A lovely supportive message from Blackberry Veterinary Clinic with some helpful links if you need some support at such a difficult time 🐶

Saying goodbye to your beloved companion can be a very emotional time.

Deciding if the timing is correct can be incredibly hard. We all want our pets to be around forever but sadly sometimes they may be struggling or sore and we may have to make that crucial decision to let them go. We are here to help you navigate that decision and will always support you in making this. We are not here to judge.

When the day comes, emotions can be high. We aim to make this visit as peaceful as possible and are happy to talk through the practicalities with you to make the day as smooth as possible. Every pet requires individual treatment. Some pets may need some mild sedation prior to us administering any injections. We can talk you through what is right for your pet. You are invited to stay with your pet but there is no obligation and again there will be no judgement should you feel you cannot stay.

Once they have passed you may wish to take them home to bury or arrange private cremation. We can also help arrange cremation for you to have ashes back or leave us to take care of things.

If you have family, broaching the subject with children can be very tough. The Blue Cross website has some lovely resources on how to do this in an honest way and encourage your children to talk about things.

We are happy to help to guide you through all of this. Our Vets and support staff would rather chat to you about any worries or concerns you have rather than you regret or worry about anything.

The Blue Cross also have a wonderful helpline that you can call before or after euthanasia to chat. You can also email or use their online chat facility.

Here is my dog laying in the coolest spot he can find.
He has access to cool water and a cool mat which he chooses to use when and if he wants to and that’s ok.

Please do not feel you need to walk your dog in this heat. It is too hot for them 🔥 It is the right thing to do not to walk them!

⚠️However if you have a dog that won’t wee in the garden I feel your pain!! As we need to give them an opportunity to go to the toilet as this is also a welfare concern.

PLANING is key!!!
✅ Aim for the middle of the day if possible around 12 - 12:30 before it gets super hot in the afternoon.
✅ keep your eye on the weather if there is a cloudy moment that’s the time to go.
✅ Avoid hot pavement (if you can’t hold your hand on it for 5 secs then it is too hot for your dogs paw pads). Pick them up if they are small.
✅ If you do not have a shaded walk on grass or similar then consider if a short car 🚗 journey to a better spot would work.
✅ Make sure the car is cool before you go and take car shades to help keep it cool.
✅ only walk them to wee💩, once they have done this go back home.
✅ Use a cool bandana for your dog (pop it in the freezer before you go on your walk so it is nice and cool 😎)

If you are worried your dog will get bored, then prepare some cool enrichment activities for them. Like Harley’s favourite mashed banana frozen on a LickiMat 😋

For those pet parents who have dogs that love water 🐶

For those pet parents who have dogs that love water 🐶

A lot of people have heard of blue-green algae (also called cyanobacteria) and the dangers that their toxins might pose for pets who come into contact with them, but do you know when and where you can find these bacteria? 🤔

Cyanobacteria like to grow in warmer water that doesn’t move a lot, so if you like going for outdoor adventures with your pets in those sunny late spring and summer days, you might run into them in:

💧 Smaller places like fountains or bird baths that haven’t been cleaned well

💧 Ponds, lakes and slow-moving rivers

💧 Puddles that formed during heavy rain or flooding

They can look like greenish paint spilled on the water, brownish clumps on the surface, or even thick foam.

Don’t delay! If you notice your pet might have ingested contaminated water, call us as soon as possible.

Keeping on top of training and enrichment can feel like a big task.
Try not to think of it like taking a big chunk of time out your day.
Instead consider a typical day and look for moments you can do a bit of training that fits into your personal situation.

For example
👍 In the kitchen making dinner feed your puppy on their mat often to build up value for choosing the mat instead of the kitchen surfaces.
👍 Going to do some gardening, hide a toy and get your puppy searching, rewarding them when they find it with a short game.
👍 Boiling the kettle, practice some heel work with your puppy in the house rewarding them for walking next to your leg whilst saying your 'heel' cue.
👍 Out on a walk off-lead recall your puppy to have a quick play with their favourite toy then cue them to go sniff the environment
👍Watching a bit of TV, rather than fast forward through the adverts spend 2-3 mins practising basic positions, sit, down, stand or stay!

Use your moments well and you will be doing little and often training regularly which is what your puppy needs to learn 🙌

Today is K9 Veterans Day. 💖

You may or may not agree with using dogs in the military, BUT every dog at war deserves us taking a minute, to thank them for their service and sacrifice. 💕

Let's honour all the military dogs that have served by our sides throughout history. They are very special animals!🐶

‘What inspired you to do what you do?’

It's actually not a hard question to answer for me!

💕 I studied Psychology at university and I spent years working in a professional capacity training people. I like teaching, I like trying to make things as easy to understand as possible.

💕Since a young child I have loved animals, especially dogs. I was never allowed my own pets, but that just meant I found every opportunity to give love to my family and friend's animals. My neighbour's cat used to jump 3 fences just to come and sit on my lap for a cuddle. I actually never fed him! Getting my own puppy actually taught me more than any human.💗

💕I worked and volunteered at rescue centres and I saw so many young dogs coming in because their dog parents were no longer able to deal with their behaviour. The dogs were amazing, just very sadly they had not been understood as puppies and therefore had learnt undesirable behaviours.

If you have a puppy, or are looking to get one, it is so important to get them started with the best training methods and to understand what they are communicating to you. Puppy School is just what you need.

Getting your puppy comfortable around household appliances when they are young.

It’s something we can do slowly and at a time when you do not actually need to do the chore.
Think of getting them used to the hover first with no sound are they confident to approach it in the room?
Are they able to relax when the hover is moving around the room? Still no sound.
Really we would like to observe the puppy starting to ignore the hover. It’s getting boring 🥱

Then we can see how they respond to the sound of the hover placed in the other room. Are they interested in the hover? If they run away you know they are not comfortable with the noise so STOP. Instead you can always record the sound of your hover on your phone and then you can play the noise on a lower volume. Remember dogs have better hearing than we do!

Just turning the hover on and get on with your cleaning chores around your puppy can be too much stimulus all at once and some puppies can actually find it scary! 😧

If we do this well the end result is a dog that will carry on doing what they were doing before the hover came out. 🙌☺️

Our Story

With a background working and volunteering in well-known UK animal welfare charities, I am passionate about helping humans and their dogs develop lifelong relationships. As a different species to us, canines can appear complex at times! Building positive connections is possible, if we take time to understand our furry friends. This starts from the moment a new puppy is brought into the home. With the right training and socialisation, it can be a fun filled enjoyable time. Our aim at My Complex Canine is to see your puppies growing into happy dogs that will live out their days in their forever home as part of the family.

As a certified Puppy School Tutor I run family friendly groups classes, based on reward-based training, which basically means you will have lots of fun with your puppy using treats, praise and toys, whilst your puppy learns basic life skills and good behaviour. I also offer pre-puppy guidance visits to provide advice and guidance on how to choose your puppy and what you will need to prepare for when you bring your puppy home. In addition, I offer puppy home visits for older puppies/young dogs, as an alternative to group classes, or for extra training support in the comfort of your own home.
