Saltwood Animal Care and Training Working with dogs, horses, livestock, small animals and poultry in a welfare friendly and rewarding way. So she decided to do something about it!

offering all training and management help to pet and professional animal owners. Freya has always had a strong desire to work with animals, her first Saturday job was at her local stables in which she founded her love for horses. Little did she know, at the time she was recommended to use traditional methods of training which were deemed 'the norm' at that time. After School Freya studied various

animal management and welfare courses, finally gaining a Degree in Animal Welfare and Behaviour in 2008. From there she worked within the Animal Rescue sector, including Battersea Dogs and Cats Home and Behaviour Manager at Chancepixies Animal Rescue. It was here Freya realised the real plight of the companion animal and was awakened to the true animal welfare issues affecting our community. Identifying a distinct lack of understanding and compassion for the animals around us, she has set up the Pet Welfare and Education Enterprise, (PWEE) a small animal rescued aimed at supporting owners for the duration of their pets lives and offering much needed access to information and training to those unable to afford private tuition. She is a Director and co-owner of That Dog Place Ltd, a unique and modern dog training and daycare centre in Hythe. Freya also attends to private clients assisting them with their training and behaviour needs of all commonly kept domestic species.

Meet Reaper, been knocking on deaths door for a few days, however I think we're safe to introduce you now. Reaper didn't manage to get any colostrum off his mummy, it's been touch and go to get him eating and pooing properly but I think we got this now. I love being a mummy again, however I also discovered scours is a zoonotic disease and spent most of yesterday in the bathroom 🚽.

Poultry and other captive birds can be let outside from 2nd May 2022 unless you are within a 3 km Protection Zone. But there are some vital preparations you must make before you let your birds out. See our press notice for full details https://www.gov.uk/government/news/bird-flu-latest-situation-avian-influenza-prevention-zone-declared-across-great-britain

You can check if you fall within a 3 km Protection Zone by visiting our interactive map and entering your postcode. https://defra.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=8cb1883eda5547c6b91b5d5e6aeba90d

If you fall within a 3 km Protection Zone birds must remain housed.

Although the requirement to house your birds is ending for most keepers, the Avian Influenza Prevention Zone remains in place. This means you must continue to practise strong biosecurity, as there is still a risk your birds could catch . See our biosecurity guidehttps://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/1064069/biosecurity-poultry-guide.pdf

A little while ago, both these boys were fearful and reactive to other dogs, just look at them now!

When working with dog aggression, socialisation and fear based behaviours, it's super important you find yourself a QUALIFIED, EXPERIENCED AND WELFARE FRIENDLY trainer to help you and your dog. Negative handling techniques such as the use of choke chains, usually makes these issues worse!

If you are having aggression or socialisation issues, especially with LARGE BREED DOGS, please give me a message. Degree qualified since 2008 and lots and lots of references from owners and professional bodies, I also have a private training field to keep your dog safe and focused.

Give me a message to discuss your dogs training needs further. Limited spaces available on a Monday and Thursday.

⭐⭐ Forthcoming Changes to the UK Highway Code ⭐⭐

🐴 Those of us who regularly ride our horses on the roads in the UK will doubtless be familiar with advice presented in the Highway Code, which guides how road users are to behave. Following a lengthy public consultation process, the Government is shortly to make significant changes to the Highway Code that fundamentally affect the status of many road users, including horse riders, and of how they are to be treated in the eyes of the law.

🐴 For the first time the Highway Code will establish a specific ‘hierarchy of road users’ with an order of priority given as: pedestrians, cyclists, horse riders, cars, vans, large passenger vehicles and then heavy good vehicles. The aim being to ensure that those road users who can do the greatest harm have the greatest responsibility to reduce the danger or threat they might pose to others.

🐴 Specific changes affecting horse riders include establishing guidance on safe passing distances and speeds when overtaking horse riders. Specifically; when overtaking a horse rider (or horse drawn vehicle) you must give at least as much room as you would when overtaking a car. As a driver, you must also take extra care and give more space when overtaking horse riders or horse drawn vehicles in bad weather (including high winds) and at night.

🐴 Guidance when overtaking horse riders and horse drawn vehicles includes: leaving a minimum distance of 2 metres; passing at speeds under 15mph; and further, that one should wait behind a horse rider or horse drawn vehicle if it is not safe to overtake and not possible to meet the above guidance. Do not push through or past a horse; horses are sentient beings who can be unpredictable.

🐴 The Government website (https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/review-of-the-highway-code-to-improve-road-safety-for-cyclists-pedestrians-and-horse-riders) has a great deal more information on the changes, which make interesting reading and will hopefully make our roads safer for all.
