Scratch Board
Many many dogs hate having their nails trimmed and just as many owners hate trimming them, usually because they are afraid they will hurt their four legged friend. A much better way to control long nails is to train you rdog to use a scatch board, a cheap but effective and fun peice of equipment. Sumply get a small plank of wood, glue some sandpaper to it and use the dogs 'paw' cue to get them started and get the idea of scratching the board for a treat.
Some great progress being made at classes. Just look at young Roo learning how to go to bed. When Roo first came to classes she was very over excited and found it hard to focus on what her mum was asking for, but with a little bit of patience she has calmed down and is now able to learn and work.
Young Towser getting to grips with see saw. It's all about creating confidence
Very well done to level 3 students Harley and her owner for being able to show off these skills. This is a great example of a behaviour chain, we have sit, stay, recall, emergency stop and recall again, all lovely and calm and all achieved though pure positive reinforcement and clicker training.
Licking is an amazingly underrated activity for dogs. Not only is a great brain game but licking is very relaxing for dogs. Dogs can carry a lot of tension in their face and neck and licking allows them to work through it.
Percy getting the hang of Wait. Self control or impulse control is an essential skill for any dog. Once he has this 100% it can then be transferred to the car.
Fin and Paw
Here is Fin demonstrating paw, and proving to everyone that just because Sit is difficult doesnt mean that you cant do other tricks. With the class programme we use there are alternatives to all the excecises and skills to allow for dogs who find it difficult or uncomfortable to do certain movements.
Paw can also be a very useful skill for all dogs as it allows you opportunity to check their feet and nails if you suspect a problem and is the first step in establishing a nail trimming programme if your dog requires their nails trimmed.
No 'trick' or skill ever sits on its own, they all work together to improve the realtionship between you and your dog.
"lye down" - Pearl
Lovely Pearl showing how to learn lie down. Pearl is currently in foster and has only been attending classes for a couple of weeks but has made great progress.
"Go to bed" - Fin
The amazing Fin demonstrating how to 'go to bed'
Never forget the importance of enrichment. Mental stimulation is just as important as physical exercise
