I met the fabulous Waffle just before Christmas (left pic) and then at the beginning of the New Year! (Right pic) Look how much he has grown!!

Absolutely loving Harley’s new coat 😍😍
Looking good! 👍
We struggle to find a coat that fits as he has a very long body and short legs and a chunky neck! We also want to ensure that he has room to move his front legs due to his arthritis.
If you have a similar issue then I highly recommended coats. Whilst they are not cheap they are great for a special Christmas or Birthday present 🎁

If you have a new puppy joining your family you are bound to have lots of questions ⁉️and whilst you can look online for help it is hard to know what is the right advice! Consistency is key when it comes to puppy so starting off with the right methods and advice is vital to your success with the first journey home, the first night at home, toilet training, socialisation and lots more!

🐶Waffle's family decided to book a 𝗣𝘂𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝗿𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗽 𝗦𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 with me so they would be able to ask a puppy expert any questions and make sure they had everything in place for his arrival....Look how happy he is in his new home! Fallen asleep with his toy still in his mouth.❤️

It can be tempting to wait and see how you get on when your get a puppy...🐶
But you are missing out on setting the training up the right way for you both!

Pups need consistency and guidance! It is very easy in the first few weeks to think there is not much you need to do to have the dog you dreamed of.
BUT what you do in the first few weeks and months sets up the next few years of their life with you! Puppy School is for pups under 20 weeks on the date of the first course.

Commit to a initial 6 weeks of training, sign up to a class that you attend with your puppy and family and have fun learning how to train your pup together.

🐾Lead versus a harness

I often get asked about the best option for puppies in classes.
The recommendation really depends on the individual puppy. However in most circumstances I do recommend a harness.

Some things to consider;

🐶Is your puppy currently pulling on lead? or are they walking nicely next to you with no tension on the lead?

If your puppy is pulling on the lead consistently, as the area around a puppy’s throat is one of the most vulnerable parts of their anatomy! Pressure from a collar and lead can restrict blood flow and neural pathways and cause or exacerbate many physical conditions and may also cause pain that increases arousal and can impact your puppies behaviour.

⏰Have you got lots of time to practice lead walking training with your puppy?

It likely that you have lots of things to prioritise in your life and so having 2 options for walking your puppy can really help you practice at times that are best for puppies to learn. For example, using a lead and collar for training walks and a harness for when your puppy is off on a sniffy walk to take the pressure off and ensure the training walks remain fun and relaxed for you both.

🏥Does your puppy have any medical problems?
🫣Does your puppy back away from a harness and run away from it?

As harnesses go around the body it may not be suitable for them to wear a harness if they have a health concern. Equally if they are worried about handling then you would need to get them used to the harness slowly. Take a look at my blog ‘Getting your puppy used to handling’ for a few more tips!

In one of my puppy classes I was joking about my Labrador and how that as a breed they tend to inhale food without chewing it.

One of my very bright young handlers in class put their hand up and asked...

“ Why do Labradors have teeth if they don’t chew anything”😍😍🤣

🐾 It is Animal Pain Awareness Month. 💖 This is a subject I feel passionately about. It can be hard to spot pain in animals, they are experts at masking it and carrying on as normal. But we can get better at watching, observing and deciding if our animals are in pain. I have included some photos/videos of my dog; 👉he is not limping 👉he is not crying in pain 👉When off lead he runs, jumps, swims 👉He would chase a ball if you threw one 👉He would chase anything if he wanted to 👉He would jump on and off sofas and beds 𝗕𝗨𝗧 𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗰𝗵𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗻 and it has been managed through a multi-modal approach (which ” means using different methods together to get the best possible outcome.) Along with the above he also; ❗𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝗶𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗸𝘀 or be 𝘀𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗹 ❗His 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝘄𝗸𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 ❗He doesn’t pick his feet up always and you can hear 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝗯𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿. ❗There are 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀, such as becoming 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝘀 such as thunder and a 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 to heavy rain on windows. This response is not normal for Harley and is a strong indicator that we need to visit to the vet to look at options to help. I encourage you to take time to observe your dog and consider small changes in their behaviour. Whilst it can be frustrating when your dog finds another reason to stand still for ages getting a free meal when you need to get them home. Remember to use the freebies to your advantage!!! 😄Pick the best fat juicy ones they can’t reach and pop them in your treat pouch to reward them to stay close to you!

Our Story

With a background working and volunteering in well-known UK animal welfare charities, I am passionate about helping humans and their dogs develop lifelong relationships. As a different species to us, canines can appear complex at times! Building positive connections is possible, if we take time to understand our furry friends. This starts from the moment a new puppy is brought into the home. With the right training and socialisation, it can be a fun filled enjoyable time. Our aim at My Complex Canine is to see your puppies growing into happy dogs that will live out their days in their forever home as part of the family.

As a certified Puppy School Tutor I run family friendly groups classes, based on reward-based training, which basically means you will have lots of fun with your puppy using treats, praise and toys, whilst your puppy learns basic life skills and good behaviour. I also offer pre-puppy guidance visits to provide advice and guidance on how to choose your puppy and what you will need to prepare for when you bring your puppy home. In addition, I offer puppy home visits for older puppies/young dogs, as an alternative to group classes, or for extra training support in the comfort of your own home.
