for good measure 😊
Your physio should always carry out a full assessment prior to treatment to gain the best understanding possible of what your horse needs from their physiotherapy session.
Please do send me a message on Facebook or via the contact details below to organise a session!

More feline hydrotherapy today with Aslan in the treadmill, treating his luxating patella’s by strengthening those hind limbs 🐈😄
This is the lovely Ivy who is on the mend after a road traffic accident meant she had to have major hip surgery with our amazing team at Farnham Vet Hospital 🌟
Ivy suffered with nerve damage in her back leg due to the accident so hydrotherapy is helping her to develop muscle and encourage her to use her back leg again 💪🏻
She is out there proving to all the cats that water isn’t so bad and hydrotherapy definitely isn’t just for dogs! 🐱
Even Bo needed some Monday Motivation for his paddle today… 🎣🦴🤣
Buttons doesn’t understand why we don’t like Monday’s… 🤷🏻♀️😴😌
Wouldn’t it be nice if all Mondays started with a massage… 💭 but for those of you who didn’t start your day like Buttons (the majority of us I’m sure), I hope you have still managed to put your best foot forward into this week!
Here’s to another jam packed week of fulfilling work treating all your lovely animals 😄🐶🐴
Feeling very jealous of the lovely Ellie in the treadmill at the moment with this weather ☀️
Make sure you all keep cool in this heat and if you choose to exercise your dog, make sure it’s early in the morning or late at night and avoid any exuberant exercise to keep your dog’s nice and cool and hydrated 😄💦
Tarras says “what‘s the next party trick you’d like me to do today?” 🐶🧸
Well, today we’re finding creative ideas to incorporate our physiotherapy exercises into home life! Tarras is demonstrating how we have found different places for our pole work to encourage some different stride lengths to get her thinking about her paw placement 🐾
There are so many unique ways we can challenge our dogs to keep physio exercises interesting and to progress them further 💪🏻 keep your eyes peeled for more ideas from Tarras!
Have you ever considered your horse’s tail carriage when they move? 🤔
Looking at our horse’s tail is something we very rarely do, usually as we’re so concerned about the way the limbs are moving or because we’re leading our horse ourselves!
Getting someone to walk/trot your horse up for you or videoing them every now and then is really beneficial to see all angles of your horse and the way they carry themselves, including their tail carriage.
When we are looking at the way our horse’s tail sits, it should sit centrally between the hamstring muscles with no obvious deviation. Sometimes however the tail can be held off to one side, or upwards, and this can indicate a potential compensatory issue. This should not be mistaken for swishing of the tail however.
The video below demonstrates how the tail can sometimes be held off to one side ➡️
In this case, the horse in the video had discomfort in the left hind limb flexor tendon (superficial) with some swelling and heat. This caused him to shift his weight to the right hind limb, using his tail to help him shift his weight. After some ultrasound therapy to reduce the acute swelling, he was then back to normal with a regular central tail carriage.
This is just one example of how our horse’s can use their tails. Other examples include:
• Tension in the hamstring and gluteal muscles on one side, causing the tail to deviate due to soft tissue restrictions.
• Stringhalt, a condition which causes our horse to lift their tail when backing up.
• Trauma, which has caused deviation of the tail and occurs after an incident
In all of these cases it is important to consult your veterinarian first, especially if an abnormal tail carriage is accompanied by other symptoms.
After permission to treat is gained physiotherapy is then very beneficial to help treat your horse, understanding why tail carriage is abnormal and correcting it to improve your horses balance, comfort and way of going!

Hydrotherapy 💦
What? How? Why? Who?
🔹 What is hydrotherapy?
Hydrotherapy is controlled water therapy involving swimming in a pool or walking on a water treadmill. It is utilised as a therapy to treat lots of different conditions and aid fitness in our dogs. It is often used as part of a multi-modal approach to help reach the goals we set for your dog!
🔹 How does it work?
Water has lots of properties which make it therapeutic for our dogs. When moving their limbs through the water they work against resistance requiring more exertion from their muscles. The water used in hydrotherapy is warmed to up to 30°, this nice warm temperature helps reduce tension in muscle fibres, increase circulation to soft tissues and reduce pain and discomfort around the joints to get the best possible movement from our dog. Bouyancy helps to keep our dogs afloat which reduces the weight they carry on their limbs, which can be varied in the treadmill. In the treadmill water height can also be tailored to target certain muscles and joints.
🔹 Why would my dog need hydrotherapy?
Your dog may need hydrotherapy for multiple reasons, these include but are not limited to: To improve or maintain muscle mass, improve joint health and mobility, get back to fitness post surgery, lose weight, treat a condition which cannot be treated with surgery, learn to swim and have fun!
🔹 Who is it for?
If your dog is need of hydrotherapy for any of the above reasons, then it’s for them! This more specifically includes dogs who have conditions requiring improved muscle build such as hip dysplasia or cruciate ligament disease or dogs who have lost muscle due to crate rest after surgery, dogs who need to lose weight to reduce the stress on their joints, dogs with osteoarthritis to improve fitness and joint health, dogs who needs additional fitness for competition and mental well-being, and many others.
Water treadmill is available at Farnham Veterinary Hospital. For any other queries plea
Lovely Tarras in the treadmill today being a model patient 🥰
Tarras suffers from cruciate ligament deterioration and osteoarthritis in her stifle (knee) joints, and tarsal (ankle) joints, due to her old age (she’s 13 believe it or not! 😱)
Tarras has a multimodal approach to treatment receiving:
💦 Hydrotherapy for muscle strengthening and maintenance
🚨 Laser therapy to help improve joint health
💆🏻♀️ Heat and massage therapy to reduce secondary spinal muscle pain and tension
🐕 Home exercises including pole work, weight shifting and slow lead walking
💉 Medicinal therapy in the form of Librela, a relatively new injection given monthly to reduce the pain associated with osteoarthritis and help improve comfort and mobility

Happy Easter Everyone! 🐣💐🐶🐴
Myself and all of the horses today definitely enjoyed some physio in the spring sun ☀️
Darcy particularly enjoyed his session and a good snooze during heat, laser and massage therapy 🥱
The heat from the sun works as a great little warm up for the muscles pre massage, but although the weather is getting warmer don’t forget to properly warm up your horses before work! Coming into spring treat them as though you would in the winter still, as external heat from the sun does not mean the muscles are warmed properly prior to exercise. Use some gentle heat therapy or slow walking before really getting them into their exercise to reduce the risk of injury❗️

The gorgeous Coco having a mid massage snooze 😴
As many of our horses are working animals, a build up of muscle tension is very common. But this can lead to pain and reduce performance ability. By loosening up these muscles with some massage therapy it will keep your horse happy and allow them to work to their best ability! 💪🏻
During your physio session don’t hesitate to ask me for some pointers on how to carry out some basic massage techniques. You can use these between sessions to keep your horses muscles nice and supple!
If you feel your horse would benefit from some remedial or maintenance massage please don’t hesitate to contact me on messenger or at:
