Would you know what to do if your dog has a heart attack or a fit? Or what to do to stop the bleeding if he is bitten by another dog? What would happen if he choked on a stick or a toy? Would you know what to do? Could you help him? ....there's no ambulance to call. A DogSafeUK (South West) Canine First Aid course will give you the essential knowledge, practical skills, and confidence you need to

take action and help your best friend when he needs it most. Our one day course is an endorsed qualification offered at level 2 in line with the specification set by OFQUAL. As far as we know, this is the only course that results in an endorsed qualification and not just another 'certificate of attendance' or 'CPD'. The course is a balanced mixture of theory and practical hands-on sections and we have a large, comfortable training room to accommodate this.

It's that time of year 🐍!
Here's the lowdown on Adder bites from the Veterinary Poisons Information Service and Animal PoisonLine. Save the Animal Poisonline number in your phone so you don't have to waste time on Google if your pooch gets poisoned. 01202 50 9000. 🐕

🐍 Adders 🐍

As the weather begins to warm, we have noticed an increase in calls regarding adder bites.

The adder (Vipera berus berus) is the only venomous snake native to the UK, and is also found across northern Europe. It is a protected species in the UK. Adders are most commonly, but not exclusively, found on dry, sandy heaths, sand dunes, rocky hillsides, moorlands and woodland edges. The clinical signs of an adder bite can include rapid and progressive swelling around the bite site, pain, lethargy, vomiting, bruising, bleeding and collapse.

What should you do if your pet has been bitten by an adder?
❌Do not panic.
❌Do not interfere with the bite.
❌Do not apply a tourniquet.
❌Do not attempt to touch or catch the snake.
❌Do not kill the snake – it is a protected species.
❌If practical, carry your dog to your car and go to your veterinary surgeon - do not delay seeking advice even if your pet is well as things can change quickly.

Adders are not aggressive and generally only bite when provoked. They hibernate in the winter and as a result most bites occur in the summer. Pets are frequently bitten on the leg, head or neck. If your pet has been bitten by an adder (even if you did not see the snake or are not sure what happened) – contact your vet immediately. Your vet will examine your pet to determine the location of the bite and extent of the swelling.

Veterinary professionals can call us any time on 02073 055 055 if required for assistance with managing cases of adder bites. We also hold a list of antivenom stockists across the UK. Please note that antivenom is not indicated in all cases.

Say hello to Gary! Isn't he adorable? 🥰
His hooman companion would like to find someone to keep Gary company while she attend's our canine first aid course on Saturday the 16th of September, so if you are a professional doggy companion, walker, or carer near Exminster/Exeter with availability on that day please can you message us so we can put you in touch?
Gary is 5 years old and a typical fox terrier. Curious and willful, likes cuddles and attention. Barks for joy! Well socialized (has been to daycare regularly since a puppy) and good with other dogs generally once the pecking order is established. Good recall.

There is a lot of misleading information on the internet at this time of year relating to daffodil toxicity in pets, and we understand that this can cause a lot of worry and anxiety to pet owners.

Daffodils contain irritant compounds that often cause gastrointestinal signs such as vomiting and diarrhoea. It is important to note, however, that severe cases are uncommon and many animals can be managed at home.

📞If you are concerned that your pet has ingested a daffodil, we recommend contacting Animal PoisonLine for advice on 01202 509 000📞
