I absolutely LOVE getting updates from puppy owners who I have been working with about their achievements!

Today, i had an update about Otis the Lab who was finally let offlead in the park for the first time around distractions of children, adults, dogs, prams and a tractor!

It's such a relief for puppy owners to be able to have that level of confidence that their pup isn't going to dart away, and will come back when called.

Well done Otis and his parents for working so hard on their training!

This morning I met Eira the 9 week old cockerpoo for her first training session!

Today, I addressed main priorities that her owner has including:

- How to deal with puppy biting when it arises
- The best approach to building seperation
- What to do if Eira has something that she shouldn't in her mouth
- What to do about puppy p**p 💩 eating
- How to continue heading in the right direction with toilet training
- How to start exposing Eira to the big wide world before she is fully vaccinated

Eira made a start with learning some basic training skills such as:

- sit with duration
- lie down with duration
- the mat is an amazing space to be
- lie down on the mat with duration and mild distractions
- going into the crate brings a positive outcome

I absolutely love this blanket that Eira was given by her breeder!

Thank you to my doggy for being so understanding today when I'm not very well!!

Surely our dogs MUST know when something is 'off' about us - they spend so much of their time observing our body language, so when something is different, they should notice!

Today I've been feeling guilty about not taking him for a walk, but Prince doesn't seem too bothered because over the years I have made a point of not giving him a strict routine, just incase of these times where I CANT give him walks at a specific time, or at all for the day.

But Prince has been super cuddly and generally a super good boy!

Please post a picture of your good boy or good girl in the comments - it might help to keep my mind off feeling so terrible!

Meet Max the teenage lab who I met today for his first one to one training session as a part of The Puppy Solutions Program!

There's never a time where i'm not working with a lab - they are SOOO much fun, super clever, great family pets, full of beans, loving and happy to see everyone!

BUT

They are so big and strong, that all of this excitement can quickly become difficult to deal with!

This enthusiasm to say HI to everyone in the street or the park can quickly escalate to unmanageable pulling on the lead, a lack in focus and running away when off lead to jump up at people in the distance, along with ignoring you when you try to call them back!

When a lab hits adolescence at around 6 or 7 months old, this can feel more exaggerated because a lab just doesn't realise their own strength, which can spiral into stress, injury and worry for many owners.

The key to all of this is knowing what to do, how to build calm, how to build focus, recall and loose lead walking along with teaching your lab how to cope in a wide variety of distractions and environments.

Starting training at a young age (asap!) can be a huge help in preventing these problems escalating into adulthood and greatly improved your success of having that happy, healthy dog that you want to take to all sorts of environments with minimal stress.

Top 5 tips from a dog trainer that every puppy owner should know!

Do you see 'Before' and 'after' videos of dog behaviour and feel impressed?

Have you ever thought about the stress a dog had to go through for that 'before' video?

So many dog TV shows do this and the main objective is to get the audience hooked. It's just not ethical to put a dog in a position of stress for the camera and its increasingly happening with Internet dog trainers!

A good, qualified behaviourist or trainer wouldn't stand there and intentionally put the dog in that position for a 'before' video for you!!!

I find it such a shame, that in 2024, we as ethical dog trainers are STILL seeing an INCREASE of outdated, unethical aversive dog trainers popping up using training methods and tools which are PROVEN to cause long term emotional and physical damage to a dog.

When you hire a dog trainer, you expect them to be guiding you and giving you THE BEST training methods which allows you and your dog to THRIVE.

Unfortunately, training tools such as these below are continuing to be used by dog trainers – but WHY is this?

There are a couple of reasons to why this is happening –

1) A lack in quality education

The dog training industry is not a regulated industry, meaning that anyone can pop up and call themselves a dog trainer without having sought out means of educating themselves.

Through this lack of education and knowledge of the science of dog training and behaviour, it is unknown to these trainers just how much damage these tools and methods are actually causing to the dogs that they’re working with.

2 ) THE QUICK FIX EFFECT!

Even though these training tools are harmful to many degrees, they DO work very quickly in reducing the unwanted behaviours that your dog is exhibiting because they are causing pain, discomfort and for many tools - structural damage to your dog.

Not only that, by using these tools, you are not only breaking the bond between yourself and your dog, but also suppressing unwanted behaviours rather than fixing them – meaning that you are likely to see problems pop up in other areas!

Back in 2014 when I became a dog trainer, I had hope that as time went on there would be more opportunities for dog trainers to become educated (which now there is – YAY!), and that therefore the amount of outdated and unethical trainers would decrease.

