Beginners coached canicross course

In January we will be launching

‘Pooch to canicross’ an 8 week fully coached beginners canicross course ran by myself and canicross coach Lisa. (Starting 11/01/2023 - Gloucestershire based)

Our courses are designed to increase confidence, have fun and build a bond , whilst equipping you with the knowledge and expertise to safely hit the trails like a pro!

We welcome owners of all abilities and dogs from 1yr+

With the help of two qualified canicross coaches Hannah & Lisa, each session we will look at a new skill, to level up you and your dog working towards building a new canicross partnership.

💟 Top tips for Halloween 🎃👻

🕷🕷Halloween🕷🕷

🕷With halloween fast approaching please consider thinking how your puppy may feel when faced with different decorations appearing in your home or family members that may be heading out for trick or treating wearing very different items, such as masks, hats and capes.

🕷Remember - if children or family members do decide to dress up for halloween it is likely that your puppy may not have seen these before and they may be unsure. As this real Puppy School photo of a child which attended a Puppy School class demonstrates clearly is that children do look very different when disguised in halloween dress!

🕷Try to introduce items gradually and create a positive association by using treats and or a fun game with your puppy.

🕷Always watch your puppies body language and create a bigger distance away if they are unsure. Do not force them to move closer if they are scared.

🕷Keep a look out as we will be sharing some more tips on how to help keep your pups safe this Halloween over the next few days.

Head of Fundraising, Alison Jarvis, and Operations Manager, Nicky Spanswick, are getting ready to brave the rapids on the River Wye this Saturday, 24th September, to raise money for the vulnerable cats, dogs and small animals here at the Shelter.

The event is being organised by Cheltenham Running and Walking Club and will see a cluster of two-man kayaks traverse 9 miles of the river all in aid of Cheltenham Animal Shelter.

We need your support now more than ever with donations down and demand for our help soaring as families struggle to cope with their pets in the wake of the pandemic and facing the rising cost of living.

If you can, please make a donation to help the animals at the Shelter and encourage Alison and Nicky to stay afloat for the gruelling 9-mile race!

This summer we are looking forward to hosting our Animal Experience sessions again for young people aged 5-15. The sessions offer children a unique opportunity to learn about responsible pet ownership while assisting the team look after some of the rescue animals in our care. Sessions include cleaning the animal’s accommodation, a craft or enrichment-making activity, and animal interactions.

We only have limited spaces left on two of the sessions book now to avoid disappointment!

This is a great graphic from Positive Pet Behaviour. We can often label our dogs and it doesn’t always explain what is really going on for them and there can be a few reasons for their behaviour.

Set yourself and your dog up for success by stepping back and replace the word stubborn by understanding what they are trying to communicate to us, seeing things from their perspective and understand the reasons behind their behaviours. There’s usually a good reason. 🐶

Stubborn, belligerent, being a diva, lazy, trying to be the boss, difficult, naughty. These are all really harmful labels that gloss over or ignore the dogs physical and emotional needs. Our dogs are just not capable of trying to wind us up or make life difficult for us. There is always a reason for a refusal or unwillingness to whats being asked. As a canine guardian, this is the time to pause and consider what is missing. It's our job to protect and support our dogs not chastise them for our failings to provide them with the tools and support for their specific needs.
