Monty is a Giant Schnauzer with cropped ears and a docked tail who was awarded Best in Show in a US dog show this week 👉 https://ow.ly/6zfW50UZpg0

While or tail docking sadly remain acceptable practices in many countries abroad, they’re illegal in the UK. Dogs with cropped ears have been banned from dog shows in the UK for well over 100 years. Dogs with docked tails are banned too.

⚠️ However, a legal loophole still allows the import of dogs with such mutilations into the UK.

That’s why we are lobbying for the to be passed as soon as possible to .

You can help clamp down on the import of animals with harmful mutilations. Download our template letter and send it to your local MP, urging them to support the Animal Welfare (Import of Dogs, Cats & Ferrets) Bill as it progresses through Parliament 👉 https://ow.ly/nb6z50UZqs4

We have been made aware that some veterinary practices in North Yorkshire have received a letter from us stating they should no longer take in stray dogs.

This letter was sent in error, and we are really sorry for any concern it has caused.

As the local authority, we have a statutory duty to collect stray dogs and at no stage was there a proposal to stop doing this. The letters should not have been drafted or issued and we are investigating this.

We have sent a correction to the practices and can categorically confirm vets can accept stray dogs, or alternatively people can report a stray dog online at https://www.northyorks.gov.uk/environment-and-neighbourhoods/animals/dogs/lost-or-stray-dogs or call us on 0300 131 2 131.

We sincerely apologise for this mistake and are grateful for your help in sharing this information.

POULTRY AND CAPTIVE BIRD KEEPERS:

In response to the increase in cases across England and new findings in wild birds, an Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) with mandatory biosecurity measures is being put in place and will come into force across all of England and Scotland from noon on Saturday 25 January 2025.

In addition, the regional Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) with mandatory housing and biosecurity measures is being extended to include the unitary authorities of North Yorkshire and York and a new area covering Shropshire from 00:01 on Monday 27 January.

The new AIPZ with mandatory housing and biosecurity measures will then cover:

North Yorkshire (added)
York (added)
Shropshire (added)
The East Riding of Yorkshire
The City of Kingston upon Hull
Lincolnshire
Norfolk
Suffolk.
All bird keepers in these areas must keep their birds housed to protect them from bird flu. This applies to pet birds, commercial flocks and just a few birds in a backyard flock.

All bird keepers should remain vigilant and follow these housing and stringent biosecurity measures, in addition to following any Protection/Surveillance Zone restrictions in their area, to prevent future outbreaks.

Check the avian influenza interactive map (below) to see where restrictions are in place.

Are you SURE that your online puppy advert is how it seems?

In 2020, Dogs Trust found that 14% of all adverts reviewed were for imported puppies (29% in England), at least 18% of the imported puppies were confirmed by the seller as being under the minimum 15 weeks of age.

Although none of the original advert text mentioned that the puppy was an import, many of the sellers were happy to share that the puppies had been imported when questioned further, with some even using this as a mark of quality. When Dogs Trust carried out similar research two years ago (2018), sellers were reluctant to say if
puppies had been imported.

However, whilst it is legal to import puppies to sell in the UK, this is only the case if they are correctly imported under the commercial movement legislation (the Balai
Directive). It is likely that many of the puppies found for sale online had been imported on the Pet Travel Scheme which is designed for family pets. Importing puppies for sale under this legislation is illegal and importers are also evading HMRC by choosing this route.

Shockingly, in many cases, the puppies being advertised for sale were too young to have been imported legally under the Pet Travel Scheme or Balai Directive. This has worrying implications for puppies’ welfare and for the control of disease.

To travel to Great Britain from countries within the EU a puppy must be a minimum of 15 weeks of age. This means that the puppy receives a rabies vaccine at a minimum of 12 weeks of age, followed by a 21 day wait period after the vaccination date. For a puppy from an unlisted Third Country, such as Serbia, to comply with EU pet travel rules they must be at least seven months of age on arrival. This allows for the additional requirement of a rabies blood (titre) test to be carried out not less than 30 days after vaccination and three months before the date of travel to an EU country.

The presence of a passport and on a few occasions a health certificate from a vet in the country of origin was used by sellers to give the impression of legitimacy. Closer examination of the paperwork often revealed anomalies such as dates of birth not matching the story being told, but it is likely that some buyers might not
notice this anomaly!

Please, research thoroughly into the animals you are buying on on-line adverts - they may not be as they seem and we MUST stop supporting the purchase of low welfare puppies.

We aim to keep your pets as stress free as possible when they are in the clinic for procedures. Cats are in warm kennels with cat cubes for them to hide in if they want. They are kept away from the dog kennels so they can't hear them if they bark. We also have special plugs in diffusers to help keep them calm. Look how chilled out this little lad was when he was in recently.
