Ekkolander Large Munsterlanders Owners and occasional breeders of Munsterlanders. We have been lucky to share our home with Large Munsterlanders since 1997 when Willow came to join our family.

At that time we had nothing to do with gundog work but both her and our older rescue dog took part in search & rescue training with the Lincolnshire police, and played at obedience, agility, tracking and some of the working trials training. It was when Willow was about 18 months old that I thought it would be good to teach her what an HPR was really supposed to do, and since then we have been hook

ed. Willow was followed by Bison, Grouse, Inca and then Ekko. We lost Ekko at 15.5 years old leaving us with four Munsters - Tulli, Tulli's daughter Indie, Tulli's daughter Rivva and Rivva's daughter Mahli. We then sadly lost Indie when she was just 9 years old which was three weeks after Rivva's second litter was born - giving us Ruma. Tulli is now 12 years old, Rivva is 7, Mahli 4 and little Ruma is just 14 months old. They have all taken part in grouse counting and successfully competed in working tests. Tulli, Rivva and Mahli have competed in field trials. Ekko (no longer with us) became a Field Trial Champion in 2012 - only the second Large Munsterlander in the UK to achieve this and 30 years after the first one and in 2019 Tulli won that second elusive 1st to join her mother as a Field Trial Champion. Rivva has won two Novice Field Trials which qualifies her to enter Open trials as well as All Aged, a second in Novice, three awards in All Aged Trials including a 1st and two 3rds in Open. Mahli won 1st place in an All Aged Field Trial last season and then got hit by an electric fence just as she picked up a partridge which really affected her. She managed to get a 4th place in an Open at the end of the season so fingers crossed she will feel happier this year. Little Ruma has just won a Novice Working Test (following in the footsteps of Mahli, Rivva and Indie who all won out of Novice at 13/14 months old) so will now compete with the big boys in Opens. We are hoping to have a litter from Ruma in 2027 if we can find a suitable boy.

A few days out again.

Friday we went looking for hares :-). The weather was far too hot but they did find two. Luckily the river was close by so the dogs could have a swim. It gave me the opportunity to start our stop in the water, look at me and be directed onto a blind with Ruma. After a couple of goes she got the hang of turning on the spot to look at me :-)

Monday we had some pigeons shot for both of them for steadiness with a stop at the lake on the way home. This time I stopped Ruma on the way out to a long seen and then directed her left and right (a good distance) for blinds with straight out retrieves in between. Perfect :-). We'll probably not need it again but that's the good thing about working tests - finding out what you could do with training for.

Tuesday was another visit to Rory"s sugarbeet for a bit more hunting in roots with a couple of cold retrieves thrown in.

Yesterday we joined the first day at Helmsley, hunting through various different kinds of ground cover. Ruma had her first deer getting up ahead while hunting and near the end of the day a hare - brilliant. She saw a few other hare while on the lead too.

Hunting through the mustard she had a good point which produced a lovely covey of wild young English Partridge which were lovely to see. She sat and watched while the first one came down again quite close and then the rest of the covey flushed around us :-)

Now a good break with just some do***ng in.

Just watching her ducks :-). The pups are 16 months old today - it has gone so fast.

Today we went to the Italian Spinoni's first working test since Julie Wain took over. What a Fabulous location at Rode Hall and only an hour from home which is amazing for us - usually we are driving hours.

There was an amazing entry of Munsterlanders across the four classes with six competing in Open which shows how well our breed is doing.

Ruma was running in Puppy and Open again. 10 puppies which was nice for a change and 18 ran in Open.

She was doing really well in Puppy judged by Stephen Robson and ended up tying with Ian T on 95 points but as he got 2 marks higher in the hunting we ended up with 2nd place which is a bit disappointing 🤣🤣

After the Novice results they called out the Open awards (judged by Lee Loveridge with Ruth Webster doing water ) and after CoM, 4th and 3rd you could have knocked me down with a feather when Squidge was called out for 2nd place :-). Such a clever puppy. Only 2 marks behind the winner. Well done Atos.

Thank you to everyone involved in the running of today. There were so many helpers there which is amazing. We even won a bottle of wine on the cartridge dip :-)

Our last WT will be at Watergrove and then next year it will be concentrating on the Open class.

A fun day yesterday with a great group of handlers, having the opportunity of hunting in some sugar beet and finding Partridges. The forecast was terrible but we actually got off pretty lightly :-)

A rest now till the weekend after driving up and down the country for three days!!

That was a good weekend Squidge ❤️

Yesterday we were up early to drive down to Market Rasen for the GWPA Working Test. What a lot of hard work Julie King had put into organising the day. Thank you to the landowners for allowing us access to this lovely ground. The chance to hunt on the stubble was great - a new experience for Ruma.

