Eddie came in to see us as he had an unfortunate incident with a fish tackle box and he had swallowed a fish hook that had got stuck in his throat. Our vet Eileen had an initial look while Eddie was under general anesthetic and struggled to see the hook as it seemed quite far down his oesophagus. X-rays were recommended and these confirmed that the hook was caught quite far down.
-
As it was quite difficult to reach, Eileen tried a method that involved threading the fishing wire through a tube and then gently pushing the fish hook loose. This was successful and Eddie made a speedy recovery!

We are looking for a new vet to join our team in Abbey Vets in South Wales.
What is special about us?
We have 15 vets spread across 4 sites in the beautiful South Wales region. The Brecon Beacons is on our doorstep and our main site in Abergavenny is known as a “foodie” town with amazing countryside on our doorstep. We would describe ourselves as a “GP Plus” practice, with certificate holders in surgery, medicine and imaging. We also have visiting cardiology and ultrasound specialists. We have a high case load of orthopaedic and general surgery work, and the clinical freedom to work up cases to a high standard, meaning we are able to see cases through ourselves. We outsource our out of hours, but keep our own in-patients Monday-Saturday and have 24 hour on site nursing, with a vet on call to the nurse only. We believe this gives our team the “best of both worlds” – our client and patient care remains high but we have a better work/life balance by outsourcing any new emergencies.
We have 15 minute consults as standard, with double appointments for things like euthanasia, bloods etc. Our vets have 2 hours of protected administration time in their diary, for phone calls, case research, lab follow ups or procedures, along with an hour lunch break. We have brand new ultrasound, x-ray, dental x-ray and multiparameter monitoring, and are excited to develop the practices further in the near future. At the end of consults we have a built in “buffer” to tidy up any loose ends for the day, the reality of which means leaving early is our normal.
We have a fantastic team, we are experienced with supporting less experienced team members including new graduates, and developing our team in further skills or qualifications. We foster a collaborative approach to our cases, encourage questions and work as a team to help our patients. We consider ourselves to be family friendly, with our team being able to find that balance between work and family life. We have supported vets returning after a career break to re-build their confidence and skill set, as well as supporting new grads through GDP mentorship, and senior vets through certificates.
Please see our advert below, and some pictures from our typical lunch breaks! (Please note spaniel ownership is encouraged but not required!)

If your see your cat kneading during cuddles or while they are around you, it may indicate their connection from the secure bond with their mother to the bond they share with you. - Watch Bruce and Gus, one of our RVN’s Zoe’s kittens, show us how it is done!
