Training isn’t just about all the fancy tricks, spins and showing off that you may see on TV or social media.

Most of it is done behind the scenes. Off social media and with no frills. Teaching your dogs how to settle and relax is absolutely paramount to your dogs ability to progress into “fancy” training or off lead work, loose lead walking etc.

If your dog can’t settle in busy environments, if they can’t focus around distractions, if they can’t take treats or toys from us, then they certainly can’t listen or learn new skills.

Teaching settle is easy and generally involves a lot of sitting around, relaxing, coffee drinking at the park in my case!!!

There is loads of ways to teach your dogs to relax and focus. You could use a place or mat, you could use nothing. You could use treats, other types of enrichment, sniffing, massage or you could also just sit in the ground with your dog and be with them.

Settle work is, and should be, relaxing for dog and owner. Relaxation also reduces the excitement and novelty of outdoor distractions and builds more bonding and communication between you and your dog.

If your dog struggles to relax outdoors, your dog is overexcited or even reactive, or isn’t able to listen to you or work with you then it’s likely you need to go back to teaching settle and relaxation techniques. Get in touch with a trainer if you are stuck and need help with this.

Congratulations to Loki on passing his 1-21 adolescent course with flying colours. Loki started the course as he was pulling on the lead and couldn’t be let off the lead due to running up to other dogs and not returning.

Through the course we have been working on these issues and his lead walking is brilliant now and his recall is even better!

He’s ignoring prey, recalling from dogs, far more focused on his owner than ever before, coming to heel off the lead by choice, checking in regularly and staying in close proximity to his owner.

It’s just excellent to see how far he’s came in just a few sessions. It’s clear how much training his mum has put in between the sessions too.

When doing 1-2-1 training it’s my job to guide yo, teach you how to train your dogs, offer support when needed, tailor your training to suit your dog and to ensure your dog is progressing. The rest is down to the owners to put the hard graft and work in!

It’s just amazing seeing owners committed and working so hard on their homework and enjoying seeing the benefits of it.

Well done and well deserved. I’ll see you soon at the group classes to continue his training journey! 🐶🤩

I’m so proud to share how fantastic Clyde is doing now around other dogs. Clyde started working with me as he was reactive to other dogs and bikes on walks.

His owners didn’t know what to do, Clyde was stressed on walks and so was his owners.

Having a reactive dog can take its toll mentally on both the dog and owners. It can out strain on their relationship and also take a lot of enjoyment away from walks and outdoor activities.

Clyde did three private sessions with me and what a difference now. He’s able to pass dogs on and off lead, he’s now seeking out dogs to greet and interact with and is just so much more relaxed on walks.

It was lovely today to see him on his long line choosing to interact or just walk past other dogs calmly.

Absolutely well done to Clyde and his mum for all the training they have put in between sessions too. 🥰🐶💕Gaynor Callan

Fergus the German shepherd had a session at home to help him with his calmness round the cocker spaniel Lola. Fergus enjoys playing by with Lola and follows her everywhere!

Lola doesn’t quite appreciate all the attention all of the time 🤣.

Therefore we had an indoor behavioural session to address what was going on with Fergus and Lola then put training in place for both of them. Lovely to see them again and they are both just the sweetest!

Gorgeous girl Holly Poochon has just started her 1-2-1 training with me. She had attended group training in the past with a different provider but needs more tailored training to get on the right track.

Often 1-2-1 training is much better for specific issues or to ensure you dog has the correct start in life and great foundations.
After they have these foundations and existing skills it can be advantageous to go to an experienced, well ran group class to maintain and improve those behaviours once we have some skills already in place.

She’s such a sweet little girl and so smart. She picked up the training well and was loving learning new things.

Happy training and I’ll see you again soon Holly !

Check out 11 week old Heidi on her first ever walkies! She even got to meet the first dog outside and had her first time off the lead. Shes doing my 1-2-1 puppy course and also joining my group puppy classes.

The kids came along too so they could be part of her training journey and were fantastic with her.

Heidi did so well today and was super brave on her first outdoor session play absolutely well done to the kids for being dog trainers for the day! 🥰💕🐶

Congratulations to Shelby and her parents for passing their 1-2-1 adolescent skills course.

They have all worked so hard through the course and Shelby has came on leaps and bounds.

It has been lovely to see her progressing session by session.

The last session she worked on calm greetings and also ignoring/passing dogs using Oreo as a demo dog and “distraction dog” and she was brilliant.

Well done Shelby and keep up the good work.

Oreo working alongside Jack the brown springer to help build his confidence of other dogs and his ability to stay calm and relaxed.

