🎩 Jonesy 🎩.
This lovely gentleman of a boy was signed off from physiotherapy last month after recovering from L2-L3 disc extrusion, treated with just conservative management. We had certain aims to hit due to the owners going away on holiday, and with the help of a dog buggy, he was able to travel with them, enjoying the walks and scenery.

🐑 Walter 🐑
Well done to everyone who guessed Walters breed, he is an Old English Sheepdog!
I am currently seeing Walter for hip dysplasia and spinal discomfort. We are still early days on our treatment plan with Walter but he is a pleasure to see.

💪🏼 Gus 💪🏼
Gus was showing a little limp/ skip on his right hind, after investigations Gus was diagnosed with Grade 1 luxating patella. On assessment Gus showed to have very slight muscle atrophy over his right quadriceps. Treatment plan made with home prescribed exercises to target the quads - this in turn helps to support the stifle joint (knee).
Gus parents did such a fantastic job with doing their homework that by the second appointment the skip had gone 👏🏼
Well done Gus 👏🏼⭐️

🗓️ Please be aware that I am near fully booked for May with only a couple of spaces free, depending on the location. 🗓️
If you require evening appointments please book in advance. I would rather have you in the diary, and if needs be closer to the time we change the appointment, if it is no longer required.
I am also booking up in June, so if you are worried please book a few sessions in advance when I see you next (I know most of you do anyways!)
And a big thank you for supporting my business, it’s a wonderful feeling that I am this busy and you are trusting me with your adorable animals 🥰
(Another thank you for everyone who I’ve seen this week whilst I get to grips with my new online systems; it’s a slow transition but a much better one)

When a high energy or anxious dog becomes settled with me and falls asleep 😴
Every time I find it such a huge achievement that these dogs are comfortable and feel safe with me touching and helping them.
This guy is Harley, and he is ready to love everyone, but can be very high energy and actually quite anxious when it comes to massage. He is being seen for stiffness and presents with a very sore, tight back. We have taken it very slow in the sessions, but by the third he was lying down and falling asleep 😴 needless to say me and his owner were (very quietly, to not disturb him) grinning from ear to ear!

🍣 Sushi 🍣
This lovely little lady has been signed off from physio after recovering from a big operation for IVDD. Sushi had a fenestration operation from T11-L4. When I first saw her she had no use of her back legs, the surgeons were unsure if she would regain full use of them, but she now walks unaided, albeit with a slight arch in her back, but it doesn’t stop her being sassy 🤭
Well done Sushi 👏🏼🍣

We made it…February is finally here after a long January, we survived FIVE Mondays in a month 🥴🫣
February is already busy for me, only a few spaces available at the end of the month 🐶🐴
Longer evenings are starting to creep back in, which means more time for riding and dog walks 🥳
Get in touch if you want your animals checked over so you can ensure you can have a fulfilled and active spring/summer 💪🏼
As we know the shoot season is finishing up, but the hunt season is still going strong! Galloping across country and jumping hedges, I’ve been keeping the Hampshire hunt horses feeling as best as they can 🐴
If you go out regularly with a hunt, it is always worth keeping ontop of how your horse feels. I can easily accommodate to appointments so you don’t need to miss out on a days riding at the weekend.

The end of the shoot season is nearly here..me and Digby have enjoyed watching and having a go at a few retrieves.
Watching the dogs on a shoot really shows how much they have to work. The ground has been unkind with being boggy and then frozen, the weather not helping with constant rain and very cold.
If you feel like your dog has worked very hard this season, then why not get them checked over and relieve any discomfort. Not only will they be appreciative of this, but they can keep full filling their job and what is being asked of them to the best of their ability.
Keeping your dog comfortable, happy and at their peak performance will help minimise pain, potential injuries and lameness.
Get in contact if you would like to have a chat about your dog 🐶
Beautiful girl Saffy is the first cat to be on the stance analyser 😻 one of the vets at very kindly let me borrow her cat to help practice with the stance analyser. This proved to be quite interesting on how cats distribute their weight; showing to have a slightly higher percentage on their back legs, whereas dogs have a higher percentage on their front legs. We are also having a little play around to see if her weight distribution will change before and after her solensia injection (cat version to librella).
Sometimes work involves playing around and having fun, with hopefully finding out some cool data 🤩
Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend 🐱🐶🐴

