When the emphasis is on controlling a dog's behaviour and there's no emotional room for autonomy and expression, feelings of safety are lost.
Building connection and a mutually respectful relationship fosters trust.
A dog which feels safe to express itself and isn't overcorrected is less likely to be unpredictable.

This lovely little pup came in for his first health check at the vets yesterday.
He was really nervous on arrival, clinging by his human’s legs, tail tucked tight under, not wanting to explore the toys and sniffs I d put out.

He s been living with his humans a few weeks and they said at home he’s confident and playful and exploratory.

So we gave him time, allowed him to investigate, find some treats, try out the baby scales by himself - no pressure.
And by the end of twenty minutes and a check over and a vaccination (given whilst he enjoyed a lickimat so he didn’t even notice) he was nibbling my ears, playing with the toys and had that puppy sparkle in his eyes.

What I found particularly fascinating was the response of a work experience student we had with us.
They took time yesterday to ask questions about the way I interact with patients and to highlight the differences between her other vet consultation experiences and seeing mine.
They perfectly described the difference between a patient focused approach and a task orientated approach.

I am really excited to be speaking at the London Vet Show on behalf of Pet Remedy this year about emotional wellbeing and fear reduction in our vet patients.
Understand Animals has some fantastic collaborations planned with organisations that promote a fear reduced approach to vet practice - I m really excited for this. For me, it’s so important.

Dogs! They inspire me each and every day to be a better human. How does your dog positively influence you to aim that little higher and do a little better each day. 🐾 💗 💙 🐾

A lot is talked about positive reinforcement...do we know what that means for our dogs? Observe your dog and truly get to know what 'lights up' the world he/she lives in. Yes', sometimes it's food rewards..but that's not the whole story. I'm interested to know what is a positive reward or reinforcement for your dog. I look forward to reading your list 🐾 🐾 😊

I love how my dog students borrow a smart phone and send me a video clip. Here's a pretty little girl enjoying the choice afforded when a long line ( 5meter lead)is used. Used well it can increase connection which can deepen and enrich the relationship between dog and owner.

Look at this little girl doing her best to pick out the words she recognises. All the names of her doggy friends. The tilt of the head = curiosity. (Canine body language and Calming Signals) 🐾 🐾

Have a pawfect Christmas all. Remember to provide a quiet space for your dog to choose to retreat to as the Christmas noise and busy excitement rises. What's fun for humans can be 'over threshold'. For your dog. Space, choice, time to process and don't forget the all important routine to help your dog to predict what will happen in his day 🐾 🐾

Ripping and tearing...a natural behaviour which can enrich your dog's day. If you can't provide the 'real' thing a cardboard box can hit the sweet spot for your dog. Always monitor for safety. 🐾 🐾

Nose work with a challenge. Liver paste in a few tiny amounts pressed into tree bark and at differing heights can provide nose work with coordination, brain development and the intrinsic satisfaction of independent achievement 👌 🐾 'go find'!

Autumn 🍂 the environment is prime for some simple scent work to stimulate your dog's brain and harness natural abilities. Dogs are extremely sensory motivated and in general require much more sensory enriched environments than a house can provide. Maximise the potential of those walks with nosework. A simple start could be a tiny food treat dropped into freshly fallen leaves and allow time for exploration 🍁

Without communication..there is no relationship. Without respect there is no love. Without trust where is the way forward?
