B&W Willesley vet, Sally McCartney, was called out to a poor horse who had been found with a wound which the owner suspected may have been caused by putting his leg through a wooden fence. After sedating the horse and ultrasound scanning the area, Sally opened up the wound and removed a huge splinter with forceps ๐ฑ. The horse is now on painkillers and antibiotics and is doing well ๐

Some of you may remember Sapphire and Jewel who were treated at the B&W Equine Hospital in Spring 2021 after being rescued by Welsh Pony Rescue Rehoming Charitable Trust - Ponies for Rehoming. Both were in a very poor way and were very weak, needing assistance to stand and some intensive treatment and nursing care. With the dedication, expertise and care of the team at the hospital, together with Jewel (the coloured pony) spending some time rehabilitating at TEAM GREEN HORSES, both were eventually discharged back home to Wales, where they were reunited and rehomed together for their care & rehab to be continued with their lovely new owner.
This video shows a very small part of their journey, from when they were rescued through being treated at the hospital to arriving at their new home. You MUST watch until the end for the video of how Jewel & Sapphire are now!! We have to say, it really made us quite emotional watching this and weโre so delighted to see both ponies enjoying life so much after such a tough start.
Thanks to Tina of Welsh Pony Rescue for sending us the video of them now, and to Jewel and Sapphireโs owner, who had this to say about them:
โSapphire is a little rascal, she is the sweetest but loves to walk straight through the electric fence when Iโve just fixed it! Iโve never known such a greedy pony! Jewel is such a lady, you wouldnโt catch her doing anything like that. Both love a groom, they are fab for the farrier etc. Weโve been taking them out on walks but trying to avoid when they are in season as they are the only mares around us. Last time it was like flying a kite with Jewel on the end of the rope! They live out 24/7, they have the big field during the day, then come in to a smaller paddock in the evenings for dinner and hay. They get on really well with the boys (who donโt get involved in their antics as itโs far too energetic)โ
Such luck
Our stud team have been busy doing ovum pick-up (OPU) for ICSI, a form of IVF that is increasingly popular in horses. This video gives a brief overview of the process of OPU from start to finish! The technique is useful for mares or stallions with certain fertility issues or where sperm availability is limited. It is also advantageous for competition mares as the procedure can be timed to suit the mare's competition schedule and OPU can be done outside the breeding season.
If you would like further information, give the B&W Stud a call on 01666 880501 or go to our website.

This two year old filly in the video below was found in the field unable to eat one day with her head and neck stretched out. She was bright and alert and moving around as normal.
B&W Vet, Elise, examined her and found her to be clinically normal other than her head and neck position, flickering third eyelids, inability to open her jaw (despite sedation and use of a gag) and a mildly elevated heart rate. She had a small wound on her left hind coronet but it was old and healing with no apparent lameness. Tetanus was discussed with the owner, although unconfirmed, and she was treated with pain relief and antibiotics.
By the next morning she had a โrocking horseโ stance and started spasming when stimulated by someone entering her stable. At this point Elise was fairly convinced she had tetanus. It is unknown when she contracted the infection but it was assumed via the minor wound which did not seem in itself a problem. All available treatment was provided, sadly however, the filly died 24 hours later.
The filly was unvaccinated for tetanus. A routine course of tetanus vaccinations could have prevented this. The disease is treatable, however infection can be present for up to to 3 weeks before symptoms become apparent and in these cases the toxicity is often too advanced to save the horse.
We advise vaccines should be started in foals from 6 months of age. One vaccine is given and then a second 4 weeks later (in contrast to influenza which is 21- 92 days). The initial booster is advised at 12 months and then every 24 months thereafter.
Tetanus is a bacterial infection caused by Clostrium Tetani organisms, which live in the soil abundantly. Therefore it is the case that all horses are at risk of tetanus infection, the method of infection is via a wound or break in the skins defensive barrier. Signs of infection may not occur for a delay of 1 to 3 weeks following entry via a wound.
Signs to look out for are uncontrollable muscle spasm as the toxin attacks the ne
Rue was referred to the B&W Equine Hospital, by Duncan Ballard from our Failand Clinic, for a standing MRI scan of the front fetlocks. This was performed under standing sedation and the scan revealed extensive fluid accumulation (bone oedema) within the bone marrow of the condyles of the cannon bone (these are the rounded ends at the bottom of the cannon bone, which make up part of the fetlock joint). The origin of the bone oedema was not completely clear although an inflammatory response was suspected.
Following the MRI scan both conservative (medical) and surgical management options were discussed with the owner and it was elected to perform surgery. Rue underwent general anaesthesia and a CT scan was performed, immediately prior to surgery, to assist with surgical planning. A screw was then placed across the condyles of the cannon bone. The compressive nature of the screw placement is called a lag screw.
Following surgery Rue remained comfortable and is now being managed at home back, overseen by Duncan at Failand. We look forward to hearing further progress.
Thank you very much to Rue's owner for allowing us to share this video with you.

Maverick was presented to B&W Equine Hospital for evaluation of clinical signs including oral pain when he is eating hay specifically, 'quidding' and head tossing.
His signs had been investigated by the referring vet and they advised a CT scan that would enable 3D imaging of the head. Due to Maverickโs size and weight, he was able to undergo this on the table (designed for people) of our large CT scanner. The CT scan revealed no serious abnormalities but some minor dental abnormalities were revealed. These were confirmed on oroscopic examination, and he underwent treatment for these, after waking up from the brief general anaesthetic, when the anaesthetic tube was removed and therefore no longer in the way.
Miniature ponies can be especially challenging to investigate when standing, as this places strain on the ageing vet (Henry's words not ours!) ) who may struggle to bend low enough to treat them comfortably and because most veterinary equipment is produced for more typically-sized horses. However, they have the advantage of being able to lie on the CT bed constructed for large humans and once anesthetised they can be manipulated by a well-fed veterinary team more easily and safely than a larger horse.
Maverick made a good recovery after the anaesthetic, CT scan and treatment. He is a member of a highly skilled miniature driving team, and we will see how effective the treatments have been in the ensuing weeks.
Thanks to Maverick's owners for allowing us to share his story.

๐ชฑ๐ชฑ Do you know the dangers of encysted small redworm? ๐ชฑ๐ชฑ
During the colder months, small redworm ingested by your horse can โhibernateโ within cysts in your horseโs gut wall. These encysted small redworm donโt lay eggs, which is why a faecal worm egg count cannot identify their presence. When the weather warms up as we head towards the Spring, these encysted small redworm start to emerge as adults and this mass emergence may cause very severe damage to your horseโs gut resulting in diarrhoea, colic and sadly, death.
We recommend that treat your horse for encysted redworm at the end of the grazing season when the weather gets colder. This reduces your horseโs chances of picking up worm larvae from the pasture, and therefore causing ongoing pasture contamination.
Don't forget that our vets are always happy to discuss worming or recommend an appropriate wormer as part of your horse's targeted worming programme.
