JB Dog Training Force Free Training using positive reinforcement techniques and 1-2-1 dog walking After several years working in the ski travel industry, along came Douglas.

Having grown up loving and living with dogs it was always a dream to have a dog of my own. He was not the easiest puppy to handle and the research and training I did for him fuelled the passion to work with other dogs and their owners. I have completed my Level 3 accreditation in Learning, Motivation and Reinforcement, and practical Instructors course with the Institute of Modern Dog Trainers (IMD

T). During this time I have worked as a dog walker, sitter and boarder to gain experience with lots of wonderful dogs! My training encompasses positive reinforcement techniques and entirely force free methods, ensuring the dogs needs and interests are at the forefront to maximise their potential and have fun whilst doing it! I am always eager to continue my understanding of how dog learn and how we can harness their qualities to live happy lives together.

THE PERILS OF PUNISHMENT

It’s easy to stop or suppress a behaviour by using punishment, force or pain and say that it really works, so why even bother to do it differently?

Punishment based methods may well “fix” the behaviour quickly, are far easier, require far less effort, less knowledge, less education, or even just be based on traditional belief, but these methods come at a great cost - destroying trust, creating insecurity, fear, anxiety, provoking aggression, causing dogs to shut down or feel helpless and prevent dogs from learning an alternative, more acceptable behaviour.

There is so much modern, scientific evidence to support force free, positive reinforcement methods as being the most effective and successful way to modify behaviour.

There is nothing admirable, ethical or intelligent in physically or emotionally forcing any sentient being to comply.

Take the time and make a commitment to understand and learn about positive, force free, science-based methods.

🎃 ITS SPOOKY SEASON 🎃

This might be great fun for kids (and grown up kids) but with the darker evenings and lots of people out and about in fancy dress, our dogs could genuinely be very spooked! Not to mention all the potential strangers in costumes knocking at your door!

🎆 Remember you also have possible fireworks for Diwali to contend with!

Keep your dogs safe tonight, you might want to skip your evening walk, stay home with them, comfort them, and put some management in place to avoid creating a fear inducing situation for them!

Remember to keep your training at your dogs pace, if they ever try to escape the muzzle or seem uncomfortable go back to whichever previous step they are comfortable with.

1️⃣ The number one rule when working on resource guarding is PREVENTION is key.

🙅‍♀️ Never give your dog a reason to feel they need to guard something from you.

🍝 Think about if you were out at a nice restaurant, and the waiter started interfering and messing with your meal - you would probably tell him where to go!

🐾 It’s the same for our dogs, they shouldn’t need to protect their food so dont give them a reason to.

This is often where people struggle with reactivity training, and can often make reactivity worse when trying to train at a distance your dog cannot cope with.

Counter conditioning and desensitisation will only work if you allow enough space for your dog to process the environment allowing them the capacity to learn.

Yes there will be unavoidable times when you’re dog goes over threshhold, but the more you can practice at a safe distance, the easier your training will get and the more progress you will see!

If you need help with a training plan for reactivity book in a free consultation call and we can discuss things further 🐾

We all know food is a brilliant tool when training our dogs but we need to make sure we know how to use it effectively! If not it can be :

➡️ Frustrating
➡️ Confusing
➡️ Sometimes even punishing

🧑‍💻 I’m going to get a bit nerdy and technical on you now. One thing I always ask in a training or behaviour consultation is ‘what have you tried already’? Often the answer is ‘positive reinforcement’ but this phrase is often misused.

🐾 This has become a general term used to describe a modern and ethical style of dog training but if you actually understand what the words mean, it will help you understand how to apply the training correctly!

Positive reinforcement can be used to :
➡️ Teach new behaviours
➡️ Maintain existing behaviours
➡️ Improve efficiency

🐾 I’ve had a lot of people ask me recently about how to stop jumping up!

💭 As with all unwanted behaviours, prevention is key! But we also need to look at the motivation and reinforcement behind it.

🐶 Another big challenge with training for jumping up is frustration, hence training with food can often be irrelevant, or even punishing in this scenario.

When dogs are off lead they have a lot more freedom and choice. This is great, however, it’s up to us to help and guide them to make the right choices!

Your dog isn’t being stubborn or not listening to you if they don’t come back, they are simply choosing the better option - why not make coming back to us the better option?

In the meantime, we must be careful about where and how we train (or walk off lead) to prevent them from making the wrong choice.

If you’re struggling with recall get in touch through the link in my bio - recall masterclass will soon be up and running so watch this space!

There are many possible reasons for reactivity in our dogs :

➡️ Fear
➡️ Frustration
➡️ Pain
➡️ Overarousal
➡️ Unpredictability

What we do know is that your dog is having a tough time. It’s up to us to learn to read them, understand what triggers them, and work out a plan of action to make them feel more comfortable.
