A DIFFICULT POST TO WRITE

We’ve thought long and hard about whether to speak about this today.

We could carry on behind closed doors, but transparency is a key value for us, even if it means making us vulnerable.

We’ve been placed in an impossible situation by a government who we strongly agree had to take action to reduce the number of tragic bite incidents, but who chose to ignore the experts and instead introduced gesture legislation which will have little impact in addressing the underlying causes.

From the 31st of December 2023 it became illegal for us to rehome XL Bullies.

We hoped with all our hearts that responsible owners would do the right thing and register their dogs in order to comply with the legislation and keep their dogs safe.

Sadly, this wasn’t the case for Coconut, a lovely 10-month-old girl who found herself in the pound and wasn’t claimed by her owner.

She has been formally assessed as an XL Bully, which devastatingly meant we had no choice but to euthanise her this morning.

So why are we sharing this tragic news? It’s two-fold.

Firstly, it’s important that the UK Government understand the impact of the ban in real terms. Putting to sleep a young dog like Coconut, who never put a paw wrong, will not keep our communities safe from dog incidents. Clamping down on illegal breeding, better use of dog control notices, collaborative working around responsible dog ownership initiatives, stronger sentencing measures and increased resources for enforcement will.

Forcing caring animal welfare professionals across the rescue and veterinary sector to put to sleep healthy, rehomable dogs will have devastating impact on their mental health and wellbeing.

Our team are truly broken today.

Secondly, it’s vital we share the message that abandoning your XL Bully does not mean that it will be saved by a rescue organisation.

We are bound by the same legislation and cannot rehome them. In the interim, your dog will have to endure the stress of kennels and having to pass with strangers, albeit strangers that care passionately and will do everything they can to make it as peaceful as possible.

We know we have made ourselves vulnerable with this post. There will be some that will direct their anger and frustration at us, rather than those truly responsible for the situation we find ourselves in – the breeders, the irresponsible owners and the government.

We share that anger and frustration but please think carefully before you respond to this post with harsh and unkind words.

We’re hurting with you 💔

❤️☀️HELEN☀️❤️

I am not an XL Bully I am a standard Bully. Unfortunately I might meet the requirements of the XL Bully ban which will mean it will be illegal to rehome me in the new year.

The folks at the hotel cannot cope with the thought of me being put to sleep for doing absolutely nothing wrong in my life apart from being let down by some humans so they have come up with a plan to help me!

➡️I need to find a home before the end of the year. I need a home with the following requirements.

- Adult only.
- Pet free.
- A home with experience of large breed dogs.
- Prepared to register me under the exemption scheme in time for the 31st January deadline and comply with all conditions of the exemption scheme.
- Willing to take out the required 3rd party insurance. (£25 per year)
- Secure garden with 6 foot fencing.
- Own your own home or have written permission to keep a banned breed at the premises if you rent.
- Be prepared to travel to the home for multiple meet and greets with me.

✅What the Rescue Hotel will do to help you.
- Cover the cost of insurance with PetPlan.
- Cover the cost of the exemption fee.
- Cover the cost of 1 session per week at an appropriate secure field that has 6 foot fences and insurance that allows exempted dogs to use the facility. So I can run around unmuzzled and off lead like every dog should have the opportunity to do.
- Cover the cost of a well fitting muzzle and any replacements needed.

In addition (Valleys Dog Behaviour and Training) will donate 2 free 1-2-1 sessions to my new owner.

Please share this post and help me go viral, help me find a loving home and help me stay alive. I want to live, I don’t want to die.

‼️We’re gonna turn the comments off this post, bc an application needs to be submitted if you are interested. You MUST meet all requirements, if you don’t you will be unsuccessful.
‼️We don’t want people to think that she has lots of suitable interest when she hasn’t
‼️It’s no good commenting saying “I’d have her” if no application is submitted
‼️This is prolonging it even more with us finding a SUITABLE application. If you do not meet all of the requirements that Helen needs, YOU ARE UNSUITABLE!!!!!!!!!

Thanks frens x

Here is great information from Debbie Connolly from. My Dog Has Bitten - DDA UK for anyone worried about their XL Bully. Take responsibility & prepare now 🐕🐶

As a starting point, I have created a new infographic to help people to understand what banning the XL Bully can mean for them. Feel free to share.
I have seen alarming posts already saying people have destroyed their dogs, vets are refusing to treat them, dogs dumped.
The law has not changed yet, do not panic.

We are inundated with messages regarding muzzles for XL Bullies. First of all can I say that we are deeply sorry that you are all so worried about your dogs, it seems that the actions of a few are affecting the lives of so many. and it is humbling to see so many of you being proactive.

We do have muzzles that will fit some of the XL Bullies, those with leaner faces will fit the 110 and 107 in the size 6, others will need the Don pare 117 Giant in a Clifford or Digby size.
There is information on The Muzzle Shop website on how to measure and we also help with sizing. Please email us with any queries @ [email protected] as we struggle to keep up with messages on SM.

Isla is a Pitbull and is wearing the 107 size 6.

Yesterday Mickey tried out Bassaleg Dog Walking Fields. What fun he had.
Set in a beautiful location, with wonderful views, very close to Bassaleg, it was easy to find.
The weather was wet, but it didn't make a difference to our fun and relaxing experience.
With their easy booking system, two fields to choose from, very reasonable cost and great set up, we will certainly be visiting again.

It's always a worry when you book a dog friendly holiday. Will the garden be fully enclosed, will the facilities be dog safe, can we relax?
We have just got back from Bierwood lodges where the garden was wonderful, the front porch was safe, and the owners even left some lovely dog biscuits on the welcome tray for the four legged fluffball on their holidogs (along with some delicious home made bara brith for the humans).
We did lots of exploring in Manorbier, including the pretty dog friendly Manorbier Castle which overlooks Manorbier beach.
Of course, a trip to west Wales would not be complete without a trip to Tenby for food, walking and running on the beach.....loads of fun 🏖🐕🐶

Our Story

I have over 11 years of running positive reward based training classes and I have worked in rescue centres and have regularly attended training courses, workshops and seminars to help improve my education in the dog training world, these include; Gwen Bailey, Patricia McConnell, Grisha Stuart and Dr Ian Dunbar, etc. with the last in May 2017 with Chirag Patel. In April 2018 I began studying with the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT), which was fab, a wonderful experience and kept me very busy in the best possible way. At the beginning of 2019 I also past the Pro Dog Trainer course which bought a great deal of fun into my world of dog training.

In 2007 I was very proud to become a qualified Puppy School Tutor, a fab organisation founded and run by an international behaviourist and author Gwen Baily, and I loved every minute of it.

At the end of April 2018, I decided to leave the comfort of Puppy School so that I could build on my experience and continue my journey into the wonderful world of dog training.

I am lucky that I have shared my life with various animals and various breeds and cross breeds of dog, which include, Sally and Kelly the Poodles, my lovely Basil, who was a German Shepherd, Greyhound mix, and my gorgeous Boxer, Buster Boy. I now share my home with a German Shepherd, Border Collie, Pyrenean Mastiff mix, who is a real character. He is fun, loving and full of mischief, tests me every day and he is fab!
