Hedgehog Awareness Week Day 6
1. Our beloved hedgehog is the same species that is found on most of continental Europe.
2. Adult hedgehogs have 36 teeth altogether, and the full set is complete before a hedgehog has turned 1.
3. The first set of spines a hedgehog has are pure white in colour.
Day 4 post for hedgehog awareness week!
1. A hedgehogs main diet is insects, and they will enjoy eating your garden “pests” such as slugs, worms, snails and beetles.
2. Hoglets leave their nest at around 8 weeks of age, to fend for themselves.
3. Hedgehog spines increase in number until the hedgehog is an adult. It will then have somewhere between 5000-7000 spines, which grow to around 2-3 centimetres in length.
Hedgehog Awareness Week Day 3
1. A hedgehog pregnancy lasts for 35 days, or 5 weeks.
2. Some hedgehogs do have fleas. However, hedgehog fleas are host specific so will not normally live on any other animals such as cats and dogs, nor live in your house.
3. Hedgehogs travel around 1-2 miles in a night, on the search for food and a mate.
Reptile surgery 🦎
Harold the green iguana is prepped and ready for a toe removal surgery in this photo. You can see that he has a blue bandage wrapped around his head, covering both eyes- the reason that we do this is because gentle pressure stimulates the vagal nerve and causes reptiles to relax, whilst the patient breathes in the general anaesthetic gas 🧘🏼♂️
The gadget that you can see on the side is a Doppler. This piece of kit allows us to hear the flow of blood so we can continually monitor the heart rate throughout the procedure.
The noise you can hear in the background is a ventilator. We use a ventilator for reptiles because they are prone to periods of apnoea (episodes of not breathing). We overcome this by ventilating patients mechanically, so we can set the rate that we will provide oxygen and gaseous anaesthetic.
We are very pleased with Harold’s procedure- well done to vet Lourdes and nurse Hannah T! Harold did well under his anaesthetic too!

Introducing Lambo! This handsome boy has found his fur-ever home with one of our receptionist. He came to us with a broken humeral condyle which couldn’t be repaired so his leg was removed under general anaesthetic by vet Matt and monitored by nurse Ellen. As you can see, he is doing so well on three legs!
Hopefully he puts a smile on your face as much as he has ours 🥰
We received a lovely review from Sophia’s owner that we wanted to share with you!
‘Vet (Lianne) had excellent knowledge about chickens. Overall service was outstanding. The vet was very understanding and did a superb job of explaining our pets illness and recommended a treatment plan’.
If you have any chicken concerns, we are happy to see your feathered friends 🐔

Rabbit 🐰 Summer Tips
Cooling Tips;
-Move them into a cool shady area
-Do not leave then in direct sunlight with no shade available
-Provide fresh greens to help keep them hydrated. Rinse the greens with water to increase their water intake. If the greens become wintered remove them from the environment.
-Ensure they have plenty of clean, fresh water
-Freeze water bottles or ice packs, wrap them in a towel and place in the enclosure. However, make sure your rabbits can move away from them if they wish too
-Use a wet towel to damped their ears and fur
-DO NOT pour water directly onto them as this causes shock
-Provide a fan
-Be extra sensitive to old, young, ill or overweight rabbits in the hot weather.
Signs of heat stroke;
-Taking short quick breaths
-Activity very slow and lethargic
-Drooling
-Reddening of the ears
-Falling unconscious
-Convulsing
Flystike Risk;
- Remember to always check your rabbit and guinea pig bottoms at least twice a day for soiling and signs of Flystrike. If your see any signs of maggots, it should be treated as an emergency. The maggots grow and eat away the surface area of the skin, leading to severe shock,collapse and death.
Ulrich and Magnus
🌟 Pet of the Day🌟
Here are rats Ulrich and Magnus enjoying some strawberry's!
Ulrich had a mammary mass removed under anaesthetic. His surgery was performed by vet Lianne and monitored by nurse Gemma B.
🦔Hedgehog Awareness Week – Day 2
The British Hedgehog is the same species that appears all across Europe.
Hedgehogs have around 5000-7000 spines, which are made of keratin – the same thing that human hair and nails are made from. They do not have spines on their belly, legs, chest, face or throat, which instead have a coarse fur on them.
Hedgehogs have poor eyesight and instead rely on their keen senses of smell and hearing to guide them at night.
Hedgehogs have quite long back legs. Although these are usually hidden by their “skirt” they can be seen when a hedgehog runs. A hedgehog can run at around the same speed that a human can walk at. Hedgehogs can also climb, dig and swim.
A group of hedgehogs is called an array. Seeing more than one hedgehog at a time is not very common as they are mainly solitary animals, apart from during the mating season.

🌟 Pet of the Day 🌟 Wallace the Degu has been in with us today for a dental procedure. His procedure was done by Lianne and his anaesthetic was monitored by nurse Amy. Here he is snuggling up to his friend post-surgery.
Phoebe the budgie was presented to our exotic vet Felix with crusting on her feet.
Today he obtained a deep skin scrap from
the feet and examined the sample using the microscope . Felix found that she has skin mites. These mites are Called Knemidokoptes.
We have administered treatment which will also be repeated in 10 days time.
We are hopeful that she will make a full recovery and be mite free.