Jack has had some bad experiences with dogs when in close proximity and therefore hasn’t been able to walk safely with other dogs for months.

Oreo was able to help teach him that other dogs can be safe and enjoyable to walk alongside and interact with.

Well done to everyone at class today. Lovely night in the sunshine and all the dogs were fabulous! 🥳🐶💕

I had the pleasure of working with little Trio again last night!

He’s such a well trained little guy and his owners put in a lot of training, love and commitment with Trio.

This session was work on his barking around the home and teaching more relaxation ability for certain situations such as visitors and cafes etc.

He did brilliantly at his session and has lots of homework to work on but I’m sure he will do fabulous, as will his owners.

Keep up the good work Trio and lovely to see you all again.

Reo the Doberman puppy has just started his 1-2-1 puppy life skills course with me.

His first session was at his home alongside his big sister Lola. One of the family members has a neurological condition which can cause loss of balance and disorientation. Due to this it’s very important that Reo learns to stay calm in the home, listen to direction, work well via hand signals and also walk well on the lead to ensure the safety of everyone in the home. This training will be tailored to best suit the family and Reo.

Reo is doing fantastic already and is learning some great new skills. He was shattered after working so hard at his training session but loved every minute!

Happy training Reo and a I’ll see you on Friday for the group puppy classes. 🥰💕🐶

Congratulations to rescued boy, Blue, on passing his adolescence course.

He’s done so well through his course and had built lots of skills and abilities through the training.

He’s now a lot more comfortable outdoors on walks, can be left along in the house and has even started working on a nice recall too.

Well done Blue and keep up the good work 🥳💕

Lovely to see Lewis coming on leaps and bounds too with his focus on walks.

He is a rescue dog and can be quite easily stressed and overwhelmed on walks. Through his training we are building trust, focus and confidence with him.

He’s been such a good boy and it’s lovely seeing him improving each session 🥰

Skye the Patterdale has just finished her course and is just brilliant. She was a little reactive to dogs and also pulled heavily on the lead. She was quite anxious on her walks when we started but even after the first session she had improved dramatically.

It’s lovely to see her being able to walk alongside another dog on and off the lead now with ease. Her lead walking is spot on now too and she looks so much more relaxed on her walks.

Well done to Skye and her family for putting in the work and sticking to it. It’s paid off and it’s just lovely to see how calm and happy Skye is on walks now.

Well done to Loki who is doing fabulous on his recall and loose lead walking course.

This is his third session and he’s now off the lead and recalling under distractions. Plus his lead walking has been excellent too.

Oreo came along for a little bit as well to help Loki practising walking alongside another calm dog to add some distractions to his training. 🥰🐶

Oreo came to work with me today today to help little Charlie-Brown build some confidence with other dogs. As Oreo is very calm around other dogs he was the ideal dog to help Charlie overcome her fear of dogs.

It was brilliant seeing her initiating play and being so keen to greet Oreo. You could see her building confidence as she went.

Thanks Oreo for coming to help and absolutely well done to Charlie. 🥰🥳

Back to work today after another fantastic weekend away in the camper with the dogs. Going away on holidays with your dogs is a great way to work on their training, build a strong bond between you and your dog, provide extra fun enrichment and spend time relaxing with your pooches.

The dogs had a fantastic time at Galloway forest at the Otter pools and then Stranraer at the beach.

Gus the Labrador was back after his next photo check by Miriam at Clyde vets. Gus as some of you know has some severe hip and elbow issues.

He’s had to be on house rest for months and very short street walks only. This is causing issues with being able to socialise him around other dogs, walk him for long periods and also impacts his training too.

Due to this he is extremely excited when meeting other dogs and also pulls in the lead. Today I brought Oreo with me to kept Gus beginner Elaine how to relax in the presence of another dog. Play also how to appropriately greet them calmly as he’s unable to play with dogs just now due to joint issues.

Oreo is super chill and calm around other dogs therefore no matter how excited Gus becomes Oreo will stay calm. This was fantastic in helping Gus to relax and learn to greet a dog calmly plus stay within their presence.

We also added in some low impact and easy body awareness exercises which can provide some needed enrichment for Gus whilst he’s awaiting x rays and surgery.

Well done to Gus and to Oreo for both working their socks off today!

Pocket Bully puppy Willow just passed her 1-2-1 puppy life skills course with flying colours today.

I bought my Springer spaniel Oreo to work with me today. He loves it and it’s great for clients dogs to be able to walk alongside a calm dog.

Willow has a great time meeting him, practising her recall from other dogs, ability to calmly interact and walk alongside another dog too.

It was lovely to see how much she’s came along already.

Well done Willow and Lisa!
