🦷 Taking care of your dog's teeth 🐕

Did you know oral disease is the largest health problem in dogs? 😮

While dental problems can be extremely painful, dogs usually don't show outward signs of pain so it can be tricky to spot. Prevention is key and taking a few small steps can help to improve your dogs dental health, including:
🦷 Brushing their teeth with dog-friendly toothpaste with a small soft brush
🦷 Providing the right diet - the texture of kibble helps to remove plaque and prevents food and bacteria gathering around the gun line
🦷 Regular check ups with your vet

Plaque is a sticky layer that develops from saliva, food and bacteria which can develop into a build up of brown tartar. Daily toothbrushing with dog-friendly toothpaste is the best way to prevent and remove plaque and tartar.

🫶🗣👂1 in 4 of us will experience a mental health problem in any given year. Too many of us are made to feel isolated, worthless and ashamed because of this.

Time to Talk Day is held at the beginning of February every year by Rethink Mental Illness and Mind, delivered in partnership with Co-op.

It is about helping people and communities to come together to have the nation’s biggest mental health conversation.

New data released on Time to Talk Day 2024 revealed the nation is putting on a ‘brave face’ to avoid talking about mental health during difficult times.

The tactic of bottling up was highest amongst younger people with 69% of 16–24-year-olds and 72% of 25-34 year-olds reporting they avoid saying how they really feel.

Although sometimes it may feel easier to tell people we’re ‘fine’, bottling things up and putting a brave face on can have a negative impact on our wellbeing. We wanted to use the day to remind people how talking about mental health has the power to reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness.

🐈 Looking after your cats teeth 🦷

Dental disease is very common in cats, however there are a few small steps that can help to improve your cats dental health. Including:

🦷 Brushing their teeth with cat friendly toothpaste with a small soft brush
🦷 Providing the right diet - there are specific foods to help with dental care
🦷 Regular check ups with your vet - this is so they can identify any early signs of dental disease

Other things you can do to care for your cats teeth are:
🦷 Avoid sugary or starchy treats - these kind of treats encourage bacterial growth in plaque, which releases acid that can cause teeth to decay
🦷 Include dry food as part of their regular feeding routine - this can decrease the development of dental disease in adulthood.

🚗🐾 National Pet Travel Safety Day 🐾🚗

Pet Travel Safety Day a day dedicated to raising awareness that every time you go in your vehicle you need to make sure your pet is restrained by using crash tested equipment, and in an appropriate position in the car.

🐱Cat carrier in car
If you are using a crash tested carrier that is suitable to be used with a seatbelt this is fine to go on the backseat. Do check before putting on the back seat.
If you do not have a crash tested carrier, position your basket on the floor behind the driver or passenger seat. A study undertaken by More Than car insurance shows you are 10 times more likely to crash at 30mph than any other speed. Which means your seats will not crush the carrier.
If you are not using a crash tested carrier, the wire mesh with the lid opening type are the most sturdy.

🐶Dogs

A crash tested harness on the back seat
A crash tested crate in your boot that must be anchored down correctly

A large dog needs plenty of space to lay down, if your dog does not have the space to do this a harness on the back seat would not be suitable.
A crash tested crate, anchored down

If your dog is too big for a crate you will need a crash tested dog guard
I would recommend you use this with a crash tested Tailgate.
If possible, restrain your dog within this space. Currently there are no crash tested pieces of equipment for this. Do take extra care with how you do this and never attach anything to a collar, only a harness.

When choosing the right piece of equipment for your dog, the crash tested option will always be better than anything not crash tested.

🩺🐾 As the festivities wind down, it's important to remember that the aftermath of holiday celebrations can sometimes leave hidden dangers for dogs. Leftover food and decorations can pose a risk to their health.

We wanted to provide you with a few tips to help you safely clean up any potential pet hazards:

1. Dogs can be curious about discarded gift wrap and ribbons. We'd recommend putting in a designated safe space while you clean up.

2. Remove any leftover decorations, especially tinsel, ribbons, and ornaments that might tempt your dog. If swallowed, these items can lead to choking or intestinal blockages.

3. Safely dispose of toxic trees and make sure they are not accessible to your dog. Ingesting these can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, and other digestive issues.

4. Store human food and alcohol out of 's reach to avoid any unwanted indulgences. Chocolate, nuts, and alcoholic drinks can all be toxic to dogs.

5. Secure food scraps in closed, pet-proof bins to avoid accidental ingestion.

We want to make sure your pets stay safe, healthy, and happy. If you have concerns about anything they may have ingested or need assistance with a post-holiday health check, you can book an appointment online or call us on 01455 610 227.

Happy New Year!
