Please don't get annoyed when I refuse to show you how to use an aversive lead, collar or harness on your dog. They are sticking plasters! They hurt the dog and cause more problems than they solve.

So if you bring a slip lead, head harness or similar to my classes, I will ask you to remove them.

I feel the same way and have had an incident while driving on a busy road where the owner of a dog with an extendable lead was looking at her phone and the dog wondered out on to the road right in front of my car. I stopped my car and the rest of the traffic behind me and the owner still hadn’t noticed. I had to beep to get her attention. That could have had a very different outcome!!

Do you want to know the thing that makes me groan internally when someone walks into class? Is it the dog who is barking? No. Is it the dog who p*es everywhere? No. Is it the owner who arrives with a take away coffee? No

It’s a dog …. on an extendable lead!

Perfect explanation of what socialisation means!

Puppy/Dog Socialisation. 🐕‍🦺🐕🐩

What does it mean?
1. Does it mean your dog/puppy running about 'playing' with other dogs?
2. Does it mean that you can go places with your dog and your dog stays focussed on you, says hello to people and dogs but always returns their focus to you?

Answer is 2. Number TWO is the answer. Its not 1, its TWO.

Why? Anyone hate going into a party where you know no one and having to do those stupid ice breakers and being forced to chat to people you have no interest in and don't know?

Its my worst nightmare. I hate it, and generally speaking your dog may well too!! You're taking away your dog's choice. And when they get p'd off because we've forced them to socialise with dogs they don't like, we get cross and say 'Fido needs more socliaising"! Or even worse scold them and tell them off, making them more anxious around other dogs.

Dogs need space and choice!!

There are some breeds which just love being overly sociable (Hello Beagles and Cockerpoos!) but other breeds that like to take a back seat. They just want to hang about by themselves and don't want other dogs sniffing their bums, thank you very much.

Respect it, own it and move on. If your dog likes hanging out with you, sniffing its own p*e (and p*eing on it again and again), why force them into a situation where they can't escape.

A well run puppy class will teach you to read your dog's body language and how to tell if your dog is comfortable in situation. Learn to read what your dog is saying!

Remember, not everyone is a social butterfly and not every dog wants other dogs in their faces.

There is a movie coming out on Feb 18 called "Dog". It stars Channing Tatum and a highly trained Belgian Malinois. It's a road trip/buddy movie.

People are going to see this film and many will want their own Belgian Malinois. This is not going to end well for this breed.

A highly trained Malinois is a work of art. So is Michelangelo's statue of David but I don't necessarily want it in my living room.

This breed can be amazing in the right hands but they require a lot of everything. If you are considering getting a Malinois, please, first go meet some Malinois of all ages at your local rescue.

Be honest with yourself about the amount of time that you have to dedicate to training one of these dogs. Not the person that you want to be but the person that you are right now. Sitting on your ass and reading this post.

If you are still determined to get one. You can stem the inevitable tidal wave of Malinois that will be surrendered to the shelters by sourcing your dog in one of 3 places:

Your local shelter
A local Malinois rescue
A real, ethical breeder (researching one is hard work but an ethical breeder will prove their dogs and require that you return the dog to them if you can't keep it)

DO NOT get a Malinois from the guy down the street. Don't help backyard breeders line their pockets. Pure bred doesn't equal good breeding.

If you see the popularity of these dogs sky rocket and think you can make a quick buck by breeding some. May all of your financial ventures fail one after another.

Take heed!!

And if you are planning on getting a puppy make sure you are getting from a reputable breeder. Make sure you see the home, the mother, the father. Never arrange to meet somewhere for collection.
But before you do don’t forget all those poor pups sitting in shelters sadly waiting for their forever homes. Think of them first.

Socialising your dog.
We all know the importance of socialising a dog. However in my experience as a dog walker socialisation should be done first and foremost by the owners. Being introduced to all sorts of other dogs and environments should be done along side the person that the dog feels most secure with. You!
The idea that sending your dog/puppy off with a dog walker to be socialised could be potentially detrimental. Sending your pet off with a stranger, who then proceeds to put him or her in the back of a van which in itself is pretty daunting and then he/she is expected to walk and play with strange dogs is an awful lot to ask of your pet. The most comfortable way to do it is to meet friends with dogs and walk together as often as you can. Maybe then build it up to a dog park but always make sure your pup feels safe and secure with you before sending them off with a pack.
