It’s expected to hit 28 degrees in parts of England today … time for resharing important info to keep your dog safe.

It is HOT out today!! We were back at the car after a quiet wander by 7 30am and both our dogs were feeling the heat more than I would have intended.

The humidity is 85% which is definitely having an effect on heat perception here in the UK

It’s likely too hot in many areas for dogs to be safely exercising today. Some tips to stay safe and cool:

*you don’t need to walk your dog Collect some sniffs on a walk by yourself - pick up some leaves, some sticks, bits of loose soil, perhaps some sheep fleece, animal hair on fencing etc … and bring it home and place in a box or two or on some dog towels or in a garden area, and let them sniff. Or pop to a car boot sale, a friends, a neighbours and get a few old baby toys, some worn clothing, other dogs toys or harnesses etc and bring them home for an investigation

*do a toy or sniffs or treat (or combo) search … by placing little tastes or scents in places found the house or garden and let your dog treasure trail at home

*biscuit bob - washing up bowl, bucket, paddling pool etc with water and float some kibble amongst some floating toys and let them enjoy getting them out (do this when they re not hungry to avoid frustration if they re not experienced bobbers!)

*make some cool pastes - you can soak kibble and make a mash, or add water to meat foods, or add flour and water to herbal tea or marmite or peanut butter or yoghurt and place in fridge. Once cool, put smears in a muffin tray or on different plates or bowls and let them investigate the different cool flavours

*keep the curtains / blinds closed!! Less sun in = less heat in. Consider setting up a fan if you don’t get much breeze in the hottest parts of the day

*damp some dog towels and place in fridge or freezer then lay them out in the hottest parts of the day to see if your dogs would like to lie on them

*avoid water play eg hosing, water pistols etc as whilst the dog gets wet, the exercise intensity is creating much muscle heat so they ll be hotter after, not cooler. Also grabbing too much water can cause health issues like low sodium if excessive, which can be really dangerous

*take care with natural swimming - seems a good idea but can be hot getting there and back and again, creates a lot of muscle heat for many dogs to recover from. Also HUGE issues at the moment with blue green algae in many places of the UK which is extremely toxic to dogs if swallowed

*have different sounds on the TV or speakers throughout the day - plenty of relaxing waterfall sounds, rainforest sounds, farm yard noises, classical music, pop / rock and other genres to enjoy … or audio books too!!

Plenty of cool, calm options to have a chilled out but interesting day! Stay cool and safe

(And don’t forget horses / rabbits/ cats / other furries too … give shade, give choice … )

A strong statement......I totally agree. I walk my young dog on a 3m lead. It can be short when needed for safety by the road but can allow my dog to move naturally. It also allows him to stop and sniff where he wants, after all it is his walk!l 🐾🐕

If you need help with loose lead walking email us [email protected] we can tailor the sessions to meet you and your dog's needs.

How are you keeping your dog cool?

Phew it's so warm at the moment. How are you keeping your dog's cool?

Here's Moose, with his cool coat on.

The Cool Coat will make your dog feel cool, not wet. You can test this by putting your hand beneath the dog's coat and feeling how cool he feels compared to any part of his coat that is exposed to the sun or heat for a period of time.

As the heat of the day slowly evaporates the moisture from the Cool-Coat, this in turn draws the heat out of the dogs body. Leaving him feeling far cooler than before.

Share and tag us in with us how you are keeping your dog cool in this weather.

Well done to our latest Puppy Lifeskills graduates. They have thoroughly enjoyed the start of their dog training journey!

They have learned how to get their puppies to listen to them, practice coming when called, walk nicely on a lead and so much more!

The owners have supported their pups over the last 6 weeks by learning how to communicate clearly with them. They have tried different enrichment games to keep their young dogs busy and had loads of fun in class!

Do you have a young dog and would like to learn the foundations? September's classes are getting full, so we have added more classes on our website now. Book online

Here is a game you can play indoors whilst the weather is so hot!

Hide And Seek
It isn’t just young children who love a game of hide and seek! Playing it with your dog can be a great way to teach recall and your dog will love the thrill of finding you.

How to play: Start by asking your dog to ‘stay’ before moving into another room and hiding with your tug toy (don’t make it too difficult at first – try ducking behind the sofa or behind a curtain). Then call your dog and wait for them to seek you out. When they do, reward them with a game of tug.

Click on the link to discover 3 more games you and your dog can play with a tug toy.

In Puppy Lifeskills last week we looked at an activity that builds your dog’s confidence, boosts your bond, exercises their brain and body, and is a highly motivating reward.
Have you guessed what it is yet? 👀

It's playing with your dog! 🤩

Here are 5 reasons to play with your dog more:
🌟 Build confidence
🌟 Boost the bond with your dog
🌟 Brilliant exercise
🌟 Mentally stimulating
🌟 Highly motivating (so it can be used as a high-value reward during training)

There’s a clear link between play and a dog’s instinctual urges and behaviour. All dogs are different and some have a stronger play drive than others.

We highly recommend Tug-E-Nuff toys. They're strong and tough, even for the large breeds. They have a great variety to suit your dog's preference.

What did you expect? 🤷‍♀️

Puppies are usually homed at 8 weeks old. 8 WEEKS old. They are literal baby dogs, with no experience of anything outside of what their breeder has provided (which varies massively depending on the quality of the breeder).

A puppy is NOT going to be able to (not an exhaustive list...):
- walk nicely on lead
- show self control in exciting situations prior being taught
- be clean in the house consistently
- ignore your shoes laying around
- be calm
- understand human language

They ARE going to:
- bite you/your children/visitors
- Wee and Poo in the house (particularly when left unsupervised for extended periods of time)
- pull on lead because dogs are not born with understanding the concept of the lead
- need a lot of your time and effort put into training and management
- find things to chew
- dig in the garden
- be over excitable with your existing pets
- be worried in some situations
- get zoomies

We cannot expect a baby dog to fit into our lives straight away. It takes time, effort, patience, consistency, and a sense of humour to rear a puppy. So many people believe puppies need to, at 8-12 weeks old, 'stop biting/pulling on the lead/chewing/jumping up at visitors'.

👉We need to start thinking 'how do i help my puppy become the adult dog i'd like in the future'.

Puppies need time to develop physically, mentally, and nurture and develop skills with us helping them do so. It's not going to happen overnight.

It's unrealistic, and we need to start thinking about things from the puppies perspective.

Are you looking for Puppy classes? Next week in our Puppy Lifeskills classes we are going to talk about how to help your young dog to switch off. It's a very important skill and should be at the top of your Puppy's socialization.

Socialization for your young dog is about learning different social skills and how to interact with people and dogs appropriately in lots of situations, such as:
* Learning to switch off in different places
* Learning to ignore people & dogs
* Learning how to be calm
* Learning how to play appropriately
* Learning how to be handled & groomed

Book your space on our Puppy Lifeskills course and we will help you understand what you need to focus on with your puppy and will decrease the chances of behavioural issues later down the line.

Raising a puppy is a big responsibility. We all have high expectations of the young pup but in reality, its all about management and prevention!

Please if you are struggling right now with your little "land shark" check how many hours sleep your young pup is getting. After 2 to 3 hours this little man was encouraged to chill out and sleep!

If you need support with your new puppy please reach out to us.
