Ekkolander Large Munsterlanders Owners and occasional breeders of Munsterlanders. Hopefully we will be having one last litter in two years time.

Please get in touch if you might be interested in a pup. We have been lucky to share our home with Large Munsterlanders since 1997 when Willow came to join our family. At that time we had nothing to do with gundog work but both her and our older rescue dog took part in search & rescue training with the Lincolnshire police, and played at obedience, agility, tracking and some of the working trials t

raining. It was when Willow was about 18 months old that I thought it would be good to teach her what an HPR was really supposed to do, and since then we have been hooked. Willow was followed by Bison, Grouse, Inca and then Ekko. We lost Ekko at 15.5 years old leaving us with four Munsters - Tulli, Tulli's daughter Indie, Tulli's daughter Rivva and Rivva's daughter Mahli. We then sadly lost Indie when she was just 9 years old which was three weeks after Rivva's second litter was born - giving us Ruma. Tulli is now 12 years old, Rivva is 7, Mahli 4 and little Ruma is just 14 months old. They have all taken part in grouse counting and successfully competed in working tests. Tulli, Rivva and Mahli have competed in field trials. Ekko (no longer with us) became a Field Trial Champion in 2012 - only the second Large Munsterlander in the UK to achieve this and 30 years after the first one and in 2019 Tulli won that second elusive 1st to join her mother as a Field Trial Champion. Rivva has won two Novice Field Trials which qualifies her to enter Open trials as well as All Aged, a second in Novice, three awards in All Aged Trials including a 1st and two 3rds in Open. Mahli won 1st place in an All Aged Field Trial last season and then got hit by an electric fence just as she picked up a partridge which really affected her. She managed to get a 4th place in an Open at the end of the season so fingers crossed she will feel happier this year. Little Ruma has just won a Novice Working Test (following in the footsteps of Mahli, Rivva and Indie who all won out of Novice at 13/14 months old) so will now compete with the big boys in Opens. We are hoping to have a litter from Ruma in 2027 if we can find a suitable boy.

Yesterday we were lucky to be on a brilliant shoot over day with Ruma. There were only five dogs running so lots of runs on different kinds of ground. We finally got what I've been wanting for her and she was steady all day, plus a few other points (unshot) and retrieves. A really good and very fast retrieve before her second run which had landed in the middle of the maize. A couple of blind retrieves out in the Tenderstem Broccoli.

This morning we spent a couple of hours out with one of our Keepers but where we were the ground was so thick/high with brambles or very high grassy stuff that it wasn't very successful. I spent most of the time not knowing where she was :-) She did point a couple of Woodc**k though which is good practice for two weeks time :-) and retrieved duck from the pond hich was probably pricked on Saturday.

A few phone piccies from today as we were expecting to be wet all day. As it turned out, after rain early on the day got warmer and warmer and layers were being shed after each drive, with no coat for the last few :-)

A couple of birds had come down in thick bracken along the edge of the wood and each time I sent ruma and she didn't find anything straight away. Again each time, as she disappeared for what seemed like ages I was beginning to think she'd gone awol. Both times she reappeared, slightly out of breath with a pricked c**k bird :-)

Today was the first time out on the Estate side of the shoot which is pheasant and some ducks. I think Ruma was a bit unsure when sent for the first duck as she knows not to touch all the ducks on our pond here but she soon got over that :-)

We're still trying to get a bird shot off the point for Ruma out in the open to test her steadiness :-) It is so hard on group days to get what 'normal' handlers really need. If you are lucky enough to get a bird to point on your run it is not always hit or maybe (not that we've had the chance yet) the dog might run in. You can tell it what it's done wrong but then you often have to wait an hour before you get a second opportunity. So different for the 'professionals' who can go out whenever they want and shoot what they need to show the dog what is required.

We've managed an HPR this week but the bird started to run from the brambles along the fence when flushed and was shot over the fence so although she could have gone over if she wanted to it isn't the test I need :-) We did, however, have on one of her runs along a fence where she had several points but the birds flushed the other side, a deer running towards us. It kept on coming closer until it realised its mistake and turned tail and disappeared :-)

The next day, in the pouring rain, there were no birds, but working a grass field on the way back to the car Ruma was working on scent. I blew the whistle to turn her off (trying to stop the tracking too far on scent) and a hare bolted from just in front of her. She just stood and watched it race across the field :-) I'd rather she sat and she will if told again but she seems to prefer to stand!

This morning we had our own FT run without a gun (which was a shame) in the root field opposite that we have the use of for another week. I hadn't expected there to be anything in it (maybe an odd rabbit) I just wanted to be able to do turn whistle training. On our first visit she went on point and a covey of English Partridge flushed ahead. A week later they were back but took off before we got near. This morning the wind was the opposite direction so we worked a back wind, cheek and then head. She was obviously working on the scent and came on point. Moved ahead a bit and froze. She flushed on command and stood and watched the covey take off :-) Now, that is what I need on a shoot over day with a bird shot :-)

A quick trip to the horrid scrubby bi this morning while the weather was good to see if there were any Snipe around and whether a Woodc**k had arrived yet. No Woodc**k but Squidge did find several Snipe. I even managed to send her in to flush a couple while the others got up themselves as I went a bit closer. Luckily I don't think they get disturbed very often as luckily anyone who goes over that way seem to stick to the pathway down the middle (understandably).

Partridges from Monday all breasted ready for picking up again tomorrow.

Yesterday we were at Upper Helmsley with the GSPC Yorkshire Group on their shot over day. Six dogs and three guns. Mahli ran in the morning but I decided to let Ruma have a go after another lovely lunch (thank you Vicky). She did really well, hunting through the fodder radish/turnips/phacelia, was steady to the bird shot and made a lovely retrieve when sent. She was awarded joint Keeper's dog of the day along with Zia. Thank you Sean.

