Ekkolander Large Munsterlanders Owners and occasional breeders of Munsterlanders. We have been lucky to share our home with Large Munsterlanders since 1997 when Willow came to join our family.

At that time we had nothing to do with gundog work but both her and our older rescue dog took part in search & rescue training with the Lincolnshire police, and played at obedience, agility, tracking and some of the working trials training. It was when Willow was about 18 months old that I thought it would be good to teach her what an HPR was really supposed to do, and since then we have been hook

ed. After losing Ekko at 15.5 years old we now have four Munsters - Tulli who was 10 in June, Tulli's daughter Indie who is 7, Tulli's daughter Rivva who was 5 in June and Rivva's daughter Mahli who is just over 2 years old. They have all taken part in grouse counting and successfully competed in working tests. Tulli and Rivva have competed in field trials. Ekko (no longer with us) became a Field Trial Champion in 2012 - only the second Large Munsterlander in the UK to achieve this and 30 years after the first one and in 2019 Tulli won that second elusive 1st to join her mother as a Field Trial Champion. Rivva has now won two Novice Field Trials which qualifies her to enter Open trials as well as All Aged next season, a second in Novice, three awards in All Aged Trials including a 1st and a 3rd in Open. We are hoping to have a second litter from Rivva in Spring 2024.

We were out yesterday before the snow arrived :-). Quite a few Woodc**k around and a few Snipe.

It took Rivva a while to pick up the foot scent of this running Woodc**k but as soon as she did she quickly tracked it into the ditch.

Picking up today - pretty wet and Mahli still remembers 🤣

A team of guns from Ireland doing two days. They only managed to hit 17 on the first drive! The only pricked partridge we saw went a long way out of sight over the trees onto the next part of the hill. We went off to see if it could be found with every bird counting :-) and it was the baby dog who found it. She also came running back with another bird shot in the wing when we were checking round the old res after the second drive. She really is pretty amazing.

A few more birds for the other two - dead, live and running (fast) then home to get everything dried and ready for tomorrow.

Only two Snipe there today One pointed and one got up ahead of her. Only one Woodc**k sat out in the open as she went into some trees.

Popped out with Ruma this morning. Points on a Pheasant, a Snipe and a Woodc**k :-)

Quite a few Snipe getting up ahead and a few other Woodc**k She picked up the scent of 'the' Hare but unfortunately didn't see it or a rabbit that ran out of the gorse where she was.

We should have been out tomorrow but it's been cancelled so might go and have another look.

Mahli should have been on a shootover day today but on Saturday morning she decided to race down the field, knock Rivva flying (luckily unhurt) but end up hurting herself 🤣

So, I decided to let Ruma run instead :-). Her first run was in woodland which I was pleased about. She was working on to a bird that flushed so the gun just fired a shot for steadiness. A loose bird was shot unseen which was a very strong runner over the hedge. She tracked it for a while but it then disappeared back in yhe woods and we didn't manage to find it so we carried on hunting. Ruma then had a lovely solid point, held while I took some photos :-). Flushed hard through the brambles on command, took a couple of paces but then sat. On command went out like a little rocket for the retrieve, delivered to hand. A first proper HPR for her. What a clever puppy.

I ran her for a second time in some woodland (declining the cover crop as when Mahli ran there there were plenty of running birds). No birds this time but a Muntjac bolted right under her nose. She did have a short chase but then came back to me. A couple more casts and I picked her up :-). What a good day with a lovely group of handlers and guns :-)

We had a lovely morning out with Andy running Mahli and a little bit of Ruma :-)

Mahli was her usual naughty self in the big open fields (not a hedge in sight), didn't see the two hares that got up near her (Ruma did on the lead) but did have two good HPRs. There weren't many birds around today, it was icy cold and the river had flooded over the ground. Her first bird seemed to be in the water!
One was shot to land by the pole over the river but it was obvious as soon as she got over that it had run. It took a bit of finding but she did :-)

I had sent Ruma over the river lower down - just to see if she'd go over for nothing :-) which she did so at the end I threw a bird over unsighted and she did a lovely blind retrieve. This is a really good bit of river for training - not too wide for a youngster and as we don't have anything similar round us it was a good opportunity for her. She had a couple of short hunts - one she was obviously picking up where the hare had been stopping but luckily it was Mahli who actually made it run.

Today we've been on another enjoyable shootover day with Debs and D4Dogs. So warm!

Mahli ran in the morning with Ruma on lead. Mahli had a couple of good retrieves (live and dead). Sat steady for first one - not so for second that had run in front of her 🤣 but back to her confident self picking up. She then had a point which wasn't shot.

Ruma was on lead and pointed and flushed a pheasant in the hedge right at the start, saw two hares running across the field, pointed and flushed a hare in the brambles and then did a retrieve on a hare shot earlier while it was still limp :-). Great experience for her. I can't believe they are 8 months old today.

Rivva ran after a lovely lunch and a tipple :-). She found a Woodc**k from the previous dog"s run and retrieved a pheasant. She was then steady to a hare that took off at 100 mph from under her nose out in the open - very pleased with that.

Another good day. Thank you Debs and Jason.

