Throughout these years Sarah and a team of Instructors and assistants have run weekly classes in Essex and Suffolk teaching obedience, life skills and guiding lots and lots of wonderful dogs and their owners through the Kennel Club Good Citizen Awards . We have enjoyed every minute but 2021 heralds an exciting change and Chippers is now focusing solely on bringing you fun Agility for Pet Dogs and the increasingly popular pastime and sport of Scentwork.

Do you live in or around Haverhill with time to spare on a Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday afternoon to volunteer to walk this lovely dog? He is much loved and his owner has to be away from the home on those days from mid morning to late afternoon/early evening.
We have had a rota of volunteers in the past but they are busy and not able to commit just now, so we are looking for more volunteers who would like to regularly help this sweet dog to get out in the afternoons on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Please message, or email [email protected], or complete a form on our website or ring 01284 335351.

Thank you. He, his owner and all of us at Our Special Friends would be thrilled to have your help.

Thank you

We have recently seen a suspected case of blue-green algae poisoning at our Haverhill practice. The dog had recently been walked in West Town Park (The flood plain opposite Sainsbury's, also known as the Meldham Washlands) and had drunk from some water there.

Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) is extremely poisonous to dogs, and can cause liver failure which can sadly be fatal. It grows in stagnant water and can have a variety of different appearances, including:
➡ A blue-green sheen
➡ Green water ("Pea soup" appearance)
➡ Green streaks
➡ Green flakes
➡ A foamy "scum" on the surface of the water.

Many other kinds of algae also grow in our ponds and rivers, and sadly it is not possible to tell just from looking whether the algae is poisonous or not.

⛔️DO NOT LET YOUR DOG NEAR PONDS OR RIVERS WHERE ALGAE IS GROWING ⛔️

Symptoms can come on as soon as 15 minutes after drinking or swimming in contaminated water, but often take a few hours to appear. They include:
➡ Vomiting
➡ Diarrhoea
➡ Lethargy (quietness)
➡ Weakness
➡ Wobbliness
➡ Confusion
➡ Seizures

If you think your dog may have been exposed to blue-green algae, then you should take them straight to a vet. There is no specific antidote, but your vet can make them vomit to empty as much of the algae out of their stomach as possible, and then run blood tests to see if their liver has been affected. If there are signs of liver damage, your dog will need to be hospitalised for treatment.

Throughout Crufts all money raised by The Kennel Club Charitable Trust is being ringfenced for its Ukraine appeal, to help those animals and their owners who are in dire need.

The Kennel Club and The Kennel Club Charitable Trust have given a starting fund of £50,000 and people can donate here kennelclubcharitabletrust.org/support-dogs/Ukraine

The money will be donated to the international dog organisation the FCI (Federation Cynologique Internationale), which will support those who are in Ukraine and who have fled to neighbouring countries, via its network of Kennel Clubs.

Changes in behaviour, refusal to walk on slippery floors, reluctance to jump in the car and maybe not wanting to walk like they used to... deliberate disobedience or perhaps something else?

If your dog has changed behaviour, maybe they have stopped wanting to do something they have always enjoyed, or maybe they arent quite their normal happy self? It is a good time to ask why they are behaving this way and seek further help. Dogs cant tell us when they are uncomfortable, we have to look for the signs! Our dogs arent being deliberatley difficult, they need our support.

Learn to look beyond the behaviour and always ask why!

Please share and hopefully we can help educate more dog owners and help even more dogs!

Thankyou Angela Day for this good post

The gritters are out guys and many of us know we should wash our dogs paws after a walk close to a gritted road.
But what I'm hearing from our gritters is that some owners forget to shield their dog's face when a gritter passes.
Please turn your dog's head away from a gritting truck as they pass.

Grit does not contain antifreeze.
Grit is Rock salt.

Born to Run urges pet-owners to be cautious when grit is being spread on roads, as rock salt can be toxic to dogs and cats if they lick it from their paws or fur.
Ingestion can cause a high, blood sodium concentration resulting in thirst, vomiting, lethargy, and in severe cases kidney damage.

This is a great infographic by Every Dog Behavior

We really do need to stop expecting all dogs to be friendly goofballs, and even more importantly stop demonising those that aren't!
