In Puppy Lifeskills this week we looked at an activity that builds your dog’s confidence, boosts your bond, exercises their brain and body, and is a highly motivating reward.
Have you guessed what it is yet? 👀
It's playing with your dog! 🤩
Here are 5 reasons to play with your dog more:
🌟 Build confidence
🌟 Boost the bond with your dog
🌟 Brilliant exercise
🌟 Mentally stimulating
🌟 Highly motivating (so it can be used as a high-value reward during training)
There’s a clear link between play and a dog’s instinctual urges and behaviour. All dogs are different and some have a stronger play drive than others.
We highly recommend Tug-E-Nuff toys. They're strong and tough, even for the large breeds. They have a great variety to suit your dog's preference.

Recently been to our puppy class? Fancy doing more with your young dog then come and join us. We have put on a new Junior Lifeskills class starting now in March, with rest weeks to allow for the Easter holidays!!
We look at ways of making your dog want to come back when called. Giving your dog freedom to run whilst under control is very important as a young adolescent dog. Let us help nail that recall!

Teaching your dog to touch your hand can help them understand that human hands are great! Target training can help prepare your dog for lots of life events, such as going to the vets and preparing them for being groomed. It's a way to move your dog around without touching them, picking them up or putting them into positions, as you can guide your dog into them. This means they can trust you, and your hands are always seen as good things.
It's also great for getting your dog to focus on you rather than distractions, such as squirrels, other dogs or joggers, is essential when you're out and about. A great recall tool!
We are now taking bookings for classes starting late February. Just book online now!

Well done to our Best of Both gradutes.
Over the 4 week mini course they have taken the time to consider why or what their dog is pulling for.
They have worked hard on the relationship they have with their dog and built up a history of reinforcing certain behaviours from them.
This course is running again in March. We will show you how to be really generous and pay all the behaviours you want from your dog e.g. check ins and lots of engagement.
Loose lead walking is a package of behaviours but with engagement games we will show you how to have fun with your dog.
We also look at fun ways to make your dog want to come back when called. Recall skills are essential to allow your dog off lead time!

It's great to see everyone back in class this week. Here are our Juniors learning about Mat Training. We use a bed or a mat to teach the dogs about positive boundaries - we want their bed to be a place of comfort and positive feelings so that we can utilise it in situations such as family mealtimes, when visitors come, when the doorbell rings etc.

One of our trainers is going back to school with her young dog this week. It's always good to revisit your dog's basic training. Whether you revisit an old cue or teach a new one. Joanne is working on Gunnar's Sit and Wait cue by adding in movement and a distraction on the floor 🎓 ✔️ 🐶

Getting a new puppy?
Teaching a puppy their name can seem like the last thing on your list when you get a new dog. But it’s very important, and rewarding, for you both. After all, in their first few days with you, everything your puppy thought they knew about the world has completely changed. The home they knew for their first few weeks is gone and, in most cases, even the name they were given at birth has been replaced with something new.
It's your job to educate your puppy so they’ll be successful in your home and in the world in general. It’s a tall order and sometimes an overwhelming one. Where does a new puppy parent start?
How about at the beginning? Give your pup a name and teach them to respond to it. It’s fun, it’s not too difficult, and it will help you train your puppy in the future.
Teaching a puppy their name: how to start
The easiest way to teach your dog how to respond to their new name is by using the obviously titled “name game.” This simple training exercise is a great way to start communicating with your pup and building a foundation for more advanced training skills.
Here’s how to play the name game:
😎Say your pup’s name in a happy tone of voice (only once, be patient).
🌞When your dog turns towards the sound, mark the moment with the word “Yes!”
😎Reward your dog with a treat, a quick tug session, or with praise and affection.
🌞Repeat, repeat, repeat.
Yup, it’s pretty much that easy. But, you say, if my dog doesn’t know their name yet are they really going to turn towards me when they hear it? Sometimes they will and sometimes they won’t. For example, if your dog is distracted when you say their name, they’re less likely to turn towards you. So just like Joanne, one of our dog trainers, start in your home or garden where its quiet.

We are often asked, when is the best time to start training my puppy. Our answer is always the same, "as soon as you pick them up". At such a young age they are constantly learning and your role is to channel this desire to learn, so that you both enjoy a fulfilled life together.
They would have already learned a lot from their mother and siblings but you are now taking over and they have to learn to fit in with your lifestyle. Some early training will include: 🐾toilet training
🐾name recognition
🐾settling in a crate or bed
🐾short car rides
🐾exploring new places and experiences (even though they will not be fully vaccinated, you can still carry them).
Start to work out your puppies personality. If they appear to be a little sensitive and hesitant, take things slowly. Try to make all new associations, positive ones.
Some extra tips when training, reward your pup when they are doing something you like and ignore any unwanted behaviours.
Keep training sessions short, 2-3 minutes and be patient.
The class timetable is up for September whixh is perfect if your puppy is arriving over the summer.
