Gilbertson & Page UK-made dog food has been a favourite of pet owners for 150 years Gilbertson & Page was founded in 1873.

A holder of two Royal Warrants, it’s first was received in 1884 from Queen Victoria. Today, the company is still in private, family ownership and operates from Welwyn Garden City in Hertfordshire. All Gilbertson & Page’s pet foods are developed and produced in-house at Welwyn. Over the course of time, the underlying principles that guide the business haven’t really changed and Gilbertson & Page re

mains wedded to the simplicity of crafting highly-nutritious pet feeds and staying close to customers. Two things probably highlight the contrast with the big brands. Firstly, there’s very little in the way of advertising, with the Company preferring to attend and sponsor lots of national and local events (for example, Gilbertson & Page have been the International Sheep Dog Society’s principal sponsor for many years). Secondly, in its 140 year history, the production facilities have moved a grand total of … 6 miles! That ‘local manufacturing’ approach is important. It has allowed skills to develop over many years and for Gilbertson and Page to establish a very strong relationship with suppliers. It also makes the Company one of a relatively small number of pet feeds suppliers that still manufactures its products in the UK. This notion of “we make our own” is something that pet owners and animal professionals increasingly value. Of course, the science behind animal feeds has advanced enormously over even the past 50 years and, today, Gilbertson & Page is probably best known for its ability to formulate foods, especially for dogs, that address energy, life-stage and health issues – and to offer these ranges at very competitive prices (remember that lack of advertising I mentioned). As a mark of its innovation credentials, Gilbertson & Page launched their Valu-Mix dry dog food in 1975, almost single-handedly creating the market for dry feeds, and they’ve just built a new product testing and development lab! Puppies need to grow and develop before they’re able to enjoy a good walk. In the early stages of development, their physical abilities are limited so it’s important not to expect too much early on.

During those first months, as their bones are growing, the growth plates within the bones, which allow them to lengthen as the dog gets larger, stay soft and can be vulnerable to injury which can lead to longer term problems as an adult dog. The rest of the puppy’s bones are softer too and alongside the rest of their muscular system (joints, ligaments, tendons etc) can be open to injury caused by over-exercising your puppy or from the wrong kind of exercise or play.

However, exercise is still important for a puppy both physically and mentally supporting their development, using up their energy, developing their bond with you and allowing them to discover the world outside through exploration, sight, sniffing and learning.

The Kennel Club recommends walks of 5 minutes per every month of their age up to twice a per day. So, at four months, your puppy would have a maximum of 20 minutes twice a day.

Preparation for walks with puppies is important, extreme temperatures can affect them more than adults, so planning is key. Pups shouldn’t be walked straight after their meals, giving them time to digest their food will help. Watch for signs that you’ve gone far enough, reluctance to keep going, sitting down often or excessive panting are all indications you’ve gone far enough.

Playtime at home counts as well, giving your pup the opportunity to run around and play under their own steam and stop when they want. Games can also be important for building trust and a good relationship as well as introducing instructions and training in a fun way, so keeping a fun session in each day is ideal.

The chill in the air is becoming more noticeable, and just like us, not every dog is a fan of the cold, the rain, or the snow! However, all dogs need their daily walks to stay fit and healthy. Here are some tips to encourage those dogs who might be a bit hesitant to head outdoors:

🧥 A good coat can make all the difference, keeping your dog warm, protected from the elements and visible but without restricting movement or vision is best.
📝 Plan the walk before mealtimes, for some dogs this then becomes part of the dinner routine and encourages them out.
🏞️Try out new routes, it’s tempting to keep to just paths and pavements in the winter time to prevent excess mud coming home but varying the walk can make it more interesting to your dog each time.
🐕 Find places your dog can be safely let off lead to explore on their own terms. For some dogs there just isn’t enough time to investigate every smell or play with other dogs, so these safe open areas are a great place to allow these behaviours.
🐶Lastly training treats. Rewarding good behaviour on walks can help with training as well as increase your dog’s enjoyment in the walk.
🐾For some dogs though, reluctance to go out and walk may be due to pain / difficulty walking or bad experiences, so always take veterinary advice if you suspect any of these.

“The picture is just for reference and because I think he’s gorgeous. He is called Trevor.

He was hand reared due to his mother being ill. I’ve had him now from 12 weeks for a year and I have struggled with his eating terribly with allergies, upset stomach, fur loss, ear infections to name a few.

I have tried every dog food and he was getting worse, costing thousands in vet fees. I popped into a pet warehouse as my boy needed a new lead and got talking to the guy who owned it. I mentioned my pup and his issues he gave me a 5kg bag free of Titanium as he was so confident it would “fix” my boy.

It has worked wonders. His ears are clean, his fur is fantastic, he’s gained much needed weight. I can’t thank you enough.

My boy is a Dogue de Bordeaux so needs a good food. I have recommended this to everyone I know and the pet warehouse have run out now and are waiting for a new supply. I have gone from spending £100+ on food per month to £30 – £40 (including a wet food for mixing) amazing stuff thank you.”

Oats are a great ingredient for dogs. Their biggest benefit is the rich levels of dietary fibre in oats which aids digestion and hunger management in hungrier dogs. The beta glucan part to the fibre can help to control blood sugar levels and improve digestibility of other nutrients as well. Oats are a good source of vitamins and minerals, they bring in B vitamins (pantothenic acid and folate), vitamin E as well as minerals, magnesium, potassium, selenium, zinc, iron, zinc and manganese. The fat in oats is healthy too, they are full of linoleic acid, a type of omega-6 fatty acid that benefits skin and coat in dogs. Oats are a hypoallergenic ingredient and gluten-free, so a great ingredient for dogs with allergies to gluten or those with suspected sensitive stomachs or food intolerances. Lastly oats contain phytochemicals with anti-cancerous benefits which can reduce cancer risk and slow tumour growth in certain types of cancers as well.

Salmon is a healthy ingredient for dogs to eat and contains a good level of protein and beneficial fats. Salmon oil alone can provide a concentrated source of essential fatty acids. Rich in omega 3’s; docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) which studies indicate can help with joint inflammation, improve cognitive function, help keep coats shiny and support immunity and general health.

Aside from the usual dog shows and historic houses this summer, there are some more unusual places where your dog is welcome to accompany you. Day trips can be a great way to take advantage of the longer days and summer weather, for instance, you could try one of the following: * Visit a wildlife park or zoo. * Enjoy a scenic steam train journey. * Boat trips, from leisurely river cruises. * Try a doggie afternoon tea. * Take your dog with you to the theme park. * Lastly, how about a cable car ride?

We are delighted to share this wonderful story of Barney, currently 16 years old, who will be 17 this summer! He is the son of ‘Pacolito Funky Monkey’, a Parson Terrier who was a prizewinner at Crufts 2006 & 2007. Barney was born August 2007. Here is Barney skipping through the woods & over tree roots showing his determined character. At his age he chooses his moments for action but still enjoys a bit of black-run style leaping!
