FROM TODAY, 10th June 2024, compulsory microchipping of pet cats (from 20 weeks of age) has come into effect in England.

Cats Protection – the UK’s biggest cat charity – has led the campaign for compulsory microchipping of pet cats – which has finally now become law.

If your cat still isn’t microchipped, the new law states you'll have 21 days to have your cat microchipped, or you may face a fine of up to £500.

WHY SHOULD I MICROCHIP MY CAT❓
Cats Protection regularly reunites owners with their much-loved cats, and in most cases this is only possible thanks to microchips. No matter how far from home a cat is found, or how long they have been missing, having your cat microchipped gives them the best chance of being returned home safely to you.

JESSIE 🐱

Cats Protection Harrogate recently rehomed kitten Jessie, and we wanted to give you an update on her new fur-ever home!

After living a difficult life as a stray, she was very anxious and nervous - hissing and growling whenever anyone came near - and Jessie had to spend an extended 3 months in foster care before she was ready for rehoming, where she was looked after and nurtured to live her best life. Due to her difficult previous experiences, this was no easy task, but one of our amazing fosterers – Kat – was incredible with her, and she helped transform her life. Thank you for the selfless care you gave to Jessie, Kat 🧡

We carefully chose and assessed her new owner to ensure they were a good match for Jessie, and were very aware of the situation, and that she’d likely need some time, and a lot of patience.

We weren’t sure how long it’d take for Jessie to settle into her new home and to bond with her new family, which is why we were so very pleased to receive the following update from her extremely happy new owner:

“Jessie is so sweet, she's letting me stroke her and give her chin rubs: she headbutts me to carry on if I stop! And for the first time today she has been purring!!! I'm so happy😊”

Jessie is settling in even quicker than we thought she would! We wish her and her new owner the very best 🐱

She also went home with a free catnip toy to play with - thank you to Molly’s Mice 😊

Cats Protection Harrogate is desperately in need of more fosterers to help cats and kittens just like Jessie. Can you offer a safe, temporary home to a cat, to save them from difficult situations? If you can, all expenses are paid for by us: so get in touch with us for more information, and to apply!

31/05/2024

As we’re sure you all know, the next UK General Election will be taking place on Thursday 4 July 2024. This means Cats Protection has now got some exciting news on upcoming legislation we've been campaigning to be introduced!

*PET ABDUCTION BILL NEWS*

Parliament passed some final new laws ahead of the upcoming election, and we’re delighted to share with you the tremendous news that the Pet Abduction Bill has completed its remaining stages in Parliament. For the very first time, this will make cat theft in England and Northern Ireland a specific criminal offence.

This important change recognises the emotional and welfare impact of a cat being stolen and will help to prevent thefts from taking place. Initial government proposals on pet theft didn’t include cats, so it is wonderful that our hard-campaigning efforts have been successful to give cats and dogs the same protections.

*THE CAT MANIFESTO*

The news of a general election also means that a new political agenda will be set and it’s vital that the next UK government prioritises animal welfare.

Cats Protection will be launching The Cat Manifesto, which sets out areas relevant to cat welfare to improve the lives of cats and protect them from harm.

More updates on this, and details on how you can get involved, will be shared soon!

Beloved indoor cat Pepsi escaped when the family was moving home. The worried family let the identibase team know so they could alert local vets and wardens as well as give helpful tips. Thanks to Pepsi's microchip, he was found after two days and reunited with his owners.
‘It was the worst two days of my life not knowing if he was okay. His chip had been scanned at a local vets and they rang me straight away. Thankfully, all details were up to date so he was reunited with no problems.’

🚨Cats Protection Harrogate desperately needs fosterers to offer a SHORT-TERM, loving, safe home to cats & kittens in the Harrogate and Wharfe Valley areas.

You could soon be welcoming – with all costs covered! – a new furry friend into your warm home to cuddle and play with, who will stay with you until they find their forever home with a permanent adopter 🏠🐱

Your generosity could literally save a cat or kitten from being put to sleep by their owner, including due to the cost of living crisis, which sadly does regularly happen now😔

We need to have fosterers available so that we can act quickly to rescue cats and kittens from e.g. an abusive home environment where they’re at risk of danger, or they may have been sleeping outside in the cold and be very poorly, or their owner may have sadly passed away, leaving them all alone.

We provide EVERYTHING you need to foster one of our cats - including food, cat litter, toys and insurance - so it won’t cost you a penny. What’s not to love?!

🚨 **UPDATE: Minnie has now found her forever home! We wish her and her new owner the very best, and thank you to all of you who applied!

We're told that Minnie is around 8 years old.

She was initially abandoned, until she was taken in by a loving lady who she happily lived with for many years. Sadly, her owner has now passed away, so she's without a home 😔

Minnie is a very friendly and affectionate cat who just needs someone to love her as much as her previous owner did, and to provide a safe home for her.

*Help the next cat with an unexpected story!*

Case study: 'Boots'

When eight-year-old Boots arrived at one of our Cats Protection Adoption Centres, the staff could never have guessed at first glance what they would discover when they took a closer look.

Boots’ full-body scan showed that she’d been cruelly shot with an air gun and had 14 pellets in her body. The pellets had narrowly missed her vital organs, spinal cord and brain. She’d been very lucky to survive. Thanks to the x-ray, the vet was able to safely remove as many of the pellets as possible, only leaving the ones that were too dangerous to operate on.

Every year, thousands of cats in Cats Protection’s care need surgeries, either like the one Boots had, or for different kinds of injuries and health conditions.