🎄A farewell to 2023🎄
I would like to take this opportunity to say to all my lovely clients a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
As many would know, 2023, has not been kind to my family. I would like to say a big thank you, to you all, who have been exceptionally understanding of my circumstances this year. It has not been easy, but you all made it easier for me to work and adjust when needed. And for that I am, and always will be, very grateful.
I have big hopes and plans for 2024, offering new services with the Stance Analyser and hopefully a few other things in the pipeline.
I look forward to seeing you all again in the New Year and welcoming any new clients.
Merry Christmas and here’s to 2024!

👑 Liz 👑
Snoozy little lady Liz is how we all feel on a rainy Sunday! I’m lucky enough to see Liz once a week to give her a massage. She suffers with hip dysplasia and arthritis so I help to make sure any muscular pains are kept to a minimum.

⚡️ STANCE ANALYSER ⚡️
I am so pleased to say that I now offer stance analysis within my treatment programmes. This involves your dog to stand on a mat with each limb in a different quarter. The system then shows the weight distribution within each limb. This will help treatment plans by knowing how your dog is weight shifting/compensating, we can then document how your dog is progressing as we go through their sessions.
This will also help for early detection of any weight shifting, helping to keep on top of any subtle changes that may further down the line show your dog to be in pain.
The costs are as follows:
All initial consultations will be increased by £5, making it £55. This includes the stance analyser and gives us a baseline of where your dog is.
There after appointments will be kept the same at £45, however, if you would like to use the stance analyser, or we need to gather some data to see how your dog is progressing, then an extra charge of £5 is applied.
If you would like to just come and use the stance analyser, with no physiotherapy treatment, then this will cost £20. Please be aware that if I am coming to you then there may be extra charges for fuel.
If you are a local therapist and you would like your client to use this stance analyser so you can then use this data for their treatment, please do get in contact.
Any questions please let me know!

🥣 Porridge 🥣
The hunt season has begun and porridge had a check up to make sure all is okay. A few little niggles through his back, as to be expected, but easily resolved and is fit and ready to continue the rest of the season 😊

🍓Strawberry🍓
This special mare gets treatment every 4 weeks due to having a tight neck that has limited her range of motion. At her first treatment I could feel the muscles responding and releasing which resulting in strawberry doing some big releases of yawning and sneezing. By her third treatment we are definitely seeing improvements and a better range of movement 🤩
10/08/2023
As of the 1st September there will be a small increase in my prices. The new prices will be:
Canine initial £50 (previously £48)

Equine follow up £55 (previously £53)
Appointments already booked during September will be honoured the original price, unless your appointment is with me at the vets then it will need to be the new price.

🐺Gibbs 🐺
This handsome boy was signed off today after having physio for a left TPLO surgery - this is a tibial plateau levelling osteotomy surgery for torn cruciate. He’s been wonderful to rehabilitate and is just like a cuddly bear 🐻. It’s now over to to continue his rehabilitation.

A Friday with a surprise! Turning up to a client and one of their mares had foaled in the field about 15 minutes to us turning up 😍 needless to say no work was done as we moved her up to the stable and just wasted time staring at her 😍 a very lively little chestnut filly; which if you didn’t know already, anything that is chestnut is a weakness of mine 🤭

A very busy day of treating horses and dogs…checking a fox hound for the hunt as they had noticed some lameness and wanted to make sure he is as comfortable as possible 👏🏼plan sorted and exercises given.
And then treating a yard of absolutely beautiful dressage horses 🥰 thankfully the stables are large and airy so staying out of the heat has been a bonus 🌞

💪🏼 Benji 💪🏼
It has been a few weeks with lots of sign offs 🤩
Benji was also signed off last week after an intermittent right forelimb lameness. Assessment showed a reduced shoulder extension and muscle atrophy of the bicep brachii. Exercises given and his mum did such a superb job that after three (!!) sessions there is no lameness and equal shoulder extension 👏🏼👏🏼

