How much exercise does my dog actually need? 🤔 Every dog is unique. The breed, age, size and overall health can help you determine how much exercise they should be getting.

A general guide per breed size is:
Small breeds ➡️ They have moderate exercise needs with a daily walk of 30 minutes.
Medium breeds ➡️ Terriers and hounds require slightly more mental and physical stimulate, so a daily 60 minute walk would be suitable.
Working Breeds ➡️ Sporting, herding and walking breeds require the largest amount of exercise daily. A minimum of 60 minutes of good walking and running will suffice, however its recommend by many trainers, these breeds need around 2 hours of exercise a day. These breeds are highly energetic and intelligent, so need plenty of space to be active.
Large breeds ➡️ Although the bigger breeds like the Newfoundland, Great Dane or St Bernard have such large frames to carry around, it is important to still to keep their joints active and bones strong as well as managing their weight. A 60 minute walk is perfect for them.

Going out in the cold is all about being prepared, not only in what we wear, but also in knowing what dangers could lie ahead and how to avoid them. 🌨

Anti-Freeze: Antifreeze can be extremely dangerous to dogs, so if you think your dog has licked, drank or been in contact with antifreeze, contact your vet immediately. ❄️

Hypothermia: Very low temperatures and cold winds can quickly reduce your dog’s body temperature. You may want to consider buying a well fitting coat to keep them nice and toasty! 🔥

Frostbite: Ice and snow can stick to the fur between their pads and ball-up. Not only could this be uncomfortable for your dog, but it can increases the risk of frostbite.⛄️

Frozen Water: Sharp ice could cut their paws, they could slip over and hurt themselves or they could fall through the ice.💧

Road Grit and Salt: Icey pavements can be slippery for both you and your dog, so take extra care! Grit contains salt and other chemicals that can cause irritation when in the paws.🐾

Darker Evenings: Keep safe by wearing reflective clothing, collars or light up leads. Try to walk earlier in the day, or book a dog walker to help you out!🌙

Arthritis: Signs of arthritis can get worse in colder temperatures. If you are worried about these signs and if your dog is experiencing any pain, contact your vet.💊

Weight Gain or Loss: We are often less active in the cold wet weather and darker evenings. Keep an eye on their weight, you may need to tweak their diet to suit any loss of calories.🍴

If you are worried about your dogs health, always contact your vet immediately.🏥