But this is not the case – which is VERY frustrating and completely upsetting for dog trainers who just want to make sure that dogs are given the highest quality dog training advice, which is safe and humane.

When looking for a dog trainer, please ask questions about what training methods they use, ask questions about what qualifications, certifications, experience they have.

And if you have found yourself in a position where your dog trainer IS using harmful, forceful methods and tools to teach your dog to ‘comply’, then please walk away!

SLEEPY PUPPY!!

Floyd had his second one to one today as a part of The Puppy Solutions Program, and today learned all about giving his parents focus when he's on the lead.

He also learned a stay and we added words to behaviours that he started to learn last week.

Learning is exhausting!

All we want from our dogs is to give them freedom, love and have the confidence that they will grow up to be a valued member of the family that we can enjoy, and getting the right support for that can take you a long way!

Today, Lottie the 5 month old golden retriever had her 3rd one to one training session as a part of The Puppy Solutions Program!

Lottie learned the foundations to recall and did an amazing job at coming back when called!

Her mam told me that she's super pleased to be getting all of the support that she's getting from The Puppy Solutions Program, because having a puppy can be such a daunting experience, and knowing what to do when obstacles and questions pop up is of top importance for her!

One of the questions which I regularly ask puppy owners is – what do you want from your dog when they are a fully grown adult?

Sometimes it’s easy to focus on what we don’t want, we forget to look at the whole picture and figure what we DO want from our dog!

By asking this question I can get a good idea of the main training goals and priorities.

Here are some of the most frequent answers which I get:

- ‘A dog who is happy and confident – I can go for long walks in the woods or on the beach, let them off lead and they will come back when called. On lead they will walk nicely without pulling to get somewhere.’

- ‘I may need to leave my dog at home sometimes, so he will need to be calm and happy to be left alone for a couple of hours.’

- ‘No chewing the furniture, listening to me when I need it and calm through the day.’

- ‘A dog who will fit in well as valued member of the family’

- ‘I just want my dog to be safe and for us to enjoy each others company’

All of these goals are very possible and it’s not a coincidence that the owners who invest in their dogs education at a young age are able to enjoy these freedoms sooner than later.

That’s not to say it’s easy – having a puppy comes with it’s challenges and training takes time and effort.

I know that one of the biggest obstacles in the way for many dog owners is knowing HOW to train your puppy to get what you want.

You wouldn't believe how many times a pup has their first wee on a walk when I'm there with them during a one to one, or finally has a wee in the garden when their parents have been trying to get them to do it for ages!

Sometimes, a pup just needs to relax!

Today I met up with Teddy, who's mam told me that he just goes in the garden, zooms about just to come back in and p*e on the carpet!

How frustrating!

As I observed Teddy in the garden, I noticed that he sees it as a total play zone and doesn't stop to sniff or relax.

So we started to sprinkle some treats on the grass to slow him down - and within minutes he had a p*e!!!

I'm hoping this is the start of Teddy heading in the right direction!

Puppies need A LOT of sleep!

At the young age of roughly 8 to 13 weeks old, your puppy will need roughly 15 to 20 hours of sleep a day!

And if they don't get the quality amount of sleep that they need, then you're likely to see behaviours associated with an overtired and overstimulated puppy!

Behaviours include:

- More over exaggerated puppy biting
- Grabbing of your clothes
- Barking back at you
- More zoomies
- Not listening
- Not in a good mindset to learn or train
- Digging
- Growling (normally when they're tugging against your clothes)

Along with so many more unwanted behaviours!

Things your pup can learn at home BEFORE they are fully vaccinated!

Your puppy is SOOOO CLEVER and will be soaking information up like a sponge – even when you bring them home at 8 weeks old!

Training doesn’t need to start after they are fully vaccinated and allowed out into the big wide world!

Infact, if you start training your pup ASAP at 8 weeks old, your pup will be MILES AHEAD in terms of development compared to a pup who starts training at 12 weeks.

Here is just some of the basic skills that your pup can learn from the time they come home up until they are allowed out on a walk!

- Toilet training in the garden
- Name recognition
- Good associations with a den/crate area
- Confidence building games
- Exposure to sounds, sights, textures and being handled
- What a harness/collar is, and to be happy with these being put on
- Sit to say please
- Eye contact
- Swap games with toys
- Sit and lie down
- Recall at home
- Basic lead training in the garden

And soooo much more!