Please be aware from the 19th June my opening hours will be changing slightly. Booking in advance is always recommended to ensure you get the time you prefer.
Unfortunately, working very long hours every day is just not feasible and I want to be able to provide the best service possible. Therefore, I will be quite strict with these hours.
Thank you ☺️

This photogenic boy is an old client I have started seeing again since he’s had his second TPLO done. His owners know what to do and how to handle him so fingers crossed for a straight forward rehab journey🤞🏼

We can finally do the straddle pole exercise 🙌🏼 after giving Peppie a command on how to move her hind legs away from me independently means I have been able to adjust her position better. You can see how she uses her body awareness of picking up her hind legs to place down correctly.
I don’t always like to work Peppie in a ridden sense, she can get easily bored and is a quick learner. This type of exercise gets her to use her brain as well as improving her proprioception, so I can work her more mentally rather than physically. Something that is always beneficial 🤓

A whole year since my own cat alfie got hit by a car and we started the road of rehabilitation. Here’s a little snippet of him doing his exercises to make sure he’s still using his tarsus well and the surrounding muscles are maintained to support the joint.

🤓TENS MACHINE🤓
Well done if you guessed correctly on my stories! Let me tell you about the useful TENS machine, full name being Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation.
🤔 What does TENS help with?
🌟 Muscle Spasm
🌟 Muscle re-education
🌟 Nerve Damage
🌟 Subacute / Chronic soft tissue disorders
🌟 Oedema
🌟 Vasodilation
🌟 Pain.
🤔 How does the TENS machine work?
TENS machine works on pain relief gained from the pain gate mechanism or opioid system. This is done by activating A- BETA and A-DELTA sensory fibres which activate the opioid mechanism and reduce the transmission of any painful stimulus from C fibres.
🤜 What are A-BETA, C Fibres and A-Delta Fibres??
These are found within nerve fibres connected to different types of receptors in the skin, muscle, and internal organs. A-BETA fibres carry information related to touch, C-fibres carry information related to pain and temperature, whilst A-DELTA fibres are associated with sharp acute localised pain.
🤷♀️So how does this link to the TENS machine?
After a minimum of 30 minutes the TENS machine will raise opioids; a maximum of 60 minutes releases a maximum dose of endorphins. Opioids are the body’s natural pain control for injuries, they bind to receptors in the spinal cord and reduce pain signals to the brain.
In conjunction to manual therapies and stretching, after the use of the TENS machine this then helps the affected muscles to relax and elongate; allowing the muscles to work correctly with a reduced pain response.

About Laura
Paddock & Paws is a mobile Veterinary Physiotherapy service, based within Hampshire, Berkshire and surrounding areas, specialising in Equine and Canine. Working under veterinary referral conditions may vary from musculoskeletal, surgical cases, neurological deficits and degenerative problems. Each client is treated as an individual, with bespoke programmes being made to include the owner, how the client is progressing and with Laura able to apply manual therapies, prescribe remedial exercises and use electrotherapy modalities in order to achieve the optimum care.
Laura gained her qualification in 2017 after the completion of a BSc (Hons) in Veterinary Physiotherapy at Warwickshire College, Moreton Morrell with the NAVP. The NAVP is recognised as one of the first in the industry to develop the direct entry route for veterinary physiotherapy. In order to be a member of NAVP a strong scientific knowledge, clinical practice and continued research must be obtained and upheld. Working alongside veterinary surgeons, you can be assured that the highest standard of physiotherapy care is given.
Laura's passion has always laid within animal welfare and care, this is shown by having extensive knowledge within the equine, canine and feline sector. Having had her own horses, Laura has over 15 years of equine experience, ranging from working with the RDA, riding schools, showing, dressage, along with an array of equine management and BHS qualifications.
Growing up with dogs, Laura has also worked along side dog walkers which enabled her to gain more breed specific knowledge within dynamic and behaviour assessments. Laura has a strong passion in educating owners on common conditions and what to look out for, ensuring that our beloved canine friends are happy and comfy for as long as possible.
Laura has gained a considerable amount of experience and knowledge in the handle and care of felines. Having two cats herself, Laura worked in a cattery which would have an array of different medical treatments to be administered to the cats. This allowed her to understand the different behaviours that can be portrayed and is aware of how important it is to note different behaviour patterns.
