Let’s talk “ REINFORCEMENT”
Whatever behaviour your dog is displaying, it is doing it because it is being reinforced at some point. Wether it’s a wanted or unwanted behaviour.
So think to yourself what behaviour is my dog displaying and then think why is it happening.
So for example if it’s barking at the window , the door, people, other dogs,
Is it pulling on the lead. Is it stealing things. Why why why. So then think of what’s being reinforced in the dogs eyes.
Dogs will do things because we allow it, they do things to better their own situation they do things if it is self rewarding. Think what the dog sees , what function it’s achieving.
During my lives I get lots of questions and most of the answers are so common sense it upsets people when I don’t beat about the bush with my answer. If you’re triggered by the answer then you’re part of the problem.
I’m open and honest I will say it how it is. I tell you want you need to hear not what you want to hear.
Someone on my live the other night asked “ HOW DO I STOP MY DOG GETTING INTO MY FRIDGE” my reply is that a serious question. Didn’t go down to well. But this is what dogs are having to deal with in the modern world. They are told never say no to a dog, never correct a dog. Tell me I’m wrong if you do have a look at the state dogs are in.
Let me ask you a question, if a child was opening the fridge, a closed cupboard with access to cleaning chemicals. What would you do….. . Would you go and ask on social media. Or use a common sense approach by putting locks on those cupboards, limit freedom to the items. But this is what as I’ve said in the past this is the crazy mixed up world we live in.
You want to know how to stop a behaviour which is unwanted it’s simple,,,,,
“ DONT ALLOW IT” “ LIMIT FREEDOM TO PRACTICE THE BEHAVIOUR”
and “ TRAIN DONT COMPLAIN” someone didn’t like my straight to the point answer the other night. So their boyfriend threate

We are fully licensed and insured. Fully enclosed spacious garden safety gates locked and secured to ensure fully enclosed area. They will spend their break with our own family dogs Ubba our spaniel and Machrie our Labrador pup.
We have young Ralph the podenco x in for a long weekend. This is his second visit to us and will be joining us again for 18 days at the end of the month.
I wanted to share this little post of Sky the little frenchie. She’s been staying with us while the owners are on holiday.
I first met her after her owners contacted us following a recommendation from a previous client. Little sky had a bite history following being put under undue pressure. The owners had a previous trainer who had gone out and they put a choke chain on her. Took her out her crate and yanked her into a fearful state. They then proceeded to yank her up and down the pathway outside. Using the same chain. After that little performance he then recommended an e collar. Now this is not a post bashing e collars or choke chains but to go straight away to these tools without actually understanding what this dogs issues where shows the complete lack of understanding.
All this little dog was saying was she wasn’t happy with people putting pressure on her and getting in her face. When we first met she barked the hell out of herself telling me she wasn’t happy. All we did was remove her from that situation. Until she was happy and then changed her emotional response. The last thing I would have done with a dog like a frenchie who has brachial issues is put a chain round her neck.
We worked with a little front clip harness which the owner was already using. We then worked on changing her emotional response and continue to advocate for her by not letting people put undue pressure on her. She doesn’t need to be stroked and fussed by everyone and anyone. That’s a human need not a dog need. But she is confident with us , she trusts us. We make it fun.

Real life
Sometimes a real life opportunity throws itself up in front of you. On our morning walk in the park these two geese were present probably resting on a long journey somewhere. My friends in the Gundog world when I first started my journey said every good Gundog should have a good heel/ loose lead, good stop and good recall. As I start to walk and Ubba our working cocker walks beside me as well as our 11 week old Labrador. I send him out on three occasions and put a stop on him using a whistle. Once I’ve completed the third stop I recall him back to me. However before getting to this stage it it’s important you put all the foundation work in place.
When the recall was complete all he got was a lot of fuss and affection.
Points to note , “NO E COLLAR, no screaming and shouting FENTON if you know you know,
No treats were harmed in the making of this video.
Good old fashion foundations and good training without the triggers present built this. As the foundations are built you start to add distractions and if it fails you go back a step to reinforce what you want.
The moral of the story is if you put the work in you will get real life results
10 weeks old Labrador retriever, smashing sh*t like a pro.
Morning walk with training
Another little video of Machrie’s progress, when putting the foundations in place all we want him to do is follow us about. We also break the walk up with a little bit of recall. Start as you mean to go on

Mantrailing progression & introduction
Saturday Mantrailing, progression and introduction why not join us on our next session.
Ever wonder why pet dogs are a mess. Here’s a prime example of someone who shouldn’t own a dog never mind be in charge of a child.
You can hear the giggling in the background. There is nothing funny about this in the slightest this is a tragedy waiting to happen.
Machrie 9 weeks old
Little Machrie now 9 weeks , laying the foundations early is important. He’s going to be a working gun dog so it’s important we start laying the basics. Steadiness, heel work, recall , whistle. We also introduce equipment he will wear later and it’s important we incorporate that through positive experience. He’s still a young puppy so 5 mins of training goes a long way. Once he attains the age of 6 months we start increasing the training. So it’s important those little seeds are planted now. He’s an absoloute little star.
Our resident boarder Hugo ( Vizsla) think he’s quite comfortable, trust me when I say this. He made his own bed. This is how I found him, the other two out for the count. All exercised , fed , trained, In Machrie’s case. Little Ubba his usual chilled out self for a working cocker.
Quiet at Ubba’s Home boarding
Our resident boarder Ralph , our 8 week old working Lab, our working cocker. All chilling, it’s peace and quiet