Back to lanyards today after a good day picking up yesterday.

Ruma jumping twice yesterday and the camera was on the correct setting this time :-) It took her a little while to think about the first one at the metal gate as she hasn't been over there before - she'll remember for another time.

There are some Turkeys up on the mountain with the Pheasants and Partridges and yesterday afternoon two were shot. As no other dogs had run for the one that came down in the bracken filled gully I thought I'd give Ruma the chance :-) It took a little while for her to locate it but as she did it ran! Up out of the gully, across the grass over to the gate just below where the cars are parked, followed by Squidge. She managed to pick it up below the wing (best way like with a goose) and brought it all the way back, through the bracken and gave it to me still alive. Such a good girl.

We worked the dogs back round the reservoir this time on the way back to the shed and right near the gate I spotted Ruma on point :-) The chap by the gate had just gone through ahead of us but past Ruma with his three dogs and had never seen a dog on point before. I sent her in to flush which she did (fast) and did go a couple of yards forwards before stopping! This needs working on out in the open. We did get a proper sit on a second point and flush at the end of the day at a small gorse bush but obviously no birds were shot on these two occasions. Hopefully next week we will get the chance to practice this :-)

A few from today. Too warm at times! Ten guns today all with loaders :-) They were after 300 birds but I think they would have been lucky to hit 200 They did however beat the shoot record for the number of shots fired :-) They all had a good day which is the main thing.

M was much better again but she does take a long while to pick some of the birds during a drive. They come back undamaged but it looks messy and I can imagine what a Judge would be thinking!! She's much better on a runner or sweeping through afterwards. It will be interesting to see if she's better with pheasants (they have only just started shooting them) as it was a Partridge she got shocked with.

Ruma did a couple of brilliant retrieves (blind to her) today. Early on a Partridge was pricked and sailed over us, across the mountain side, over a fence and on. She did watch it at the time but it was a fair while till the end of the drive. The dogs were hunting the mountain side across and then all of a sudden Ruma jumped the fence 🫤 and took off in the direction the bird had gone. She was hunting around, ignored a pheasant that got up, took a left down the hillside and was then on he way back with the bid - over the fence again! A couple of pheasants for her today to make a change from all the Partridges.

Rivva was her usual brilliant self.

Bird Flu appears to be getting closer! The shoot we were going on tomorrow is now half inside the surveillance zone as a poor chicken farm had to have all their birds gassed yesterday. That must be just devastating. Anyway, we're going somewhere different now so 🤞we might still actually get them shot over for the first time this season. :-)

Had to come home and swap vehicles this morning on the way to picking up as Geoff's came up with a gearbox warning message!!
A lovely day with M still appearing to be happy most of the time :-)

Do***ng in this morning we came across a dead pigeon with no damage. Its mouth was full of acorn insides. I'm sure I read somewhere that they are poisoning themselves. It made a good impromptu retrieve though :-)
Lots of points/flushes this morning in the field margins.

Over the last two weeks we've been to two dog shows with Jayne and Groot and three shot over days - not that we have managed to get a bird shot off a point yet :-) Maybe Tuesday will be the day. 🤞 Also out looking for Snipe and anything else she might be able to point

There were hardly any entries at the first Champ Show as there were no CCs but we wanted to give the Judge an entry. Ruma ended up Reserve Best Bitch and Groot was Reserve Best Dog :-)

The first two shot over days went pretty well. She was steady when working through cover and a bird got up and was shot not far away on both. Was steady to a Hare which came from the brambles she had disappeared into and sat at the top of a big hill watching it kicking at the bottom before making a really good retrieve. Also a good blind on a pheasant in the wet reeds area after the previous handler had gone up to her waist in water trying to stop her dog who had run in. Luckily he had mismarked it :-)

I thought we were going to manage an HPR on the second day. Ruma was on point at a patch of brambles, the gun got into position, I sent her in and out ran a Muntjac :-)

The third day is best forgotten about as for some reason she just seemed to go mad!

Today we were picking up again. The morning was lovely (if a little chilly) but at 12 o'clock the heavens opened and we spent the afternoon getting drenched so only photos from the morning. The best thing about today was that Mahli was happy all day, watching everything that was shot (or not) and even went for a blind retrieve in the afternoon. That is the first time she has done that since last September on the shoot. They shot some pheasants today for the first time. Ruma did a great long retrieve over a low fence andminto a pen on a pricked hen :-)

The guns today were from Cambridge doing two big ays back to back. One young couple had their three year old daughter with them. So sweet. Dressed in a shirt and tie. Twice she retrieved a bird and came and gave it to us.

All four have taken part in grouse counting and successfully competed in working tests. Ekko and Tulli have competed in field trials. Ekko became a Field Trial Champion in 2012 - only the second Large Munsterlander in the UK to achieve this and 30 years after the first one. Tulli also become a Field Trial Champion in 2019. Two Field Trial Champions is more than I could ever have imagined. I am planning to have a litter from Rivva (Ekkolander Dark Rivva) in 2021. She is the daughter we kept from Tulli’s last litter to Axl (Sh Ch Quilesta So Majestic of Rockfest. She has been graded in Grouse Pointing Tests and won both Puppy and Novice working tests in 2019 . She has been working very well this last season. She has had her hips (0,0) and elbows (0,0) scored and is HUU clear. Her eyes were tested as Unaffected on 26-07-2020.

Please get in touch for more information or to be added to my waiting list if you might be interested in one of these puppies.