A bit of time at home before H Group training and the Christmas lunch :-)

On Friday we had a lovely day out with Alex and Pete hunting for Woodc**k and Snipe. Not many Snipe around and Rivva's point turned out to be on a Jack. Two Commons lifted ahead. There were plenty of Woodc**k around and three ended up in the bag at the end of the day. Rivva came out with ruma on lead most of the time in the morning and Mahli and Ruma in the afternoon. One was shot on Geoff & Ruma's side and after Mahli and I struggled across the ditch I decided to send ruma as she had seen it come down out through the open gate. She made a lovely retrieve. Poor Mahli missed out as only one in the afternoon but was happy all afternoon - but she does know that ground.

After her early morning cold water swim I decided to take Ruma out on her own to the horrid scrubby bit of land. She's spent a lot of hours in the car lately.

We started with a couple of retrieves and then let her hunt. Pretty soon she was having a sniff when a very rare hare bolted. She threw her bum on the ground to whistle and sat watching where it went.

We carried on. A head wind on the way out. There were plenty of Snipe around today but they were all jumping up ahead of us.

We then took a strip further across on the way back through a more brambly, shrubby part with a backwind. She stopped on point and a Woodc**k flushed. She was still on point so I sent her in. She flushed a pheasant and sat to whistle as a second one flushed :-)

We carried on and she spun round on a Snipe. Two Woodc**k came from behind a tree and when I got closer she was on point :-)

We ended with a couple of blinds along the edge of the hedge as we got near to the car.

A successful hour for the baby dog.

We had a lovely shot over day on Monday with Emma and John. Plenty of birds around but the dogs had to work to find them. Rivva ran in the morning and Mahli in the afternoon. Mahli was very happy there :-) Pheasants for the Bug and Pheasants and a Snipe for Mahli. No photos of the Snipe as I was in a heap on the ground as she returned with it. 🤣🤣

Tuesday Mahli was one of the dogs on the Judges training day - there to be picked apart by the trainees. It was a good day and I think everyone enjoyed the day.

Mahli wasn't happy on her first run along a thick hedge with a stream which was sad. Happy to go out on the stubble but trying to avoid the hedge. Her third run was in a wood and she was totally her normal self. Worked a good cheek wind, pointed at some brambles, flushed (had to give her 3 commands though) and was steady when the c**k bird was shot . We saw it in the air but it went up and out of the wood to land who knows where :-). After a while I told her to fetch it and she was off like a rocket. After not very long she came running back with the still live bird :-) Progress and a happy girl.

On Friday we're going to have another attempt at finding Snipe and Woodc**k.

Another busy week!

If anyone had told me one of my dogs wouldn't hunt at any opportunity I would have thought they were mad, but that's what happened on Wednesday. (It just shows how easy it is for a bad experience to so badly affect a dog) Mahli really wasn't happy. She wasn't happy on the hedges the day before though either but on Wednesday she just didn't want to move (it was mainly hedges) - so I picked her up. It was very refreshing to see other dogs being put out for not hunting with drive which so often doesn't happen :-)

Then yesterday we were invited to a friends land to shoot over her - young turnips, and some lovely dead stuff :-) alongside the river. Back to her usual 100 mph self completely - going further than I wanted and not always listening to the whistle :-) Some good points and a couple of birds shot. Ruma retrieved from in and across the river :-) and saw two hares run while on the lead with Geoff.

Today picking up Mahli was much better for the two morning drives, even sitting and watching what was going on and picking the birds much more confidently. The one in the afternoon though she shut right down again until it was over.

Tomorrow we should have been out hunting for Snipe and Woodc**k but as we now have a red weather warning we have cancelled. A day here to catch up on what never gets done at the moment :-)

Picking up again today. Mahli is still not happy there during drives after her electric fence incident, choosing to curl up or sit and face the wrong way. I decided not to send her for anything unless she had sat up and looked keen :-). Luckily she is still fine sweeping through the wood/reservoir at the end of the drives.

Ruma did some great retrieves today on the last drive. Over a low bit of fence into the wood behind. Seen in the air but landing out of sight :-)

We worked them all round the Res at the end looking for anything pricked that had gone back. Ruma had a few points which was lovely to see - one backed by Mahli and right at the end a point with Rivva :-)

Another fabulous day out with our Keeper friend yesterday. Just Mahli interspersed with Ruma :-) Working moorland and turnips. Ruma's marking of the fall is amazing - even when she's been moved away from where she sat :-) and she keeps to that area until the bird is found when it has moved.

Out with the H Group again this morning in the forest - hunting and retrieving. Before we started I saw my first Red Squirrel. Such a lovely surprise. I spent too long watching it before I thought to take a photo and it had gone out of sight.

Two Field Trial Champions is more than I could ever have imagined. I am planning to have a litter from Rivva (Ekkolander Dark Rivva) in 2021. She is the daughter we kept from Tulli’s last litter to Axl (Sh Ch Quilesta So Majestic of Rockfest. She has been graded in Grouse Pointing Tests and won both Puppy and Novice working tests in 2019 . She has been working very well this last season. She has had her hips (0,0) and elbows (0,0) scored and is HUU clear. Her eyes were tested as Unaffected on 26-07-2020.

Please get in touch for more information or to be added to my waiting list if you might be interested in one of these puppies.
