Rory came into rescue due to a relationship break down.

Rory was extremely anxious and worried when he first arrived, there was a lot of cowering with us, very worried about everything from putting a collar on, extremely anxious in the car where he would throw up, if a voice was as much raised he was gone hiding somewhere, very heart breaking to witness.

The dog that has been emerging in big steps every day has been one of the reasons we do rescues to watch this dog grow and bloom over such a short period to the dog we first met is why dogs are so special once they feel safe and loved .

I am now writing about a dog that if I could I would keep him in a heart beat - he has the most lovely nature typical Lab and adores cuddles and affection so much its like he tries to climb inside you.

He plays with other dogs particularly paired up a young female Lucy who he loves playing with and sleeping with.

From being terrified of the car he now cannot wait to get in. He was terrified of the crate he now sleeps in at night in the kitchen with the other dogs and now he chooses to sleep in their sometimes of his own accord during the day and at night if we are out I only have to wave the sausage and he cannot get in faster enough. He sleeps well at night and is house trained.

Out on walks he is joy to walk with if you love a dog who loves being out in the countryside he has so much energy he loves running, sniffing and will keep this up for the complete walk, he is fine meeting new dogs out but if they are too pushy or too over the top he will run away back to me he is still building on that confidence.

He is a beautiful gentle soul and will get a lot of interest because of him being a young Lab and beautiful but its really important we find the right home for him who can give him what he needs to feel safe and secure we will not take anything less as we do for all our dogs.

He needs another dog or dogs - one that will play with him and be his friend. He is living in adult family home with grown up children that is busy with lots of comings and goings which he copes with, he loves us all and loves meeting new people but he would not cope with young children and the chaos and noise that sort of home brings at times as if there is as much as a raised voice he has gone it terrifies him. He will go and hide.

He needs a home that meets his exercise needs, I have done lead walking with him as he was terrified of the lead and he has done really well walking around our village with the cars etc but still worried so he will not suit a town.

You will need to be a family or people who have had rescue dogs before and understand that a dog like Rory will take time but with his temperament he will with the right guidance get over this, he has missed out on socialization around towns, people, cafe's, dog training but with another dog by his side he will get this quickly once he trusts you. But you need to have the time to do this.

Rory is actually for a young dog very easy to live with once he has had his walk he is happy to chill out on the sofa or floor with the other dogs with no problems at all.

We have done quite a few videos of Rory we have put at the bottom of this write up so you can get a feel for this beautiful soul in different situations.

Rory is fully vaccinated, chipped, flea/wormed, he is not neutered yet as only 10 months so he will not be homed with entire dogs (we do check people's Vet records), he will be need to be done once he has finished growing and more confident and this will be part of the Adoption Contract.

All too often I see posts of stressed out family pets with kids hanging off them, lying on them etc and an endless row of comments saying how cute it is and how much that dog loves the child etc. Its not cute to ignore your amazingly patient dogs repeated attempts to tell you they are uncomfortable. People please stop putting your dogs and children in dangerous situations just for social media likes.

Have really missed walking this precious girl since her owner changed to working from home, so happy that next month she is coming to stay for a week while her owners go on holiday.

This is the side of rescuing that people don’t see, and just don’t realise how hard it is for us behind the scenes.
Strap in guys, while I explain.

This is Marcus.

His owner contacted me to ask me to rehome him, because….
‘He barks at other dogs and people when out so needs rehoming ’

Marcus is a 2 year old patterdale x Labrador.

He had been owned by said owner for… 5 weeks.

He’s just settling in, learning his new environment and family, and at only 2 years old he will be rather overwhelmed as well as adjusting to everything new.

Barking is how dogs communicate, and express their fears, and also excitement.

When I asked his owner what training she had been doing with Marcus to help him overcome his possible nervous behaviour, the answer was ‘he’s had none’

I explained I am full at the moment but I will let her know when I had room to fit him in.

2.5 hours later I receive a call from a vet practice.

Marcus had been taken to the vets to be EUTHANISED.

Put to sleep.
To end his life, because his owner could not be bothered to put any time or training into him.

THANKFULLY, the vets refused and called us.
They spoke to their behaviourist while they were there, and offered the owner sessions to help Marcus- the owner declined.

Killing him was the easy way to end her problem.

So, of course, with fear the owner would then just go to another vet and put him to sleep- I made room.
I don’t have room, but I’m not having it.

Marcus has been with us less than half an hour.
He has sat, taken a treat very gently.
Has met 6 dogs- enjoyed a sniff and his tail hasn’t stopped wagging

He hasn’t barked yet.

Too many people are getting pets without any consideration to the time they need to adjust, and expecting them to be ‘perfect companions’ without actually putting anything into them.

Take some responsibility and invest the time into them, you chose them to be part of your family. Stop destroying them just because you cannot be bothered to help them.
It’s not their fault.

You are safe Marcus, and loved.
You will never be treated so badly again, and that I can promise.

Well after being pretty much solidly booked up for the past 6 years the cost of living crisis is now starting to bite and I've had 2 clients have to cancel their dog walks, this leaves me 2 x lunch time slots available for anyone and some afternoon stables availability.
Please get in touch if you think I can help you.

There’s a new movie out called ‘Dog’ - it features a highly trained Malinois. It’s a sidekick type movie that makes dogs seem very cool and useful and gives people a warm fuzzy feeling. Fun to watch.

Advice: Don’t even start to entertain the idea of a Malinois pup unless you are extremely experienced, and prepared to dedicate hours a day to behaviour, training and exercise - long term - because they don’t come pre-trained!! They require SO MUCH INPUT to prevent issues, and not just as a pup. But forever. This could be 15 years or more.
Friends don’t let friends buy Mals!

I absolutely know that the rescues will be full of them in a year - most will be aggressive with over developed threat perception, many will be prepared to bite dogs or people, and most will be unpredictable due to a lack of basic fulfilment during the critical period. So if you want to give one a whirl, wait a year and rehabilitate a dumped one.
Please don’t be part of the problem - I can already see the ‘breeders’ with pound signs in their eyes. A badly bred Malinois is a dangerous thing, in the wrong hands doubly so. Just saying…
