I am incredibly proud to announce that I have become the worlds first ever guide dog who is able to assist a blind person to drive.

After many months of hard work with my trainers, and then much practice with my blind owner Nathan, I am very excited to announce that I am now fully qualified in guide driving.

This is a brand new skill and a world first for a dog to do and here’s how it works...

1. my blind owner will be behind the wheel the same as anyone else and take full control of the vehicle.
2. I will be safely secured by a seatbelt on the passenger seat, sat upright in order to see the roads and wing mirrors.
3. I have learnt important navigational commands which my dad will hear and react to. I bark once for a left turn, bark twice for a right turn, tap my paw on the dashboard in front of me to speed up and howl to break.
4. I am even able to detect traffic via using my incredibly powerful nose to sniff the air for high volumes of exhaust fumes where stationary traffic will be, and then reroute our journey accordingly. In fact, it has been scientifically proven that my ability to detect traffic is 98% more accurate than popular satellite navigation systems.

I have no doubt that this day will go down in history! The 1st of April 2019, remember the date!

Our eighth Dog of Christmas is Trainee Search Dog Pippa 🐾🐾

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who supports us in every way.

We would also like to remind everyone of the Law regarding theft of Dogs. If you find a lost dog you MUST return them to safety, you are breaking the law if you keep a dog you have found. Please have a heart this Christmas and do the right thing by handing them back somewhere safe.

Sniffer dog fun the Scent Imprint way!

Canine scenting abilities have long been focused to detect the signature odours of objects and substances of interest to us humans and then tell us exactly where to look for them. Items found in this way by ‘sniffer dogs’ has historically included such things as drugs, explosives or (perhaps less threatening) truffles and mushrooms, whilst nowadays allergy alert and medical detection dogs regularly assist individual people through alerting their handlers to diabetes, epilepsy or various forms of cancer. Your pet dog’s nose is capable of similar feats of discrimination so together you can jointly discover the fascinating world of odour detection and travel together to a new universe of scent imprint activities!

Detection Dogs England are pleased to be able in to offer structured training based on the system developed and used highly successfully in The Netherlands by Scent Imprint for Dogs. This technique has already been used to train highly effective operational detection dogs in critical disciplines as diverse as detecting illegal drugs, concealed explosives, contraband to***co, wildlife poaching prevention and animal smuggling detection. Our Instructors have been certified at Level 1 and 2 to instruct by Scent Imprint for Dogs and we were founder members of the European scent dog instructors’ group Chiens de Détection. It is on this foundation that we are offering workshops to pet dog owners who wish to unleash the power of their dog’s nose. We believe that through learning a new skill together you not only deepen your existing bond with your dog but also gain further insight into their world.

Any breed or type of dog can learn through scent imprinting to detect a specific odour in a very short period of time and then to indicate it. Scent imprinting is largely a mental activity for the dog rather than a physical one and for that reason it has been shown the concentration required will calm over-active dogs making them focus on a task whilst conversely building the confidence of shy or retiring dogs. As its requires less physical stamina it is highly effective in maintaining intellectual well-being and health in older or less mobile dogs, for example those with arthritis. The focus and mental activity required of a scent dog means he or she invariably sleeps well after a scent imprint training session! Each Dog and handler team work alone in our workshops so dogs that may react to the presence of other dogs or people can learn in an environment free of distraction.