Next month, microchipping will become compulsory for cats in England 🐱

”After many years of campaigning,...cats in England will finally be given the same protection as dogs when it comes to microchipping. Our branches and centres regularly reunite owners with their much-loved pets, and in most cases this is only possible thanks to microchips. No matter how far from home they are found, or how long they have been missing, if a cat has a microchip there is a good chance that a lost cats will be swiftly returned home.”

Cats Protection has led the campaign for compulsory microchipping of pet cats, and later this year, all pet cats in England must be microchipped by 10 June 2024, and you will be given 21 days to get your cat chipped or face a fine of up to £500 if you don’t comply.

Is your cat microchipped yet? Find out more, including the many benefits, at https://tinyurl.com/htzvxc8w

🚨 JESSIE IS NOW RESERVED! Thank you everyone

Hello!

My name is Jessie and I’m around 8 months old. I came into the care of Cats Protection Harrogate in January after living as a stray in a garden for 4 months! I’ve been neutered and have had my first vaccination, with my second one due and already paid for. I’ve also had my flea and worming treatments.

I’ve been living with one of Cats Protection's amazing fosterers, who has been working very hard to socialise me and get me used to new people. I’m still quite timid, and I don't like sudden movements, but once I get to know you and trust you – which could take some time – I’m a very loveable cat: even if I do say so myself! 😸

My favourite thing to do is to chase balls all around the room, and I really love my cat tree as it’s my safe place, and I’ve asked for this to be rehomed with me as I’m very attached to it. I also love cat treats.

I will need a home with an experienced, patient cat owner who is prepared to give me significant time to settle in and become accustomed to my new surroundings and my new owner.

I’ll need to be the only cat in the house as I have not lived with, or met, other cats or dogs, so I am used to being on my own.

I will also need to be an indoor cat, or have access to a secure garden or catio – as I was a stray, Cats Protection are not sure whether I would wander off and not come back if I am let outside on my own 😼

If you feel you could provide me with my perfect new home: please contact Cats Protection Harrogate for further details, and apply below! ❗️ Applications close May 8th!

Jessie

We received some sad news today, kindly sent to us today (directly quoted) to make all of our followers aware:

On Thursday 18th April [on York Road, not far from Valley Gardens] one of my cats was fatally poisoned with ethylene glycol. I don't think he was deliberately targeted, but it seems unlikely that someone would leave antifreeze lying around accidentally in late April. My best guess is that someone was targeting foxes. I will be reporting to the police, but thought that just in case this is part of a pattern and not an isolated incident it might be helpful for you to know.

🚨If you suspect your cat may be suffering from antifreeze poisoning, you should seek veterinary advice immediately.

Intentional poisoning is an offence under the Animal Welfare Act 2006.

Please be vigilant towards antifreeze poisoning and report anything suspicious to the police and relevant organisation:

Cats Protection Lifeline is our specialist cat fostering service for anyone experiencing domestic abuse.

Last year alone our Lifeline team were able to support over 350 cats and their families to get to safety after experiencing domestic abuse.

And best of all, 201 cats were reunited with their families, with plans being made to safely reunite many more when their owners are ready.

Together, we can help make life better for cats and people: even in the toughest circumstances❤️

With most refuges unable to accept pets, we use our network of dedicated volunteer fosterers to provide temporary homes to cats whose families are fleeing domestic abuse. That gives families the chance to get to safety, knowing they will be together again soon.

Find out more below, and watch the emotional journey of Ava and her pet cat, Mr Biggles, whose story – based on cases supported by our Lifeline team – has been nominated for a Smiley Charity Film Award:

Happy Easter everyone! Use the following tips to ensure your cat is happy, safe and stress-free during Easter celebrations! 🪺🐣

🐱GOING AWAY
If you’re planning to use the bank holidays for an extended weekend break, we wouldn’t recommend taking your cat with you. Cats are generally very stressed by travelling and without the familiar smells of their home territory, can become disorientated in a new environment. This also means they are more likely to get lost.

So instead, ensure you’ve made arrangements for your cat while you’re away; don’t let them fend for themselves. You could arrange for a trusted friend or cat sitter, preferably that your cat is familiar with, to feed, groom and play with your cat while you’re on holiday.

🐱WELCOMING VISITORS
Unfamiliar people and noisy children visiting the home can be very stressful for cats. Try to stick to your cat’s normal routine as much as you can.

Provide your cat with a quiet place to retreat to where they will not be disturbed. Ensure it contains their resources, such as a litter tray, an area for food and a separate area for water, a scratch post, toys and somewhere to sleep or hide. Cats like elevated places to hide, such as shelving or on top of a wardrobe, to make them feel safe and secure. Ensure they can access these, for example by placing a chair nearby.

🐱EASTER TREATS
A number of foods that we typically find in the home at Easter, such as chocolate eggs and raisins in hot cross buns are toxic to cats, so keep them out of reach, stored in sealed containers or closed cupboards. Keep Easter egg or basket packaging and wrapping out of the way as ingesting can be dangerous.

Family cats. Incredible cats. Senior cats. Connected cats. At Cats Protection, we're here for all cats. That's why we're celebrating the UK's favourite cats at this year's National Cat Awards.

The winner of each cat category will be selected by public vote and then be in the running to be chosen as National Cat of the Year 2024 by a panel of judges. The Vet of the Year 2024 winner will be chosen by a panel of cat experts.

Do you have a cat that you’d like to enter? Entries are open until noon on 26 March 2024, so act fast!*