There were only five of.us.in the Puppy class judged by Adam Roberts and Jim Broadbent. Ruma's brothers, Freddy and Monty came 4th and 5th and Ruma was awarded Second place.

Home again and.an even earlier start today to drive up to Roxby for the Norfolk & Suffolk Grouse Pointing Test being judged by Harriet Lampart and Mark Taylor. I do love this moor. The N & S days are always such good fun - Denise :-)

There were birds to be found by all dogs Ruma ran really well and found birds - I was so pleased with her. At the end all the gradings for Good and Very Good were being called out and Ruma was left till last. I was absolutely thrilled when she was graded Excellent. Thank you to the Judges.

We have had plenty of Goods and Very Goods over the years but this was made more special as it is the first time we've ever had an Excellent. Well done little Squidge - you are very special ❤️

Tomorrow we're off to have a go in some sugarbeet - another first for Ruma and then a well earned rest until next weekend.

Day two done. It was very sad to see so many Grouse squashed on the road as we drove over. They were all along the verges and playing chicken across the road and I guess plenty of folk just won't slow down and wait as they saunter across the road.

A very warm day and it was over five hours before we came across a small stream that still had some water in for the dogs to have a good drink and dip and a chance to top up our water bottles.

Not such a good number of birds today as there were on Monday, but still slightly up on last summer so going in the right direction. Again we just alternated the dogs until near the end when they ran together.

There are more photos Ruma than the others because Geoff had Rivva and Mahli on leads when I ran her and it's easier to take photos without one on a lead :-).

At one of Ruma's points, as I started to walk towards her I fell down a hole and landed flat on my front :-). When I emerged from the heather she was still on point and the birds hadn't lifted :-). After a photo I carried on and she flushed the birds :-).

There were a few rabbits near the end so Ruma actually saw some run and Mahli had pointed THE hare :-)

That's it till next spring.

Yesterday was the first of our two annual summer counts. We thought we might get a shower at about 11 but by 7.45 the heavens opened and within minutes we were soaked :-). Luckily once it stopped there was a good breeze and by 10 we were dry and conditions were much better for the dogs. .

Rivva, Mahli and Ruma worked well - being alternated for five hours and the number of Grouse was well up on last summer which is very positive.

Our second count is tomorrow, so another early start.

After a 1.45 am alarm this morning we drove 3 hours to take part in a Grouse count. What a fabulous opportunity. As we drove across some moorland on the way there the roads and verges were covered with Rabbits running everywhere and then quite a few Hares. If only we could get this near to home :-) We didn't see one on the way home!

The weather was great and the eleven dogs (labs, GWPs, GSPs, Weimies and Ruma) found birds. It was lovely to see a big truck at the top when we had finished which transported us all the way back down. Eleven dogs in the back (including at least 5 entire males) all behaved impeccably which was so lovely to see. New experiences for the Squidge - working in a line of dogs and being transported like that :-)

When we were back down we were given permission to hunt a couple of reedy fields in the hopes of coming across some of their plentiful Rabbits but it seemed they had gone to bed :-) She found a C**k Pheasant and a single Grouse and then as we were heading back up to the car she came on point. Whilst she was on point a Hare bolted from the left of her which luckily she did see and watch away (I'd have preferred it to appear while she was hunting really as that is the first she's seen off lead) and then she produced a covey of Grouse which is what she had been pointing. Right in the last few minutes she stopped on point again and a Rabbit ran away so at least we did find one :-)

A quick run out this afternoon to send a few Partridges home before the H Group arrive later for some training.

Our Story

We have been lucky to be able to share our home with Large Munsterlanders since 1997 when Willow came to join our family. It was when Willow was about 18 months old that I thought it would be good to teach her what an HPR was really supposed to do, and since then we have been hooked. At present we have four Munsters - Ekko who is 13, her daughter Tulli who is 7, Tulli's daughter Indie who is 4 and the youngster from Tulli’s second litter - Rivva who is now 2 years old. All four have taken part in grouse counting and successfully competed in working tests. Ekko and Tulli have competed in field trials. Ekko became a Field Trial Champion in 2012 - only the second Large Munsterlander in the UK to achieve this and 30 years after the first one. Tulli also become a Field Trial Champion in 2019. Two Field Trial Champions is more than I could ever have imagined. I am planning to have a litter from Rivva (Ekkolander Dark Rivva) in 2021. She is the daughter we kept from Tulli’s last litter to Axl (Sh Ch Quilesta So Majestic of Rockfest. She has been graded in Grouse Pointing Tests and won both Puppy and Novice working tests in 2019 . She has been working very well this last season. She has had her hips (0,0) and elbows (0,0) scored and is HUU clear. Her eyes were tested as Unaffected on 26-07-2020.

Please get in touch for more information or to be added to my waiting list if you might be interested in one of these puppies.
