HAVE YOU PREPARED YOUR PUPPY FOR A TRIP TO THE VET?

We know at some point that we will have to take our puppies to the vet, but we don’t often spend enough time preparing them for what can be a scary experience that may create a negative association for life. Set your puppy up for successful visits to the vet by:-

- Taking them along when they are fit and well.

- Asking the receptionist, nurse or vet to give your puppy a treat and some fuss (if your puppy enjoys being made a fuss of).

- Allowing your puppy to sniff outside and inside the surgery if appropriate to do so (ask first).

Throughout their life your puppy is going to need vaccinations, have their temperature taken, step onto the weighing scales, have their ears and mouth checked, stand to be examined … often by strange new people.

By regularly visiting the vet when your puppy is healthy, when the “scary” stuff happens, the positive visits can help outweigh the negative ones.

Handling is one of the topics we cover as part of our six-week Puppy School course. My next classes start on Saturday 10th August and Saturday 5th October.

DOES YOUR PUPPY HAVE A ROOM FULL OF TOYS BUT KEEPS TAKING THINGS YOU DON'T WANT THEM TO HAVE?

First, let’s look at why puppies might do this?

Puppies explore with their mouths. If it’s novel and within reach, they will pick it up.

They simply don’t know that it doesn’t belong to them.

Puppies have a short attention span and soon get bored with their toys.

It might be a way of getting you to chase them which is a fun game!

They might be teething and trying to find something to chew on that provides relief.

What can be done about it?

Put proper management in place to prevent the behaviour: install baby gates, close doors, put things out of your puppy’s reach.

Supervise so that you can redirect your puppy onto a toy or chew.

Rotate toys instead of leaving them out so that they retain their novelty.

Have a variety of toys that are hard and soft to satisfy chewing needs when teething.

Ensure your puppy is getting sufficient mental and physical stimulation through short sessions of appropriate play, training and exercise throughout the day.

Provide a sensory area to encourage chewing, sniffing and licking.

Tap into your puppy’s sense of curiosity by teaching them to search for a portion of their daily food allowance or provide food puzzle toys.

Instead of chasing your puppy, teach them to swap items for a tasty treat or another toy.

Remember that your puppy is not being naughty, they are just trying to satisfy a need.

BEHAVIOUR THAT IS REWARDED WILL BE REPEATED

It makes sense that if your dog finds something rewarding, they will continue to do it. So, the more you reward the behaviours you like, the more your dog will offer the desired behaviours.

This week, pick one behaviour you like and reward it generously using food, praise or a game with a toy.

Remember that practice makes perfect. The longer your dog has been practicing an unwanted behaviour, the more you will need to show them that the new behaviour is your preferred option. Be patient and watch your dog’s behaviour change.
