🚗🐾 National Pet Travel Safety Day 🐾🚗

Pet Travel Safety Day a day dedicated to raising awareness that every time you go in your vehicle you need to make sure your pet is restrained by using crash tested equipment, and in an appropriate position in the car.

🐱Cat carrier in car
If you are using a crash tested carrier that is suitable to be used with a seatbelt this is fine to go on the backseat. Do check before putting on the back seat.
If you do not have a crash tested carrier, position your basket on the floor behind the driver or passenger seat. A study undertaken by More Than car insurance shows you are 10 times more likely to crash at 30mph than any other speed. Which means your seats will not crush the carrier.
If you are not using a crash tested carrier, the wire mesh with the lid opening type are the most sturdy.

🐶Dogs

A crash tested harness on the back seat
A crash tested crate in your boot that must be anchored down correctly

A large dog needs plenty of space to lay down, if your dog does not have the space to do this a harness on the back seat would not be suitable.
A crash tested crate, anchored down

If your dog is too big for a crate you will need a crash tested dog guard
I would recommend you use this with a crash tested Tailgate.
If possible, restrain your dog within this space. Currently there are no crash tested pieces of equipment for this. Do take extra care with how you do this and never attach anything to a collar, only a harness.

When choosing the right piece of equipment for your dog, the crash tested option will always be better than anything not crash tested.

🩺🐾 As the festivities wind down, it's important to remember that the aftermath of holiday celebrations can sometimes leave hidden dangers for dogs. Leftover food and decorations can pose a risk to their health.

We wanted to provide you with a few tips to help you safely clean up any potential pet hazards:

1. Dogs can be curious about discarded gift wrap and ribbons. We'd recommend putting in a designated safe space while you clean up.

2. Remove any leftover decorations, especially tinsel, ribbons, and ornaments that might tempt your dog. If swallowed, these items can lead to choking or intestinal blockages.

3. Safely dispose of toxic trees and make sure they are not accessible to your dog. Ingesting these can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, and other digestive issues.

4. Store human food and alcohol out of 's reach to avoid any unwanted indulgences. Chocolate, nuts, and alcoholic drinks can all be toxic to dogs.

5. Secure food scraps in closed, pet-proof bins to avoid accidental ingestion.

We want to make sure your pets stay safe, healthy, and happy. If you have concerns about anything they may have ingested or need assistance with a post-holiday health check, you can book an appointment online or call us on 01455 610 227.

Happy New Year!

🎇🎇 Fireworks can cause stress, anxiety and even aggression in some pets, so preparing early for firework season is essential. Read on for some tips and tricks to help keep your pet calm during New Years Eve:

🎇 Invest in a pheromone diffuser
Adaptil Calm Diffuser is clinically proven to help reduce the signs of fear by 93%. For the best results, plug the diffuser in at least 1 month before. You can get these from your veterinary practice or online retailers
🎇 Walk your dogs BEFORE nightfall
Gradually alter your walking routine about a week before to get your dog used to the change. Be sure to keep them on a lead at all times during firework season.
🎇 Keep cats in
If your cat is an outdoor cat that likes to have adventures, it is worth trying to keep them indoors when they come home earlier in the day.
🎇 Create a safe space - and plenty of them
Fill a room or corner of a room with their water bowl, favourite toys and bedding to create a pet-friendly haven. DO NOT confine them to this area as this can cause more stress. Let them go where they feel safest.
🎇 Close windows, curtains and blinds
This may muffle the loud noises and prevent your pet from escaping if they decide to flee. Closing curtains and blinds will further sound proof the home and shut out bright flashes. Don't forget to lock the cat flap.
🎇 Turn up the volume on the TV or radio
This also helps to muffle loud bangs and crackles, but also provides a familiar noise to help distract your pet.
🎇 Give rabbits extra bedding
Rabbits tend to burrow when scared, so adding more bedding into their home gives them plenty to hide in. Add some more hideaways too.
🎇 Stay at home - if possible
Try to ensure someone is at home with your pets, this will help them with their fears.
🎇 Make sure they are microchipped
Spooked pets run away, especially cats, so make sure they are properly microchipped.
