I am very proud of the fact that we provide EFL services to young people in Alternative Education .
Our horses, sheep and dogs, plus the environment of our beautiful site, contribute enormously to their mental and physical wellbeing.
Therefore, providing a safe space where learning is achieved 🫶🏻🐴

In case you missed it..... Horse & Hound recently published our letter in response to their brilliant article about EAS. This is what our Chair Ed had to say...

I was delighted to read your recent article highlighting the excellent psychotherapy work being done by Mike Delaney. This is really important work, delivering meaningful outcomes and reducing pressure on other parts of the health and social care services; there is increasing evidence and research being done to demonstrate this.

We created the Equine Assisted Services Partnership (EASP) to promote the wider EAS sector and support good standards. It’s important, therefore, that we all recognise the breadth of EAS in the UK and remember that it reaches much further than psychotherapy and counselling. Our sector includes many providers who do work to address clients’ physical issues as well as this providing a blended therapy and education offering. For example, there are many specially qualified physiotherapists (hippotherapists) providing really important work for a range of physical disabilities needs. There is also an increase on Equine Assisted Learning being (EAL) offered as an alternative education provision where SEND children struggle with mainstream school. Many EAL providers are registered as an alternative education provider as part of the Local Authority ‘local offer’. RDA has, of course, been involved in this work for years and other bigger organisations (like BHS with their "Changing Lives" programme) are doing important work. But there are also many small organisations and individuals making a very positive difference to people's lives in a wide variety of ways.

We are delighted to see our sector grow in size and prominence and this work is a core part of keeping horses relevant to wider society. Our register of providers ensures that each participant and equine is at the heart of the service and that they are kept safe and well cared for. However, it also offers us a chance to champion and celebrate the amazing work done by many people, across a whole range of modalities – ridden, ground work, physical and psychosocial. The sector is complex in the way that services are provided and commissioned and EASP is here to help everyone navigate that landscape.

Yours sincerely

Ed Bracher OBE
Chair, The Equine Assisted Services Partnership

This Remembrance Sunday, we honour not only the brave men and women who served but also the millions of horses, ponies, donkeys, and mules who stood by their side.

These incredible animals carried heavy loads, transported supplies, and served tirelessly alongside our armed forces, often in the harshest of conditions. Their courage, resilience, and loyalty made an enormous impact and saved countless lives.

Today, we remember them all and give thanks for their service. May we never forget the sacrifices made by both humans and animals in the pursuit of peace 🐴❤️

Horses have a natural ability to make people smile for many reasons! Here are a few that might resonate with you:

⭐Horses are known for their elegance and powerful movements, which can be mesmerizing to watch, whether they're galloping across a field or just standing peacefully. Their sheer presence often stirs awe and admiration.
⭐Interacting with or simply being around horses connects us to nature in a calming, grounding way.
⭐Horses are known for their ability to form deep emotional connections with humans. Their sensitivity to human emotions can create moments of companionship that feel special and joyful.
⭐The presence of horses has been used in therapy for their calming and healing effects. Being near a horse, grooming, or riding one can produce feelings of relaxation and joy.

Next time you ride, remember this poem by Spike Milligan and we defy you not to smile!

Smiling is infectious,
You catch it like the flu,
When someone smiled at me today,
I started smiling too.

I passed around the corner,
And someone saw me grin,
When he smiled I realised,
I’d passed it on to him.

I thought about that smile,
Then realised it’s worth,
A single smile just like mine,
Could travel round the earth.

So if you feel a smile begin,
Don’t leave it undetected,
Let’s start an epidemic quick,
And get the world infected.

HORSES CAN RECOGNISE THEIR KEEPERS FROM PHOTOGRAPHS

Research has found that horses presented with photos of humans can recognise their keepers at a rate much better than chance.

Ethologist Léa Lansade of the French National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and Environment, conducted an experiment to find out how well horses can recognise individuals from photographs. Their results showed that horses can remember a keeper’s face even six months after having seen the person.

The research team used two computer screens to display a random selection of unfamiliar human faces. 11 three-year-old Welsh mares were trained to choose between two side by side images by pressing the touchscreen with their nose, then being given a food reward. Then over a course of 32 sessions, the team started to introduce photos of the horses' handlers into the selection of unfamiliar faces.

The researchers found that the horses correctly identified their current keeper and ignored the unfamiliar faces about 75% of the time – a rate significantly better than chance. The horses also selected photos of previous keepers – people they hadn’t seen in six months.

These results are surprising for several reasons. They suggest that horses can understand that photographs – two-dimensional images – represent real people, without being given any other cues like voice, behaviour or scent. They actually performed better at this task than dogs have done in previous research.

The findings also suggest that horses form emotional attachments to their human keepers and have advanced facial recognition abilities. On an ethological level this would be very important as of course they would need to learn who to trust so they could alter their behaviour accordingly – knowing who to avoid or who they can approach safely. Of course these results also show that horses have a good long-term memory for human faces.

Study: Lansade, L., Colson, V., Parias, C. et al. Female horses spontaneously identify a photograph of their keeper, last seen six months previously. Sci Rep 10, 6302 (2020).
