Wieland Forge I produce historical ironwork replicas based on archaeological finds. For orders, please contact on My name is Jason Green. I am a blacksmith and farrier.

I started my apprenticeship as a farrier back in 1987, training for 4 years before qualifying in 1991. In 2001 I decided to give up horse shoeing and enter the world of blacksmithing. It was all a bit overwhelming at first, learning different skills and running my own business. At first I went down the general ironwork route, making gates, railings and sculptural pieces. Shortly after, however, I

got into historical blacksmithing and haven;t looked back since. I am a member of Vikings of Middle England re-enactment society where I started making Viking age weapons and domestic wares. My main interests are in the early Saxon to late Norman periods, but I have made items from many other historical eras. I have made ironwork for films, TV, museums and castles. I have ironwork in Portland, Dover, Rockingham and Warwick castles. When away with Vikings of Middle England I also do demonstrations on early medieval blacksmithing. Using a charcoal forge and bellow I create knife blades, arrowheads, fire strikers and other items. If you would like some ironwork for living history or re-enactment, please contact me by phone (07773 636881) or email ([email protected]). I am also at some of the re-enactment markets (ILHF, TORM) so catch me there.

A commission for a 16thC Irish Sparth axe. A weapon used by the Gallowglass who were mercenaries from Northern England, Isle of Man and Scotland. A really broad axe related to the earlier Dane axe of the 10th-11th centuries. The are many variations of this axe and you can see its evolution as the blade get more upswept through time. Some are highly decorated with inlay work. This one has a blade width of 12" 30cm and is 5' 6" long in total but they can be longer. The shaft is ash.

A commission of 2 Goedendags. (Dutch for good day) A simple weapon used by militias in the 14thC in Flanders. It's basically a large club with an iron spike simple but affective. These are around 5ft long and 3" wide at the top tapering down to 1 3/4" at the bottom. The spike is 8" (Some originals are shorter) with a collar and disc to strengthen the top. These are made of Beech which is strong and light for its size.

A commission I did early this year was this socketed iron weaving sword. Its based on a find from a female grave on Westness, Rousay, Orkney. There's another example of the socketed weaving sword at Cruach moar, Islay. Both have the cranked socket. The sword is just over 24" (61cm) and is just over an inch wide. The original socket had trances of wood in it but I have no idea how long it was so I just made as I thought practical. Its made from antique iron so you can just see the grain and impurities in the blade. I just though it would look better in iron than clean modern steel.

Just bought myself another Blacker power hammer. This one was owned from new by the family of the previous owner, all blacksmiths. Mines worn out and had it's day. I was going to buy a new one but I like using these and it's easily repaired if it goes wrong. Made in 1949 and still going strong and I even have the original manual.

Test firing the cannon. The original would have been a brass barrel but that would have been far too expensive. I wanted to make one anyway. It has a 35mm bore which is smaller than the original but fits in with UK gun laws for a shotgun.

Just finished my new barrel for my 18thC light 3-pounder carriage. I started it in 2019 and only got it back from proofing in October.

We test fired it at the weekend and it makes one hell of a bang. The light 3-pounder was used by the British in the American War of Independence, mainly deployed in pairs supporting light infantry battalions. It was lighter than its predecessors and could be moved into positions the larger cannons could not.

At the end of the revolutionary war they were used as mountain guns.

Its first outing will be at the International Living History Fair at Avoncroft museum 15-16th April with my group Redcoats and Revolutionaries / 4th Battalion, Royal Artillery 1775-83
