Sophie Bell’s advice is always worth a read…

It is important to identify and understand heat stress, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke. Heatstroke is the final stage, these dogs are SEVERELY affected. Seizures, clotting problems, blood lost through vomit and diarrhoea. These dogs are in shock! Submerging icy water is potentially their only chance.

Those who are panting hard, walking like they are drunk, having vomiting and/or diarrhoea without blood, NOT having seizures will respond to cold water on hairless areas and a fan. We don’t need to be as aggressive with our cooling.

All dogs affected by the heat should have a vet check…

Adder vs Grass snakes: what is are the differences?🐍
It can be a worrying for pet owners when they cross paths with a snake, but it is important to know the difference between adders and grass snakes.
An adder has a dark, zigzag pattern down their back with either a ‘V’ or ‘X’ on their head. Adder bites are venomous, so if your pet is bitten by one, they should be brought to the practice as an emergency! It is rare that they will bite unless they feel threatened.
Grass snakes are grey/green coloured with black sections on their sides and a yellow and black ‘collar’ around their neck. They are very shy animals who are not venomous!
If you are worried about your pet and you are concerned about a snake bite, call your branch to be on the safe side.🐾

Soooo good to see little Betsy back today. She lost the sight in one eye about a month ago and had to have her eye removed. But today she was back with the gang and you wouldn’t know she’d been through surgery and what we humans would consider a life changing experience. Dogs are just amazing!! She’s adapted and is living life to the full. AND she can still catch a biscuit 🙌🏻🐾 The others were all pleased to see her and, surprise surprise, no judgement from them that she looked a little different. Humans - be more dog!

Phoebe 05.07.13 - 22.08.23

On Tuesday evening we had to say goodbye to our beloved Phoebe. She’d had some health challenges over the last couple of years, with irritable bowel disease, and had a worrying dip in July, but then seemed to be responding well to treatment. On Tuesday she suddenly took a turn for the worse and by the evening it became clear to us that the time had come to do what was the right thing for her, the final way we could show her how much we loved her. The team at Pennard Vets handled a very difficult situation for us with immense care and sensitivity, looking after us as much as Pheebs, (thank you Ewan, Grace, Lauren and our very own Flora).

The gaping hole she has left feels more like a yawning chasm right now. The empty bed, the little face not there looking for you around the house, not there to say hello in the morning (or more likely where’s my breakfast!). The tip tap of claws across the kitchen floor. If you were really lucky, silly ears and a crinkled nose when she was pleased to see you.

In time I suppose the happy memories will rise above the grief and we will always be grateful for the ten years we shared with her. She gave us so much, most importantly, perhaps, she gave us time together. Ten years of time away from other distractions, time to play and laugh with her, time to explore in the woods, time to run and splash in the sea (and fill your wellies with water?!). Time to walk and talk and share concerns that might have been difficult to share otherwise. Phoebe gave us so much. We hope we gave her a happy life. We will never forget her. 💔
