Widget's Farm Run by a qualified animal behaviourist, Widget's Farm is a dedicated pet behaviour, training and rehab centre set in 14 acres in Standerwick.

Widget's Farm is over 14 acres of lovely countryside with ample secure space dedicated to dog training, rehab and secure field hire. Our training approach is to use learning theory to motivate and reward animals for the desired behaviours, and to change their negative view of a situation where one exists. We end up with happy, healthy dogs which learn to cope with stress and make better choices. A

nna, Widget's human, has an MSc in Clinical Animal Behaviour from Lincoln University, and is a member of a number of professional training and behaviour organisations. She also undertakes regular CPD to ensure Widget's Farm always provides the most up to date science-based training. We are also fully insured and staff are qualified in first aid. Located on the Somerset / Wiltshire border, we cover Frome, Bath, Trowbridge, Bradford-on-Avon, Shepton Mallet and the surrounding areas.

It's Day 20 of the Widget's Pawvent Calendar - and the one where Sonny goes on the school run on the last day of school before Christmas 🎄!

Sonny already has some good understanding of little people, as he lives with two gentle little girls who know not to pick him up and to interact only when he comes to them. But we still want to take new interactions gently, so he learns to trust that adults and children aren't handsy and overwhelming.

One way to help puppies increase confidence, and to save them a potential "ah, isn't he cute" mobbing, is simply to increase space from where people are congregating. Sonny is hanging back from the school gates so as to watch and learn about the children and parents coming and going and this also allows family to manage who he meets.

Christmas holidays Sonny!!!

It's Day 19 of the Widget's Pawvent Calendar - but I can't concentrate because my parcel has gone missing.

Does anyone know this doorway or the naughty thief in the photo? I do wish the delivery drivers wouldn't just hand over parcels to anyone with big brown eyes and a pleading face.

(yes, this is a shameful attempt to join in on all the fun of the many missing parcel posts on the local community pages)

It's Day 17 of the Widget's Pawvent Calendar - and the one where Sonny goes to a carpark.

It's a very fine line between habituating and sensitising a puppy to noises. Habituation involves gradually introducing the potential "trigger" (ie car noise) at a rate where the puppy isn't worried and learns to be "whatever" around traffic. Sensitising occurs when the trigger may have been introduced at an overwhelming rate, and now the animal is concerned about the noise. This can be common in puppies that live on a busy road and so inadvertently exposed too quickly on their early walks.

Sonny has gone to a carpark, rather than a busy road, as traffic noise can be introduced at a more gentle rate - cars move slowly and can be watched with a bit more distance The family can also increase the good vibes with a little treat each time he notices a car.

It's Day 14 of Widget's Pawvent Calendar - and the one where the male human is on puppy class duty!

Sonny has already been in class for a few weeks, but today, a different family member brought him to class. This is really helpful as when training approaches are consistent across the family, progress is faster.

The male human did wonderfully, and Sonny had a great class with lots of new experiences banked in a positive way.

Here, he is learning to step onto and sit on a low platform. Amongst other things, this mimics the weighing scales at the vet.

You smashed it Sonny!

It's Day 13 of Widget's Pawvent Calendar - and the one where Sonny introduces his best friend Freya.

Sonny doesn't live with any other dogs, so it's really important that he has some doggy socials to help develop confidence and practice play

Sonny is already in our puppy class, which gives him lots of managed exposure to unfamiliar dogs (more details to follow), and he is also gradually being introduced to friends and family dogs outside of class.

Freya is a lovely young 4 month goldie, who is another Widgets puppy alumni, and a friend of Sonny's family. The introductions have been gradual, with barriers used first, and now both puppies can be loose together for appropriate play and cuddles.

It's important to take new friendships slowly for the best chance that both dogs will like each other and avoid rough, overwhelming play and tellings off. I suggest avoiding just letting dogs off together but instead use barriers and/or on-lead walks together for gentle introductions.

And if done right, they will be best fwends forever!

Does your dog have a best friend? Do tell us about them.

Day 11 of the Widget's Pawvent Calendar - and the one where Sonny was off to get a cut and blow dry!

Sonny is now able to go onto the floor and one of his recent outings included a hair salon.

He had his carry bag with him which would have added some home scent and so given confidence, and I gather he was very well behaved and just enjoyed pootling about before falling asleep. He also didn't bat an eyelid at the salon noises like the hairdryers (although the regular treats would have helped).

Puppies have an important exposure phase between around 6 and 14 weeks. This is a time where they are more optimistic and good exposure to the world can help reduce worries later on.

Ideally we use this phase to expose our puppies carefully to things that they may have to encounter as an adult. And "carefully" is key here - overwhelming the puppy can have the opposite effect and actually sensitise them to these same triggers. For example, rather than take the puppy to a busy road, we ideally start with taking them to a quiet carpark where the puppy can be off at the side, seeing and hearing cars moving more slowly and at distance.

Sonny has been going out in his carry bag from as soon as he arrived at 8 weeks, so he already has some good exposure built up, but now he will be able to go on the floor and this will add some pressure. Again exposure will be taken carefully and at a rate that doesn't overwhelm him.

Can't wait to see more of Sonny's adventures!

Keeping a dog mentally stimulated will prevent behaviour problems such as barking, being destructive or over-grooming. Let’s beat that boredom!

Day 9 of Widget's Advent Calendar - and Sonny has been busy decorating the house!

He is particularly looking forward to playing with all the shiny balls that the family have kindly attached to the Christmas tree 🎄, and excited that the family has brought one inside to save him having to p*e outside when the weather is bad.

This is for all us that cry inside silently at the "cute" videos of pets where the text or narration completely misses what the animal is actually feeling or doing. (No Sandra, that dog is not rescuing the drowning kitten and there's a reason the video cuts off where it does.)

Anyway, enjoy...

☃️Widget's Pawvent Calendar Day 5 - the one where we get a bit personal and talk about p*eing. 😶

Sonny loves going outside and toileting and the family are following all the basic rules...

- Regular outings particularly after waking and eating.
- Family members being outside with him to help confidence.
- High value treats after toileting outside.
- pairing the act of toileting with a word that will become a cue in the future.
- being calm if there is an accident inside and cleaning up with a biological cleaner.

Sonny also wanted us to mention that there are a few situations where puppies may seem less inclined to toilet outside or even regress and have more accidents indoors. These include, but are not limited to: when it's dark; if they hear a neighbouring dog, or when it's windy / wet / cold. Puppies can feel vulnerable when they toilet so it's not unusual for things to put them off their stride.

Sonny is not showing any worry to toileting in the garden but it wouldn't be odd if he were to have a sudden regression with something like bad weather. If this happens, it will just be a phase, and the family should continue with the basic rules and he will soon become happy with toileting outside again.

Puppies do need to toilet more frequently due to less muscle control when young, but if you are ever worried about frequency of p*eing, particularly if the puppy also gives attention to their groin area, do speak to your vet.
